A 4-phenyl-3-butenoic acid-producing actinomycete, designated strain VK-A60T, was isolated from a soil sample collected from Koyang, Korea. Morphological and chemical characteristics of the strain were consistent with those of the genus Streptomyces. The cell wall of the strain contains ll-diaminopimelic acid. The predominant fatty acids are anteiso-C15 : 0, iso-C16 : 0 and C16 : 0. The strain formed a distinct monophyletic line within the 16S rRNA gene sequence phylogenetic tree. Analyses of its morphological, physiological and biochemical characteristics, together with random amplified polymorphic DNA and DNA–DNA relatedness data, confirmed that strain VK-A60T represents a novel Streptomyces taxon that is distinguishable from closely related reference strains. Strain VK-A60T (=KCCM 10555T=NBRC 100598T) is proposed as the type strain of a novel species, for which the name Streptomyces koyangensis sp. nov. is proposed.

Actinomycete strain VC-A46T, which exhibits antifungal activity, was isolated from a soil sample collected from Cheonan, Korea. The strain was determined to belong to the genus Streptomyces, based on its morphological and chemotaxonomic characteristics. The cell wall of this strain contained ll-diaminopimelic acid. The predominant fatty acids were iso-C16 : 0, C16 : 0 and C16 : 1 cis 9. The DNA G+C content of strain VC-A46T was 75·5 mol%. Phylogenetic analysis of the 16S rRNA gene sequence of this strain revealed that it differed from those of the described streptomycetes available in public databases. Analyses of DNA–DNA relatedness data, together with data regarding the strain's morphological, physiological and biochemical characteristics, also confirmed that this strain constitutes a novel Streptomyces taxon, which is distinguishable from closely related reference strains. Therefore, it is proposed that strain VC-A46T (=KCCM 42119T=NBRC 100940T) represents the type strain of a novel species, named Streptomyces cheonanensis sp. nov.

An actinomycete, designated strain GIMN4.003T, was isolated from seawater collected in Sanya, China. It produced white aerial mycelium and yellow substrate mycelium on Gause’s synthetic agar medium no. 1. The substrate mycelium colour was not sensitive to pH. Scanning electron microscopy observations revealed that GIMN4.003T produced straight to flexuous spore chains of rough to warty spores. ll-Diaminopimelic acid was present in the cell-wall hydrolysate. Based on chemotaxonomy and morphological features, strain GIMN4.003T was identified as a member of the genus Streptomyces. Melanin was not produced. No antimicrobial activity was detected against Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Bacillus subtilis, Penicillium citrinum or Candida albicans. Analysis of the 16S rRNA gene sequence revealed that the highest sequence similarity was to Streptomyces radiopugnans R97T (99.0 %). However, DNA relatedness between GIMN4.003T and S. radiopugnans DSM 41901T was low (41.24±1.47 %). Furthermore, the morphological, physiological and biochemical characteristics of strain GIMN4.003T were different from those of S. radiopugnans DSM 41901T and the type strains of other closely related Streptomyces species. On the basis of its physiological and molecular properties, it is evident that strain GIMN4.003T ( = CCTCCM 208215T  = NRRL B-24801T) represents the type strain of a novel species within the genus Streptomyces, for which the name Streptomyces fenghuangensis sp. nov. is proposed.

A novel actinomycete, designated strain 2902at01T was isolated from soil collected at a mangrove forest in Zhanjiang, Guangdong province, China. The strain was identified using a polyphasic classification method. The 16S rRNA gene sequence of strain 2902at01T showed the highest similarity to Micromonospora equina Y22T (98.3 %) and Micromonospora pattaloongensis TJ2-2T (98.1 %). Phylogenetic analysis based on the gyrB gene sequence also clearly showed that the strain was different from any previously discovered species of the genus Micromonospora. The characteristic whole-cell sugars were ribose and xylose. The cell-wall hydrolysates contained alanine, asparagine, glycine and meso-diaminopimelic acid. MK-10(H6) and MK-10(H8) were the major menaquinones of the novel strain. The predominant fatty acids were iso-C15 : 0, anteiso-C15 : 0 and iso-C16 : 0. The characteristic polar lipids of strain 2902at01T were phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylinositol, phosphatidylinositol mannoside and diphosphatidylglycerol. The DNA G+C content was 70.2 mol%. DNA–DNA hybridization data combined with other physiological and biochemical features could distinguish strain 2902at01T from the reference strains M. equina Y22T and M. pattaloongensis TJ2-2 T. On the basis of these phenotypic and genotypic data, strain 2902at01T represents a novel species of the genus Micromonospora, for which the name Micromonospora zhanjiangensis sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is 2902at01T ( = CCTCC AA2014018T = DSM 45902T).

