A taxonomic study was carried out on a novel bacterium, designated strain 3-C-1T, which was isolated from a crude-oil-degrading consortium produced by enrichment of a sample of surface seawater collected near Xiamen Island in China. Cells of the novel strain were Gram-reaction-negative, oxidase- and catalase-positive, rod-shaped, motile and amphitrichous. Growth was observed with 0–12 % (w/v) NaCl and at temperatures of 10–42 °C. The novel strain was incapable of nitrate reduction. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences indicated that strain 3-C-1T belonged to the genus Gallaecimonas and was most closely related to Gallaecimonas pentaromativorans CEE_131T (with sequence similarities of 96.5–96.8 %). The gyrB gene sequence of strain 3-C-1T was also similar to that of G. pentaromativorans CEE_131T (89.4 % sequence similarity). The results of PCR-based comparison of repetitive extragenic palindromic elements (Rep-PCR fingerprinting) allowed strain 3-C-1T to be distinguished from G. pentaromativorans CEE_131T. The principal fatty acids of the novel strain were C16 : 0, C12 : 0 3-OH, summed feature 3 (C16 : 1ω6c and/or C16 : 1ω7c) and summed feature 8 (C18 : 1ω6c and/or C18 : 1ω7c). The G+C content of the novel strain’s genomic DNA was 61.3 mol%. The combined genotypic and phenotypic data indicate that strain 3-C-1T represents a novel species of the genus Gallaecimonas , for which the name Gallaecimonas xiamenensis sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is 3-C-1T ( = CCTCC AB 209060T  = LMG 25226T  = MCCC 1A01354T).

A novel bacterium, designated strain JchiT, was isolated from soil in Taiwan and characterized using a polyphasic approach. Cells of strain JchiT were aerobic, Gram-stain-negative, motile and rod-shaped. They contained poly-β-hydroxybutyrate granules and formed dark-yellow colonies. Growth occurred at 20–37 °C (optimum between 25 and 30 °C), at pH 6.0–8.0 (optimum between pH 7.0 and pH 8.0) and with 0–2 % NaCl (optimum between 0 and 1 %). Phylogenetic analyses based on 16S rRNA gene sequences indicated that strain JchiT belonged to the genus Jeongeupia and that its closest neighbour was Jeongeupia naejangsanensis BIO-TAS4-2T (98.0 % sequence similarity). The major fatty acids (>10 %) of strain JchiT were summed feature 3 (comprising C16 : 1ω7c and/or C16 : 1ω6c), C16 : 0 and C18 : 1ω7c. The major cellular hydroxy fatty acid was C12 : 0 3-OH. The isoprenoid quinone was Q-8 and the genomic DNA G+C content was 66.1 mol%. The polar lipid profile consisted of a mixture of phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylglycerol, diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylserine and two unidentified phospholipids. The DNA–DNA relatedness value between strain JchiT and J. naejangsanensis BIO-TAS4-2T was about 41.0 %. On the basis of the genotypic and phenotypic data, strain JchiT represents a novel species in the genus Jeongeupia , for which the name Jeongeupia chitinilytica sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is JchiT ( = BCRC 80367T  = KCTC 23701T).

A novel actinobacterium, designated strain F22T, was isolated from grassland soil collected from the Ziwuling area on the Loess Plateau, China. The novel strain was found to have morphological and chemotaxonomic characteristics typical of members of the genus Streptomyces . Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences indicated that strain F22T belonged to the genus Streptomyces , being most closely related to Streptomyces resistomycificus NBRC 12814T (98.28 % sequence similarity), Streptomyces ciscaucasicus NBRC 12872T (98.14 %), Streptomyces chartreusis NBRC 12753T (98.14 %) and Streptomyces canus NRRL B-1989T (98.14 %). In DNA–DNA hybridizations and comparisons of morphological and phenotypic data, strain F22T could be distinguished from all of its closest phylogenetic relatives. Strain F22T exhibited antibacterial and antifungal activity, especially against Staphylococcus aureus , Bacillus subtilis and Cylindrocarpon destructans. Based on the DNA–DNA hybridization data and morphological, phenotypic and phylogenetic evidence, strain F22T represents a novel species of the genus Streptomyces , for which the name Streptomyces ziwulingensis sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is F22T ( = CCNWFX 0001T = JCM 18081T = ACCC41875T).

