The Judicial Commission affirms that the combination Lactobacillus rogosae Holdeman and Moore 1974 represented by the type strain ATCC 27753 listed on the Approved Lists of Bacterial Names does not appear to be currently represented by an extant type strain. Further work is needed to determine whether a derivative of the original type can be found or whether a neotype can be designated.

The International Committee on Systematics of Prokaryotes has formally made final decisions, taking into account the conclusions of the Judicial Commission, on three pending Requests for an Opinion, thereby allowing the corresponding Opinions to be issued. According to Opinion 100, the request for the recognition of strain A1-86 (=DSM 17629=NCIMB 14373) as the neotype strain of Eubacterium rectale (Hauduroy et al. 1937) Prévot 1938 (Approved Lists 1980) is denied, ruling that a neotype does not need to be designated for E. rectale because strain VPI 0990 (=ATCC 33656=CIP 105953) is considered to be a duplicate isolate of the same strain as VPI 0989 (=ATCC 25578) and may serve as its nomenclatural type. Opinion 101 approves the request that strain ATCC 25946 (=DSM 14877) serves as the type strain of Melittangium lichenicola instead of strain ATCC 25944, formally correcting the Approved Lists of Bacterial Names. Opinion 102 concludes that strain Cc m8 (=DSM 14697=CIP 109128=JCM 12621) is an established neotype strain for the species Myxococcus macrosporus , replacing the designated type strain Windsor M271, and that strain Mx s8 (=DSM 14675=JCM 12634) is an established neotype strain for the species Myxococcus stipitatus , replacing the designated type strain Windsor M78, with some additional considerations about the nature of the type material replaced and about the name Corallococcus ( Myxococcus ) macrosporus.

The taxonomic status of saltwater Bdellovibrio -like prokaryotic predators has been revised to assign species to Halobacteriovorax gen. nov. A reclassification of Bacteriovorax marinus as Halobacteriovorax marinus comb. nov. (type strain ATCC BAA-682T = DSM 15412T) and Bacteriovorax litoralis as Halobacteriovorax litoralis comb. nov. (type strain ATCC BAA-684T = DSM 15409T) is proposed. This revision is necessary because a previous proposal to retain saltwater isolates as species of Bacteriovorax and reclassify Bacteriovorax stolpii as Bacteriolyticum stolpii was not approved. The type species of a genus cannot be reassigned to another genus. Bacteriovorax stolpii is thus retained as the type species of Bacteriovorax and Halobacteriovorax marinus is the type species of Halobacteriovorax and of Halobacteriovoraceae fam. nov.

A coccal strain isolated from fresh broccoli was initially identified as Enterococcus saccharolyticus ; however, molecular identification and phenotypic traits did not support this identification. DNA–DNA hybridization with the type strain of E. saccharolyticus (76.4 % relatedness), DNA G+C content (35.7 mol%), phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA, pheS and rpoA gene sequences, rep-PCR fingerprinting and profiles of cellular fatty acids, whole-cell proteins and enzyme activities, together with carbohydrate metabolism characteristics, indicated that this strain is distinct and represents a novel subspecies, for which the name Enterococcus saccharolyticus subsp. taiwanensis subsp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is 812T ( = NBRC 109476T = BCRC 80575T). Furthermore, we present an emended description of Enterococcus saccharolyticus and proposal of Enterococcus saccharolyticus subsp. saccharolyticus subsp. nov. (type strain ATCC 43076T = CCUG 27643T = CCUG 33311T = CIP 103246T = DSM 20726T = JCM 8734T = LMG 11427T = NBRC 100493T = NCIMB 702594T).

The Judicial Commission affirms that, according to information presented to it, the designated type strain of Pseudomonas halophila Fendrich 1989 is DSM 3051 (replacing DSM 3050) and the designated type strain of Halovibrio variabilis Fendrich 1989 is DSM 3050 (replacing DSM 3051). A new name, Halomonas utahensis (Fendrich 1989) Sorokin and Tindall 2006 nom. nov., is created for the species represented by DSM 3051 when treated as a member of the genus Halomonas , because the combination Halomonas halophila (Quesada et al. 1984) Dobson and Franzmann 1996 has priority based on the fact that the epithet halophila in the combination Halomonas halophila (Quesada et al. 1984) Dobson and Franzmann 1996 (basoynm Deleya halophila Quesada et al. 1984) has priority over the epithet halophila should the taxon Pseudomonas halophila Fendrich 1989 be treated as a member of the genus Halomonas . The combination Halomonas variabilis (Fendrich 1989) Dobson and Franzmann 1996 is rejected. The combination Halovibrio denitrificans Sorokin et al. 2006 is validly published with an emendation of the description of the genus Halovibrio Fendrich 1989 emend. Sorokin et al. 2006.

During a study assessing the diversity of the Bacillus pumilus group it became apparent that the type strains of both Bacillus aerophilus and Bacillus stratosphericus were not available from any established culture collection, nor from the authors who originally described them. Therefore, type strains of these species cannot be included in any further scientific studies. It is therefore proposed that the Judicial Commission of the International Committee of Systematics of Prokaryotes place the names Bacillus aerophilus and Bacillus stratosphericus on the list of rejected names, if suitable replacements for the type strains are not found or if neotype strains are not proposed within two years following the publication of this Request for an Opinion.

On the basis of 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis and several key phenotypic features, it was ascertained that the culture cited as the type strain of the species Hyphomonas rosenbergii , ATCC 43869T, does not conform to the description of the species, [Weiner, R. M., Melick, M., O’Neill, K. & Quintero, E. (2000). Int J Syst Evol Microbiol 50, 459–469]. The type strain does not exist in any other established culture collection or with the authors who described this species. Therefore, it cannot be included in any scientific study. It is proposed that the Judicial Commission place the name Hyphomonas rosenbergii on the list of rejected names if a suitable replacement type strain is not found or a neotype is not proposed within two years following the publication of this Request for an Opinion.

During a recent study on members of the genus Lactobacillus we realized that cultures of Lactobacillus fornicalis TV 1018T (=DSM 13171T=ATCC 700934T) are no longer available from the online catalogue of the German Collection of Microorganisms and Cell Cultures GmbH, being displayed as Lactobacillus plantarum at the American Type Culture Collection. Based on data currently available, the organism deposited as ATCC 700934T is a member of the species Lactobacillus plantarum subs. plantarum. Therefore, the type strain of Lactobacillus fornicalis cannot be included in any further scientific comparative study. This matter is referred to the Judicial Commission, asking for an opinion on the status of the species.

A recent study on members of the genus Actinobaculum revealed that cultures of the species Actinobaculum massiliense CCUG 47753T ( = DSM 19118T) currently being distributed do not conform to the properties of the type strain of A. massiliense CIP 107404T given by Greub & Raoult [Greub, G. & Raoult, D. (2002). J Clin Microbiol 40, 3938–3941]. The original strain, CIP 107404T is no longer available from the Biological Resource Center of Institut Pasteur, Paris. Based on data currently available, the organism currently deposited as CCUG 47753T and DSM 19118T is a member of the species Actinobaculum schaalii . Clearly, the organism deposited as CCUG 47753T and DSM 19118T as the type strain of the species Actinobaculum massiliense does not have the properties given by Greub & Raoult. Based on the absence of an authentic type strain, the Judicial Commission is requested to examine the status of the name Actinobaculum massiliense Greub and Raoult 2006 and to issue an Opinion.
