A novel, red–pink-pigmented strain, designated R2-4T, was isolated from a till sample near Ny-Alesund, Svalbard Archipelago, Norway. Cells were aerobic, Gram-stain-negative and rod-shaped. Growth occurred at 4–30 °C (optimum, 20–22 °C), at pH 6.0–9.0 (optimum, pH 7.0) and with 0–1 % NaCl added to R2A agar. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences indicated that strain R2-4T belonged to the genus Hymenobacter . 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity between strain R2-4T and the type strains of related species of the genus ranged from 94.51 to 96.05 %. Strain R2-4T contained iso-C15 : 0, anteiso-C15 : 0, summed feature 3 (C16 : 1ω6c and/or C16 : 1ω7c), summed feature 4 (C17 : 1 anteiso B and/or iso I) and C16 : 1ω5c as the major cellular fatty acids, MK-7 as the major respiratory quinone, and phosphatidylethanolamine, unknown aminophospholipids, unknown aminolipids and unknown lipids as the main polar lipids. The polyamine was sym-homospermidine. The DNA G+C content of strain R2-4T was 61.6 mol%. On the basis of phylogenetic, physiological and chemotaxonomic data, strain R2-4T is considered to represent a novel species of the genus Hymenobacter , for which the name Hymenobacter arcticus sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is R2-4T ( = CCTCC AB 2012104T = KACC 16881T).

A novel, Gram-stain-negative, aerobic, non-motile and rod-shaped bacterium, designated R9-86T, was isolated from tundra soil collected near Ny-Ålesund, Svalbard Archipelago, Norway (78° N). Growth occurred at 4–28 °C (optimum, 22–25 °C) and at pH 6.0–9.0 (optimum, pH 7.0). Flexirubin-type pigments were absent. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences indicated that strain R9-86T belonged to the genus Terrimonas in the family Chitinophagaceae . 16S rRNA gene sequence similarities between strain R9-86T and the type strains of species of the genus Terrimonas with validly published names ranged from 93.7 to 95.0 %. Strain R9-86T contained iso-C15 : 1-G (25.7 %), iso-C15 : 0 (24.5 %), iso-C17 : 0-3OH (18.3 %) and summed feature 3 (C16 : 1ω7c and/or C16 : 1ω6c, 8.7 %) as its major cellular fatty acids; phosphatidylethanolamine and an unknown polar lipid as its main polar lipids, and MK-7 as its predominant respiratory quinone. The DNA G+C content was 48.4 mol%. On the basis of phenotypic, chemotaxonomic and phylogenetic data, strain R9-86T is considered to represent a novel species of the genus Terrimonas , for which the name Terrimonas arctica sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is R9-86T ( = CCTCC AB 2011004T = NRRL B-59114T).

A Gram-negative, orange-colony-forming, aerobic and non-flagellated bacterium, designated strain SM1202T, was isolated from marine sediment of Kongsfjorden, Svalbard. Analysis of 16S rRNA gene sequences revealed that strain SM1202T was phylogenetically closely related to the genus Polaribacter . It shared the highest 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity with the type strain of Polaribacter dokdonensis (94.2 %) and 92.7–93.9 % sequence similarity with type strains of other known species of the genus Polaribacter . The strain grew at 4–35 °C and with 1.0–5.0 % (w/v) NaCl. It contained iso-C15 : 0, iso-C15 : 0 3-OH, iso-C13 : 0, C15 : 0, iso-C15 : 1 G, iso-C17 : 0 3-OH and C15 : 1ω6c as predominant cellular fatty acids and menaquinone-6 (MK-6) as the major respiratory quinone. The polar lipids of strain SM1202T were phosphatidylethanolamine, one unidentified lipid, two unidentified aminophospholipids and one unidentified aminolipid. The genomic DNA G+C content of strain SM1202T was 36.4 mol%. On the basis of the data from this polyphasic taxonomic study, strain SM1202T represents a novel species in the genus Polaribacter of the family Flavobacteriaceae , for which the name Polaribacter huanghezhanensis sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain of Polaribacter huanghezhanensis is SM1202T ( = CCTCC AB 2013148T = KCTC 32516T). An emended description of the genus Polaribacter is also presented.

