Strains of the recently proposed species Bacteroides chinchillae share more than 99.4 % 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity with the type strain of Bacteroides sartorii although these two species do not appear to be similar from their published descriptions. The aim of this study was to perform phenotypic and genetic analyses of both species to clarify their taxonomic position. B. chinchillae JCM 16497T exhibited high hsp60 gene sequence similarity with B. sartorii JCM 17136T (100 %) as well as B. chinchillae JCM 16498 (100 %). The hsp60 gene sequence analysis and levels of DNA–DNA relatedness observed demonstrated B. sartorii JCM 17136T, B. chinchillae JCM 16497T, and B. chinchillae JCM 16498 are members of a single species. Based on these data, we propose Bacteroides chinchillae as a later heterotypic synonym of Bacteroides sartorii . An emended description of B. sartorii is provided.

Two motile, rod-shaped and agarolytic bacterial strains, designated PSC101T and KDW4T, were isolated from seawater and gut microflora of abalone, respectively, collected from the South Sea (Republic of Korea). Cells were Gram-stain-negative, aerobic, catalase- and oxidase-positive. Strains PSC101T and KDW4T showed high 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity to each other (98.6 %). Psychrosphaera saromensis SA4-48T was the nearest neighbour of strains PSC101T and KDW4T with 96.6 % and 97.0 % 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity, respectively. DNA–DNA relatedness among strains PSC101T, KDW4T and Psychrosphaera saromensis KCTC 23240T was less than 70 %. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences indicated that the two isolates belonged to the genus Psychrosphaera and formed a distinct phyletic line from Psychrosphaera saromensis SA4-48T. The common major cellular fatty acids of the two novel isolates were C16 : 0, C17 : 1ω8c and summed feature 3 (C16 : 1ω6c/C16 : 1ω7c). Flexirubin-type pigments were absent. The main ubiquinone was UQ-8 and the DNA G+C content of strains PSC101T and KDW4T was 49.5 and 42.5 mol%, respectively. The major polar lipids were phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylglycerol and an unidentified amino lipid. On the basis of the polyphasic characterization of the two strains, it is suggested that the two isolates represent two novel species of the genus Psychrosphaera , for which the names Psychrosphaera aestuarii sp. nov. (type strain, PSC101T = KCTC 32274T = JCM 19496T) and Psychrosphaera haliotis sp. nov. (type strain, KDW4T = KCTC 22500T = JCM 16340T) are proposed. An emended description of the genus Psychrosphaera is also proposed.

A bacterial strain, designated 157T, isolated from human faeces was characterized by using a polyphasic taxonomic approach, which included analysis of physiological and biochemical features, cellular fatty acid profiles, menaquinone profiles and its phylogenetic position, based on 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis. The strain was obligately anaerobic, non-pigmented, non-spore-forming, non-motile, Gram-stain-negative rods. The isolate was able to grown on medium containing 20 % (w/v) bile. 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis showed that the strain was a member of the genus Parabacteroides . Strain 157T was closely related to Parabacteroides gordonii JCM 15724T (96 % sequence similarity). The results of hsp60 gene sequence analysis indicated that strain 157T was different from P. gordonii JCM 15724T, with a hsp60 gene sequence similarity of 96.1 %. The major cellular fatty acids of strain 157T were anteiso-C15 : 0, iso-C17 : 0 3-OH, C18 : 1ω9c and anteiso-C17 : 0 3-OH. The major menaquinone of the isolate was MK-9. The DNA G+C content of strain 157T was 41.8 mol%. On the basis of these data, strain 157T represents a novel species of the genus Parabacteroides , for which the name Parabacteroides faecis sp. nov. is proposed; the type strain is 157T ( = JCM 18682T = CCUG 66681T).