A Gram-positive, spore-forming, aerobic actinomycete, strain Gsoil 519T, was isolated from soil of a ginseng field of Pocheon province in South Korea. The closest phylogenetic relatives were Streptomyces marinus Sp080513GE-26T (97.94 % 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity), Streptomyces albiaxialis NRRL B-24327T (97.84 %), Streptomyces albus subsp. albus DSM 40313T (97.84 %), Streptomyces almquistii NBRC 13015T (97.81 %), Streptomyces gibsonii NBRC 15415T (97.81 %), Streptomyces rangoonensis NBRC 13078T (97.81 %), Streptomyces sodiiphilus YIM 80305T (97.77 %) and Streptomyces flocculus NBRC 13041T (97.67 %). The G+C content of the genomic DNA was 71.8 mol%. The chemotaxonomic data [MK-9(H6) and MK-9(H8) as the major menaquinones; ll-diaminopimelic acid as a component of the cell-wall peptidoglycan; ribose, xylose, mannose and glucose as the major cell-wall sugars; and anteiso-C15 : 0, iso-C15 : 0, iso-C17 : 0, anteiso-C17 : 0 and C16 : 0 as the major fatty acids] supported the affiliation of strain Gsoil 519T to the genus Streptomyces . The physiological and biochemical characteristics and the low level of DNA–DNA relatedness differentiated the isolate genotypically and phenotypically from recognized members of the genus Streptomyces . The isolate, therefore, represents a novel species, for which the name Streptomyces panacagri sp. nov. is proposed, with Gsoil 519T ( = KCTC 19139T = DSM 41871T) as the type strain.

An actinomycete that developed sporangia containing four spores in a single row at the ends of short sporangiophores on branched aerial hyphae was isolated from subtropical forest soil. The isolate contained menaquinone MK-9(H4), glutamic acid, alanine and meso-diaminopimelic acid as cell-wall amino acids and madurose in the whole-cell hydrolysate. The 16S rRNA gene sequence indicated that the isolate formed a monophyletic cluster with Planotetraspora mira. On the basis of morphological and chemotaxonomic characteristics, phylogenetic analysis and DNA–DNA relatedness data, a novel species of the genus Planotetraspora is proposed, Planotetraspora silvatica sp. nov. (type strain, TT 00-51T=NBRC 100141T=DSM 44746T).

An obligately aerobic, Gram-negative, non-spore-forming, non-motile, spherical bacterium, designated strain 04OKA010-24T, was isolated from seawater surrounding the hard coral Galaxea fascicularis L., collected at Majanohama, Akajima, Japan, and was subjected to a polyphasic taxonomic study. Phylogenetic analyses based on the 16S rRNA gene sequence indicated that the new strain represented a member of the phylum ‘Verrucomicrobia’ and shared 84–95 % sequence similarity with cultivated strains of ‘Verrucomicrobia’ subdivision 4. Amino acid analysis of the cell-wall hydrolysate indicated the absence of muramic acid and diaminopimelic acid, which suggested that the strain did not contain peptidoglycan in the cell wall. The G+C content of the DNA was 53.9 mol%. MK-7 was the major menaquinone and C14 : 0, C18 : 1 ω9c and C18 : 0 were the major fatty acids. On the basis of these data, it was concluded that strain 04OKA010-24T represents a novel species in a new genus in subdivision 4 of the phylum ‘Verrucomicrobia’, for which the name Coraliomargarita akajimensis gen. nov., sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain of Coraliomargarita akajimensis is 04OKA010-24T (=MBIC06463T=IAM 15411T=KCTC 12865T).

Two moderately halophilic Gram-negative bacteria were isolated from a sample taken from the brine–seawater interface of the Shaban Deep in the Red Sea. Phylogenetic analysis of the 16S rRNA gene sequence showed that these organisms represent a novel species of the genus Marinobacter. Cells of the new isolates formed non-pigmented colonies and were motile by means of a single polar flagellum. Strains SD-14BT and SD-14C grew optimally at 35–37 °C, in 5 % NaCl and at pH 7.5–8.0. The organisms were aerobic, but reduced nitrate to nitrogen under anaerobic conditions. Acid was produced from only a few carbohydrates. Ubiquinone 9 was the major respiratory quinone. The major fatty acids of strains SD-14BT and SD-14C were C16 : 0, C18 : 1 ω9c, summed feature 3 (C16 : 1 ω6c/C16 : 1 ω7c) and C12 : 0 3-OH. The DNA G+C contents were 55.9 and 55.7 mol%, respectively. On the basis of the phylogenetic analyses and physiological and biochemical characteristics, it is proposed that strains SD-14BT and SD-14C represent a novel species of the genus Marinobacter, with the name Marinobacter salsuginis sp. nov. The type strain is strain SD-14BT (=DSM 18347T=LMG 23697T).