A Gram-reaction-negative, strictly aerobic, non-motile, non-spore-forming and rod-shaped bacterial strain, designated THG-45T, was isolated from soil of a ginseng field of Pocheon province in the Republic of Korea and its taxonomic position was investigated by a polyphasic approach. Growth occurred at 4–30 °C, at pH 5.5–9.0 and with 0–2 % (w/v) NaCl on nutrient agar. On the basis of 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity, strain THG-45T was shown to belong to the genus Pedobacter and was related to Pedobacter borealis G-1T (98.8 %), P. alluvionis NWER-II11T (97.9 %), P. agri PB92T (97.9 %), P. terrae DS-57T (97.5 %), P. suwonensis 15-52T (97.4 %), P. sandarakinus DS-27T (97.0 %) and P. soli 15-51T (97.0 %), but DNA relatedness between strain THG-45T and these strains was below 36 %. The G+C content of the genomic DNA was 39 mol%. The only isoprenoid quinone detected in strain THG-45T was menaquinone-7 (MK-7). The predominant fatty acids were iso-C15 : 0, summed feature 3 (comprising C16 : 1ω6c and/or C16 : 1ω7c) and iso-C17 : 0 3-OH, and the major polar lipids were phosphatidylethanolamine and an unidentified aminophosphoglycolipid. Phenotypic data and phylogenetic inference supported the affiliation of strain THG-45T to the genus Pedobacter , and a number of biochemical tests differentiated strain THG-45T from the recognized species of the genus Pedobacter . Therefore, the novel isolate represents a novel species, for which the name Pedobacter ginsenosidimutans sp. nov. is proposed, with THG-45T as the type strain ( = KACC 14530T = JCM 16721T).

A Gram-staining-negative, rod-shaped, gliding and pale-pink-pigmented bacterium, designated strain ZLM-10T, was isolated from a soil sample collected from an arid area in Xinjiang province, China, and characterized in a taxonomic study using a polyphasic approach. The novel strain grew optimally at 30–37 °C and in the presence of 2 % (w/v) sea salts. The only respiratory quinone detected was MK-7 and the major cellular fatty acids were summed feature 3 (iso-C15 : 0 2-OH and/or C16 : 1ω7c), iso-C15 : 0 and iso-C17 : 0 3-OH. The polar lipids consisted of diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine, an unidentified aminolipid and two unidentified aminophospholipids. The DNA G+C content was 45.4 mol%. Flexirubin-type pigments were not produced. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain ZLM-10T was a member of the phylum Bacteroidetes and appeared most closely related to Cesiribacter roseus 311T (90.2 % sequence similarity), Marivirga sericea LMG 13021T (89.2 %), Cesiribacter andamanensis AMV16T (89.1 %) and Marivirga tractuosa DSM 4126T (89.1 %). On the basis of phenotypic and genotypic data and phylogenetic inference, strain ZLM-10T should be classified as a novel species of a new genus in the family Flammeovirgaceae , for which the name Nafulsella turpanensis gen. nov., sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain of the type species is ZLM-10T ( = CCTCC AB 208222T = KCTC 23983T).

Strain SulfLac1T, a thermophilic, anaerobic and slightly halophilic, rod-shaped bacterium with a sheath-like outer structure (toga), was isolated from a whey digester in Tunisia. The strain’s non-motile cells measured 3–30×1 µm and appeared singly, in pairs or as long chains. The novel strain reduced thiosulfate and elemental sulfur, but not sulfate or sulfite, into sulfide. It grew at 37–65 °C (optimum 55 °C), at pH 6.5–7.9 (optimum pH 6.9) and with 0.2–3 % (w/v) NaCl (optimum 0.5 %). The G+C content of the strain’s genomic DNA was 33.6 mol%. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences indicated that strain SulfLac1T was most closely related to Petrotoga mobilis (91.4 % sequence similarity). Based on phenotypic, phylogenetic and chemotaxonomic evidence, strain SulfLac1T represents a novel species of a new genus within the order Thermotogales , for which the name Defluviitoga tunisiensis gen. nov., sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain of the type species is SulfLac1T ( = DSM 23805T  = JCM 17210T).