A beige-coloured, Gram-stain-negative, aerobic, non-motile moderately thermotolerant, rod-shaped organism, strain CC-SPIO-10-1T, was isolated from a coastal hot spring of Green Island (Lutao), located off Taituang, Taiwan, on Marine Agar 2216. Based on 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis, this organism was grouped into the genus Stappia , showing 98.3 % sequence similarity to Stappia indica B106T and 98.2 % gene sequence similarity to Stappia stellulata IAM 12621T . Ubiquinone Q-10 was the major respiratory quinone and C18 : 1ω7c and C18 : 1ω7c 11-methyl were detected as the major fatty acids. The hydroxylated fatty acid C18 : 0 3-OH was detected as well. Predominant polar lipids were diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylcholine, phosphatidylglycerol, unidentified aminolipid AL1 and unidentified phospholipid PL1. Minor amounts of several unidentified lipids (PL2 and L1–L7) were present as well. The polyamine pattern contained the major compounds spermidine and spermine. Strain CC-SPIO-10-1T could be differentiated from the type strains of S. stellulata and S. indica by a set of biochemical tests. On the basis of the 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis and the chemotaxonomic and physiological data, it is concluded that strain CC-SPIO-10T represents a novel species of the genus Stappia for which the name Stappia taiwanensis sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is CC-SPIO-10 T ( = CCUG 59208T = LMG 25538 T = CCM 7757T).

A Gram-negative, non-motile bacterial strain that formed straight rods and straw yellow colonies, designated FCS-5T, was isolated from a marine sediment from the Arabian Sea. The isolate exhibited most of the phenotypic properties expected for a member of the genus Flavobacterium . The major fatty acids were iso-C15 : 0, iso-C17 : 0 3-OH, C17 : 1ω9c and summed feature 3 (comprising iso-C15 : 0 2-OH and/or C16 : 1ω7c). The only isoprenoid quinone was MK-6. The only polyamine was homospermidine and the major polar lipid was phosphatidylethanolamine. The G+C content of the genomic DNA was 32.4 mol%. According to 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis, strain FCS-5T belonged to the genus Flavobacterium and exhibited 99.3 % 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity with Flavobacterium beibuense F44-8T and 90.9–94.6 % sequence similarity with other members of the genus Flavobacterium . The results of physiological and biochemical tests allowed the discrimination of the isolate from its phylogenetic relatives. Strain FCS-5T is a representative of a novel species of the genus Flavobacterium , for which the name Flavobacterium rakeshii sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is FCS-5T ( = MTCC 10967T = JCM 17928T). An emended description of F. beibuense is also proposed.

Two bacterial strains, FWR-8T and CFWR-9T, were isolated from the gut of larvae of Protaetia brevitarsis seulensis that were raised at the National Institute of Agricultural Sciences, Wanju-gun, Republic of Korea. Both strains were strictly aerobic, Gram-stain-positive and non-motile. Strain FWR-8T possessed the highest sequence similarity (98.7 %) to that of Protaetiibacter intestinalis 2DFWR-13T and the phylogenetic tree revealed that strain FWR-8T formed a cluster with Ptb. intestinalis 2DFWR-13T. Pseudolysinimonas kribbensis MSL-13T and Lysinimonas yzui N7XX-4T shared a high 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity (97.8 %) and formed a cluster adjacent to the cluster that included Ptb. intestinalis 2DFWR-13T. The 16S rRNA gene sequence of strain CFWR-9T exhibited the highest similarity (97.7 %) to that of Agromyces binzhouensis OAct353T and the phylogenetic tree indicated that strain CFWR-9T formed one independent cluster with A. binzhouensis OAct353T that was within the radius of the genus Agromyces . The peptidoglycan type, major fatty acids, major menaquinones and total polar lipids of strain FWR-8T were characterized as type B1, iso-C16 : 0, anteiso-C15 : 0 and anteiso-C17 : 0, MK-15, MK-16 and MK-14, and diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol, two unidentified glycolipids and one unidentified lipid, respectively. Those from strain CFWR-9T were type B1, iso-C16 : 0, anteiso-C15 : 0 and anteiso-C17 : 0, MK-11, MK-12 and MK-10, and diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol, two unidentified glycolipids and one unidentified lipid, respectively. Based on the phenotypic and genotypic data, strains FWR-8T and CFWR-9T each represent a novel species within the genera Protaetiibacter and Agromyces , respectively. For these species, the names Protaetiibacter larvae sp. nov. and Agromyces intestinalis sp. nov. have been proposed, with the type strains FWR-8T (=KACC 19322T=NBRC 113051T) and CFWR-9T (=KACC 19306T=NBRC 113046T), respectively. Our results also justify a reclassification of Lysinimonas yzui as Pseudolysinimonas yzui comb. nov. and an emended description of the genus Pseudolysinimonas isprovided.