A novel actinomycete, strain ST1-08T, was isolated from the stem of Stemona sp. in Thailand. The taxonomic position of this isolate was determined by using a polyphasic approach. Strain ST1-08T contained meso-diaminopimelic acid in the cell-wall peptidoglycan, and arabinose and galactose as diagnostic sugars of the whole-cell hydrolysate, which are typical properties of members of the genus Amycolatopsis. Strain ST1-08T grew at 15–40 °C, pH 6–9 and on 5 % (w/v) NaCl. Gelatin liquefaction, starch hydrolysis and skimmed milk peptonization were positive. The strain utilized l-arabinose, d-glucose, glycerol, myo-inositol, d-mannitol and l-rhamnose. The predominant menaquinone was MK-9(H4) and the major cellular fatty acids were iso-C16 : 0 and iso-C15 : 0.The major polar lipids were diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine, hydroxyl-phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylinositol and phosphatidylglycerol. The 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis revealed that the strain was closely related to Amycolatopsis pretoriensis JCM 12673T (98.99 %) and Amycolatopsis lexingtonensis JCM 12672T (98.87 %). The DNA G+C content of strain ST1-08T was 71.2 mol%. The DNA–DNA relatedness values among strain ST1-08T, A. pretoriensis JCM 12673T and A. lexingtonensis JCM 12672T were lower than 70 %, the cut-off level for assigning strains to the same species. On the basis of phenotypic and genotypic characteristics, strain ST1-08T represents a novel species of the genus Amycolatopsis, for which the name Amycolatopsis stemonae is proposed. The type strain is ST1-08T( = JCM 30050T = PCU 339T = TISTR 2278T).

A Gram-reaction-positive, high DNA G+C content, non-motile actinobacterium, strain D7-21T, was isolated from dried bat dung inside a natural cave and its taxonomic status was examined by using a polyphasic approach. The 16S rRNA gene sequence study showed that the isolate belonged to the genus Rhodococcus and formed a cluster with Rhodococcus defluvii (98.98 % gene similarity), Rhodococcus equi (98.62 %) and Rhodococcus kunmingensis (97.66 %). Whole-cell hydrolysates contained meso-diaminopimelic acid, arabinose and galactose as the diagnostic diamino acid and sugars. MK-8(H2) was the predominant menaquinone. The major polar lipids were diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylinositol, phosphatidylinositol mannoside, an unknown phosphoglycolipid and an unknown glycolipid. Mycolic acids were present. The major fatty acids were C16 : 0, C18 : 1ω9c and 10-methyl C18 : 0. The DNA G+C content was 70.1 mol%. A battery of phenotypic features and DNA–DNA relatedness data support that strain D7-21T ( = KCTC 29469T = DSM 46727T) represents a novel species of the genus Rhodococcus, for which Rhodococcus antrifimi sp. nov. is proposed.

A novel filamentous bacterial strain, A-T 5190T, which developed irregular sporangia at the end of sporangiophores on substrate mycelia, was isolated from dry evergreen forest soil collected in Thailand. The 16S rRNA gene sequence and phylogenetic analysis indicated that strain A-T 5190T belonged to the genus Actinoplanes and was related most closely to Actinoplanes palleronii NBRC 14916T (98.88 % similarity) and Actinoplanes rectilineatus NBRC 13941T (98.54 %). DNA–DNA relatedness values between strain A-T 5190T and its closest relatives were below 70 %. The cell-wall peptidoglycan contained meso-diaminopimelic acid. The whole-cell sugars contained rhamnose, ribose, galactose and xylose. The predominant menaquinone was MK-9(H4). The diagnostic phospholipids were phosphatidylethanolamine, diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol and phosphatidylinositol. The predominant cellular fatty acids were unsaturated fatty acid C17 : 1 and branched fatty acids iso-C16 : 0, iso-C15 : 0 and anteiso-C17 : 0. The G+C content of the genomic DNA was 71.9 mol%. Evidence from phenotypic, chemotaxonomic and genotypic studies indicate that strain A-T 5190T represents a novel species of the genus Actinoplanes, for which the name Actinoplanes luteus sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is A-T 5190T ( = BCC 41582T = NBRC 109644T).