A novel pale-pink-coloured strain, designated R9-65T, was isolated from a tundra soil near Ny-Ålesund, Svalbard Archipelago, Norway (78° N). The cells were facultatively anaerobic, Gram-staining-negative, non-motile and rod-shaped. Growth occurred at 4–32 °C (optimum, 25–28 °C), at pH 5.0–9.0 (optimum, pH 6.0–7.0) and with 0–1.0 % (w/v) NaCl (optimum, no NaCl). Flexirubin-type pigments were absent. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences indicated that strain R9-65T belonged to the genus Mucilaginibacter in the family Sphingobacteriaceae . The 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity between strain R9-65T and type strains of related species ranged from 93.4 to 96.6 %. Strain R9-65T contained summed feature 3 (C16 : 1ω7c and/or C16 : 1ω6c, 34.3 %) and iso-C15 : 0 (20.3 %) as major cellular fatty acids, MK-7 as the major respiratory quinone, and phosphatidylethanolamine as the main polar lipid. The DNA G+C content of strain R9-65T was 47.2 mol%. On the basis of phylogenetic, physiological and chemotaxonomic data, strain R9-65T is considered to represent a novel species of the genus Mucilaginibacter , for which the name Mucilaginibacter soli sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is R9-65T ( = CCTCC AB 2010331T = NRRL B-59458T).

A Gram-stain-negative, aerobic, yellow-pigmented, non-motile, non-spore-forming, rod-shaped bacterial strain, Z29T, was isolated from the surface of weathered rock (potassic trachyte) from Nanjing, Jiangsu Province, PR China. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences suggested that strain Z29T belongs to the genus Chitinophaga in the family Chitinophagaceae . Levels of 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity between strain Z29T and the type strains of recognized species of the genus Chitinophaga ranged from 92.7 to 98.2 %. The main fatty acids of strain Z29T were iso-C15 : 0, C16 : 1ω5c and iso-C17 : 0 3-OH. It also contained menaquinone 7 (MK-7) as the respiratory quinone and homospermidine as the main polyamine. The polar lipid profile contained phosphatidylethanolamine, unknown aminolipids, unknown phospholipids and unknown lipids. The total DNA G+C content of strain Z29T was 51.3 mol%. Phenotypic properties and chemotaxonomic data supported the affiliation of strain Z29T with the genus Chitinophaga . The low level of DNA–DNA relatedness (ranging from 14.6 to 29.8 %) to the type strains of other species of the genus Chitinophaga and differential phenotypic properties demonstrated that strain Z29T represents a novel species of the genus Chitinophaga , for which the name Chitinophaga longshanensis sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is Z29T ( = CCTCC AB 2014066T = LMG 28237T).

A Gram-staining-negative, non-flagellated, non-gliding and pleomorphic bacterial strain, designated DPG-25T, was isolated from seawater in a seaweed farm in the South Sea in Korea and its taxonomic position was investigated by using a polyphasic approach. Strain DPG-25T grew optimally at 25 °C, at pH 7.0–7.5 and in the presence of 2 % (w/v) NaCl. Flexirubin-type pigments were not produced. Phylogenetic analyses based on 16S rRNA gene sequences revealed that strain DPG-25T formed a cluster with the type strains of Actibacter sediminis , Aestuariicola saemankumensis and Lutimonas vermicola . Strain DPG-25T exhibited 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity values of 95.3, 93.1 and 93.6 % to the type strains of Actibacter sediminis , Aestuariicola saemankumensis and L. vermicola , respectively. Strain DPG-25T contained MK-6 as the predominant menaquinone and iso-C15 : 0 and iso-C17 : 0 3-OH as the major fatty acids. The major polar lipids detected in strain DPG-25T were phosphatidylethanolamine and one unidentified lipid. The DNA G+C content was 39.9 mol%. Differential phenotypic properties and the phylogenetic distinctiveness of strain DPG-25T demonstrated that this strain is distinguishable from Actibacter sediminis , Aestuariicola saemankumensis and L. vermicola . On the basis of the data presented here, strain DPG-25T represents a novel species in a novel genus of the family Flavobacteriaceae , for which the name Namhaeicola litoreus gen. nov., sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain of Namhaeicola litoreus is DPG-25T ( = KCTC 23702T  = CCUG 61485T).