A DNA–DNA hybridization experiment was carried out to clarify the relationship between Porphyromonas crevioricanis and Porphyromonas cansulci . The taxonomic standing of these two species was unclear so far because of the high 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity value (99.9 %). The DNA–DNA relatedness values between P. crevioricanis JCM 15906T and P. cansulci JCM 13913T were above 91 % (91–99 %). In addition, P. crevioricanis JCM 15906T exhibited high hsp60 gene sequence similarity with P. cansulci JCM 13913T (100 %). The hsp60 gene sequence analysis and the DNA–DNA relatedness values demonstrated that P. crevioricanis JCM 15906T and P. cansulci JCM 13913T are a single species. Based on these data, we propose Porphyromonas cansulci as a later heterotypic synonym of Porphyromonas crevioricanis .

Strains LMG 27428T and LMG 27427 were isolated from the caecal content of a chicken and produced butyric, lactic and formic acids as major metabolic end products. The genomic DNA G+C contents of strains LMG 27428T and LMG 27427 were 40.4 and 38.8 mol%. On the basis of 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity, both strains were most closely related to the generically misclassified Streptococcus pleomorphus ATCC 29734T. Strain LMG 27428T could be distinguished from S. pleomorphus ATCC 29734T based on production of more lactic acid and less formic acid in M2GSC medium, a higher DNA G+C content and the absence of activities of acid phosphatase and leucine, arginine, leucyl glycine, pyroglutamic acid, glycine and histidine arylamidases, while strain LMG 27428 was biochemically indistinguishable from S. pleomorphus ATCC 29734T. The novel genus Faecalicoccus gen. nov. within the family Erysipelotrichaceae is proposed to accommodate strains LMG 27428T and LMG 27427. Strain LMG 27428T ( = DSM 26963T) is the type strain of Faecalicoccus acidiformans sp. nov., and strain LMG 27427 ( = DSM 26962) is a strain of Faecalicoccus pleomorphus comb. nov. (type strain LMG 17756T = ATCC 29734T = DSM 20574T). Furthermore, the nearest phylogenetic neighbours of the genus Faecalicoccus are the generically misclassified Eubacterium cylindroides DSM 3983T (94.4 % 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity to strain LMG 27428T) and Eubacterium biforme DSM 3989T (92.7 % 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity to strain LMG 27428T). We present genotypic and phenotypic data that allow the differentiation of each of these taxa and propose to reclassify these generically misnamed species of the genus Eubacterium formally as Faecalitalea cylindroides gen. nov., comb. nov. and Holdemanella biformis gen. nov., comb. nov., respectively. The type strain of Faecalitalea cylindroides is DSM 3983T = ATCC 27803T = JCM 10261T and that of Holdemanella biformis is DSM 3989T = ATCC 27806T = CCUG 28091T.