A prosthecate bacterial strain, designated G-192T, was isolated from decaying biomass of a haloalkaliphilic cyanobacterium Geitlerinema sp. Z-T0701. The cells were aerobic, Gram-negative, non-endospore-forming and dimorphic, occurring either as sessile bacteria with a characteristic stalk or as motile flagellated cells. The strain utilized a limited range of substrates, mostly peptonaceous, but was able to degrade whole proteins. Growth occurred at 5–46 °C (optimum, 35–40 °C), pH 7.3–10.3 (optimum, pH 8.0–9.0), 0–14 % NaCl (v/w; optimum, 2.0–6.0 %, v/w). The G+C content of the genomic DNA of strain G-192T was 66.8%. Phylogenetic analysis of the 16S rRNA gene sequence revealed that strain G-192T formed a distinct evolutionary lineage within the family Hyphomonadaceae . Strain G-192T showed the highest 16S rRNA sequence similarity to Glycocaulis profundi ZYF765T (95.2%), Oceanicaulis stylophorae GISW-4T (94.2%) and Marinicauda salina WD6-1T (95.5%). The major cellular fatty acids (>5% of the total) were C18:1 ω9c, C18:0 and 11-methyl-C18:1 ω7c. The major polar lipids were glycolipids and phospholipids. The only respiratory quinone was ubiquinone-10 (Q-10). Based on polyphasic results including phylogenomic data, the novel strain could be distinguished from other genera, which suggests that strain G-192T represents a novel species of a new genus, for which the name Alkalicaulis satelles gen. nov., sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is G-192T (=VKM B-3306T=KCTC 72746T). The strain is the first representative of the stalked bacteria associated with a haloalkaliphilic cyanobacterium. Based on phylogenomic indices and phenotypic data, it is proposed to evolve two novel families Maricaulaceae fam. nov. and Robiginitomaculaceae fam. nov. out of the current family Hyphomonadaceae . In addition, it is proposed to place the first two families in the novel order Maricaulales ord. nov. and novel order Hyphomonadales ord. nov. is proposed to accommodate the family Hyphomonadaceae .

Strains of Gram-stain-negative, anaerobic, rod-shaped bacteria were isolated from chinchilla (Chinchilla lanigera) faeces, and strain ST166T was investigated taxonomically. Phylogenetic analyses of 16S rRNA gene sequences revealed that strain ST166T belonged to the genus Parabacteroides . Strain ST166T formed a distinct line of descent, and the highest sequence similarity to ST166T was found with Parabacteroides merdae JCM 9497T (95.6 %) and Parabacteroides johnsonii JCM 13406T (95.0 %). Analysis of hsp60 gene sequences also supported these relationships. Based on the phenotypic and phylogenetic characteristics, the novel species Parabacteroides chinchillae sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain of P. chinchillae sp. nov. is ST166T ( = JCM 17104T = CCUG 62154T).