A novel Gram-negative, aerobic, catalase- and oxidase-positive, non-sporulating, non-motile, rod-shaped bacterium, designated strain UST081027-248T, was isolated from seawater of the Red Sea. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain UST081027-248T fell within the genus Erythrobacter . Levels of 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity between the novel strain and the type strains of Erythrobacter species ranged from 95.3 % (with Erythrobacter gangjinensis ) to 98.2 % (with Erythrobacter citreus ). However, levels of DNA–DNA relatedness between strain UST081027-248T and the type strains of closely related species were below 70 %. Optimal growth of the isolate occurred in the presence of 2.0 % NaCl, at pH 8.0–9.0 and at 28–36 °C. The isolate did not produce bacteriochlorophyll a. The predominant cellular fatty acids were C17 : 1ω6c, summed feature 8 (C18 : 1ω6c and/or C18 : 1ω7c) and C15 : 0 2-OH. The genomic DNA G+C content of strain UST081027-248T was 60.4 mol%. Phenotypic properties and phylogenetic distinctiveness clearly indicated that strain UST081027-248T represents a novel species of the genus Erythrobacter , for which the name Erythrobacter pelagi sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is UST081027-248T ( = JCM 17468T = NRRL 59511T).

A Gram-negative, strictly aerobic, yellow-pigmented rod, designated DK69T, was isolated from soil collected from the waste liquid treatment facility of Bafeng Pharmaceutical Company in the city of Enshi, Hubei Province, China. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences placed strain DK69T in the genus Flavobacterium of the family Flavobacteriaceae . The highest 16S rRNA gene sequence similarities were found with Flavobacterium cauense R2A-7T (96.9 %), Flavobacterium saliperosum AS 1.3801T (96.3 %) and Flavobacterium suncheonense GH29-5T (95.7 %). The major fatty acids (≥5 %) were iso-C15 : 0, iso-C17 : 1ω9c, C15 : 0, iso-C17 : 0 3-OH and iso-C15 : 0 3-OH. The major polar lipids were phosphatidylethanolamine, one unidentified aminolipid and one unidentified lipid. The major respiratory quinone was menaquinone-6. The genomic DNA G+C content was 34.4 mol%. Strain DK69T represents a novel species of the genus Flavobacterium , for which the name Flavobacterium enshiense sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is DK69T ( = CCTCC AB 2011144T  = KCTC 23775T). Emended descriptions of the genus Flavobacterium and Flavobacterium cauense , Flavobacterium saliperosum and Flavobacterium suncheonense are also proposed.