A Gram-positive, aerobic, non-motile, non-endospore-forming rod-shaped bacterium with ibuprofen-degrading capacity, designated strain I11T, was isolated from activated sludge from a wastewater treatment plant. The major respiratory quinone was demethylmenaquinone DMK-7, C18 : 1 cis9 was the predominant fatty acid, phosphatidylglycerol was the predominant polar lipid, the cell wall contained meso-diaminopimelic acid as the diagnostic diamino acid and the G+C content of the genomic DNA was 74.1 mol%. On the basis of 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis, the closest phylogenetic neighbours of strain I11T were Patulibacter ginsengiterrae CECT 7603T (96.8 % similarity), Patulibacter minatonensis DSM 18081T (96.6 %) and Patulibacter americanus DSM 16676T (96.6 %). Phenotypic characterization supports the inclusion of strain I11T within the genus Patulibacter (phylum Actinobacteria) . However, distinctive features and 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis suggest that is represents a novel species, for which the name Patulibacter medicamentivorans sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is I11T ( = DSM 25962T = CECT 8141T).

A novel actinomycete, designated strain NEAU-TCZ24T, was isolated from soil and characterized using a polyphasic approach. The results of phylogenetic analysis based on the 16S rRNA gene sequence indicated that the organism should be assigned to the genus Cellulomonas and formed a stable clade with its closest relatives Cellulomonas terrae JCM 14899T (98.4 % 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity), Cellulomonas xylanilytica JCM 14281T (97.9 %) and Cellulomonas humilata JCM 11945T (97.7 %). The major menaquinones were identified as MK-9(H4) and MK-8(H4). The phospholipid profile was found to contain diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylinositolmannoside, a ninhydrin-positiveglycolipid, an unidentified phosphoglycolipid, an unidentified phospholipid and an unidentified lipid. The major fatty acids were identified as anteiso-C15 : 0, C18 : 1ω9c, C16 : 0 and anteiso-C17 : 0. Moreover, morphological and chemotaxonomic properties of NEAU-TCZ24T also confirmed the affiliation of the isolate to the genus Cellulomonas . However, multilocus sequence analysis based on five other house-keeping genes (gyrB, rpoB, recA, relA and atpD), DNA–DNA relatedness, physiological and biochemical data indicated that NEAU-TCZ24T could be distinguished from its closest relatives. Therefore, it is proposed that NEAU-TCZ24T represents a novel species of the genus Cellulomonas , for which the name Cellulomonas rhizosphaerae sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is NEAU-TCZ24T (=CCTCC AA 2018042T=JCM 32383T).

Two novel actinobacterial strains, designated C9-5T and C3-43, were isolated from soil samples of a cave in Jeju Island, Republic of Korea, and subjected to taxonomic study by a polyphasic approach. The organisms exhibited a typical rod–coccus developmental cycle during growth and grew at 10–30 °C, pH 5–9 and 0–3 % (w/v) NaCl. In 92 single-copy core gene sequence analysis, strain C9-5T was loosely associated with Rhodococcus tukisamuensis , albeit sharing low 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity (97.4 %). A combination of morphological and chemotaxonomic characteristics supported assignment with the genus Rhodococcus . With respect to 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity, the novel isolates showed the highest identity to the type strain of Rhodococcus subtropicus (98.7 % sequence similarity), followed by Rhodococcus olei (98.5 %) and Rhodococcus pedocola (98.4 %).The average nucleotide identity and digital DNA–DNA hybridization values between strain C9-5T and members of the genus Rhodococcus were ≤81.5 and ≤37.1 %, respectively. A set of physiological and chemotaxonomic properties together with overall genomic relatedness differentiated the novel isolates from members of the genus Rhodococcus , for which the name Rhodococcus spelaei sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is C9-5T (=KACC 19822T=DSM 107558T). Based on genome analysis performed here, it is also proposed that Rhodococcus biphenylivorans Su et al. 2015 is a later heterotypic synonym of Rhodococcus pyridinivorans Yoon et al. 2000, Rhodococcus qingshengii Xu et al. 2007 and Rhodococcus baikonurensis Li et al. 2004 are later heterotypic synonyms of Rhodococcus erythropolis (Gray and Thornton 1928) Goodfellow and Alderson 1979 (Approved Lists 1980), and Rhodococcus percolatus Briglia et al. 1996 and Rhodococcus imtechensis Ghosh et al. 2006 are later heterotypic synonyms of Rhodococcus opacus Klatte et al. 1995.