A pink-pigmented, chemo-organotrophic bacterium, designated strain 03SUJ4T, was isolated from the freshwater of Juam reservoir, Republic of Korea (35° 03′ 43′′ N 127° 14′ 15′′ E). Cells were aerobic, Gram-reaction-negative and non-motile rods. Strain 03SUJ4T grew at pH 6–7 (optimum, pH 6) and at 15–30 °C (optimum, 25 °C). Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences indicated that the isolate belonged to the genus Terriglobus , showing sequence similarities of 97.09 % and 96.82 % to Terriglobus roseus DSM 18391T and Terriglobus saanensis SP1PR4T, respectively. Low rpoB gene sequence similarity with members of the genus Terriglobus and different fingerprints with the repetitive primers BOX, ERIC and REP indicated that the isolate represented a novel species of the genus Terriglobus . The major cellular fatty acids were iso-C15 : 0, C16 : 0, C20 : 1ω9c, C14 : 0 and summed feature 3 (C16 : 1ω7c/C16 : 1ω6c). The DNA G+C content of strain 03SUJ4T was 63.2±0.1 mol% (mean±sd of three determinations). The predominant menaquinone was MK-8. The major polar lipids were phosphatidylethanolamine, diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol and two unidentified phospholipids. Several phenotypic characteristics served to differentiate the novel isolate from recognized members of the genus Terriglobus . On the basis of the evidence presented in this study, a novel species, Terriglobus aquaticus sp. nov. is proposed for strain 03SUJ4T ( = KCTC 23332T = JCM 17517T).

A Gram-stain-negative, rod-shaped and non-endospore-forming bacterium, designated strain AG1-2T, was isolated from Takakia lepidozioides collected from the Gawalong glacier in Tibet, China and characterized using a polyphasic taxonomic approach. The predominant fatty acids of strain AG1-2T were iso-C15 : 0 (36.0 %), iso-C17 : 0 3-OH (20.2 %), summed feature 9 (iso-C17 : 1ω9c and/or C16 : 0 10-methyl, 16.4 %) and summed feature 3 (C16 : 1ω7c and/or C16 : 1ω6c, 11.1 %). The major polar lipids were phosphatidylethanolamine, three unidentified aminolipids and two unidentified lipids. Strain AG1-2T contained MK-6 as the dominant menaquinone, and the genomic DNA G+C content was 37.3 mol%. The phylogenetic analysis based on the 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain AG1-2T was affiliated to species of the genus Chryseobacterium , and its closest related species were Chryseobacterium taiwanense Soil-3-27T, Chryseobacterium hispalense AG13T, Chryseobacterium camelliae THG C4-1T and Chryseobacterium taeanense PHA3-4T with a sequence similarity of 98.0, 97.8, 97.3 and 97.1 %, respectively. However, the DNA–DNA relatedness values between these strains and strain AG1-2T were 29, 21, 21 and 45 %, respectively. Based on phylogenetic inference and phenotypic data, strain AG1-2T is considered to represent a novel species of the genus Chryseobacterium , for which the name Chryseobacterium takakiae sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is AG1-2T ( = CGMCC 1.12488T = DSM 26898T).

A novel bacterium, designated strain Ruye-53T, was isolated from a freshwater pond used to rear tilapiine cichlid fish in Taiwan. The taxonomic position of the novel strain was determined using a polyphasic approach. Strain Ruye-53T was Gram-reaction-negative, aerobic, cream–white coloured, rod-shaped, non-motile and poly-β-hydroxybutyrate-accumulating. Growth occurred at 10–37 °C (optimum between 20 and 25 °C), at pH 6.0–9.0 (optimum between pH 8.0 and pH 9.0) and with 0–1 % (w/v) NaCl (optimum 0 %). Phylogenetic analyses based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain Ruye-53T belonged to the genus Gemmobacter and that its most closely related neighbour was Gemmobacter aquatilis DSM 3857T (97.6 % sequence similarity). The novel strain’s predominant fatty acid was C18 : 1ω7c, its major respiratory quinone was Q-10 and its genomic DNA G+C content was 61.2 mol%. The polar lipid profile consisted of a mixture of phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylcholine, one uncharacterized aminolipid and four uncharacterized phospholipids. The DNA–DNA relatedness value between strain Ruye-53T and Gemmobacter aquatilis DSM 3857T was about 45.5 % (48.2±0.4 % in the reciprocal experiment). On the basis of the genotypic, chemotaxonomic and phenotypic data, strain Ruye-53T represents a novel species in the genus Gemmobacter , for which the name Gemmobacter tilapiae sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is Ruye-53T ( = BCRC 80261T  = KCTC 23310T).