A Gram-stain-negative, non-motile, rod-shaped bacterial strain, named SJ-16T, was isolated from desert soil collected in Inner Mongolia, northern PR China. Strain SJ-16T grew at pH 6.0–11.0 (optimum, pH 8.0–9.0), 4–40 °C (optimum, 30–35 °C) and in the presence of 0–8 % (w/v) NaCl (optimum, 0–2 %). The strain was negative for catalase and positive for oxidase. Phylogenetic analyses based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain SJ-16T clustered with Luteimonas chenhongjianii 100111T and Luteimonas terrae THG-MD21T, and had 98.8, 98.6, 98.3 and <97.9 % of 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity to strains L. chenhongjianii 100111T, L. terrae THG-MD21T, L. aestuarii B9T and all other type strains of the genus Luteimonas , respectively. The major cellular fatty acids were iso-C15 : 0, iso-C16 : 0, summed feature 3 (C16 : 1  ω7c and/or C16 : 1  ω6c) and summed feature 9 (C16 : 0 10-methyl and/or iso-C17 : 1  ω9c). Diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol and phosphatidylethanolamine were the major polar lipids, and ubiquinone-8 was the only respiratory quinone. The genomic DNA G+C content was 69.3 mol%. The digital DNA–DNA hybridization and average nucleotide identity values of strain SJ-16T to L. chenhongjianii 100111T, L. terrae THG-MD21T, L. rhizosphaerae 4-12T and L. aestuarii B9T were 36.9, 37.5, 24.0 and 21.1 %, and 80.9, 80.6, 80.7 and 76.3 %, respectively. Based on phenotypic, physiological and phylogenetic results, strain SJ-16T represents a novel species of the genus Luteimonas , for which the name Luteimonas deserti is proposed. The type strain is SJ-16T (=CGMCC 1.17694T=KCTC 82207T).

A Gram-staining-negative, non-flagellated, non-gliding, aerobic, rod-shaped bacterium, designated DPS-8T, was isolated from coastal sediment of Geoje island in the South Sea, South Korea, and subjected to a polyphasic study. Strain DPS-8T grew optimally at 30 °C, at pH 7.0–7.5 and in the presence of 2 % (w/v) NaCl. A neighbour-joining phylogenetic tree based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain DPS-8T joined the clade comprising the type strains of Winogradskyella species with a high bootstrap resampling value of 93.5 %. Phylogenetic trees constructed using maximum-likelihood and maximum-parsimony algorithms revealed that strain DPS-8T belonged to the genus Winogradskyella . Strain DPS-8T exhibited 94.1–96.5 % 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity to the type strains of species of the genus Winogradskyella . Strain DPS-8T contained MK-6 as the predominant menaquinone and iso-C15 : 1 G, iso-C15 : 0, iso-C17 : 0 3-OH and C16 : 1ω7c and/or iso-C15 : 0 2-OH as the major fatty acids. The major polar lipids of strain DPS-8T were phosphatidylethanolamine and two unidentified lipids. The DNA G+C content of strain DPS-8T was 34.7 mol%. Differential phenotypic properties, together with its phylogenetic distinctiveness, revealed that strain DPS-8T is separate from recognized species of the genus Winogradskyella . On the basis of the data presented, strain DPS-8T is considered to represent a novel species of the genus Winogradskyella , for which the name Winogradskyella litorisediminis sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is DPS-8T ( = KCTC 32110T = CCUG 62215T).

A novel bacterium, designated strain F051-1T, isolated from a seawater sample collected from the coast at Damupo beach in Pohang, Korea, was investigated in a polyphasic taxonomic study. Cells were yellow-pigmented, strictly aerobic, Gram-staining-negative and rod-shaped. The temperature, pH and NaCl ranges for growth were 4–30 °C, pH 6.0–9.0 and 1.0–6.0 % (w/v), respectively. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences indicated that strain F051-1T belongs to the genus Psychroserpens in the family Flavobacteriaceae . Its closest relatives were Psychroserpens burtonensis ACAM 188T (96.8 % 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity) and Psychroserpens mesophilus KOPRI 13649T (95.7 %). The major cellular fatty acids were iso-C15 : 0, iso-C15 : 1 G and anteiso-C15 : 0. The polar lipid profile consisted of a mixture of phosphatidylethanolamine, two unidentified aminolipids, one unidentified phospholipid and eight unidentified lipids. The major respiratory quinone was menaquinone-6 and the genomic DNA G+C content of the strain was 33.5 mol%. On the basis of phenotypic, phylogenetic and genotypic data, strain F051-1T represents a novel species within the genus Psychroserpens , for which the name Psychroserpens damuponensis sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is F051-1T ( = KCTC 23539T  = JCM 17632T).
