An obligately aerobic, Gram-negative, non-spore-forming, non-motile, spherical bacterium, designated strain 04OKA010-24T, was isolated from seawater surrounding the hard coral Galaxea fascicularis L., collected at Majanohama, Akajima, Japan, and was subjected to a polyphasic taxonomic study. Phylogenetic analyses based on the 16S rRNA gene sequence indicated that the new strain represented a member of the phylum ‘Verrucomicrobia’ and shared 84–95 % sequence similarity with cultivated strains of ‘Verrucomicrobia’ subdivision 4. Amino acid analysis of the cell-wall hydrolysate indicated the absence of muramic acid and diaminopimelic acid, which suggested that the strain did not contain peptidoglycan in the cell wall. The G+C content of the DNA was 53.9 mol%. MK-7 was the major menaquinone and C14 : 0, C18 : 1 ω9c and C18 : 0 were the major fatty acids. On the basis of these data, it was concluded that strain 04OKA010-24T represents a novel species in a new genus in subdivision 4 of the phylum ‘Verrucomicrobia’, for which the name Coraliomargarita akajimensis gen. nov., sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain of Coraliomargarita akajimensis is 04OKA010-24T (=MBIC06463T=IAM 15411T=KCTC 12865T).

A thermophilic, anaerobic, chemolithoautotrophic bacterium was isolated from the walls of an active deep-sea hydrothermal vent chimney on the East Pacific Rise at 9° 50′ N. Cells of the organism were Gram-negative, motile rods that were about 1·0 μm in length and 0·6 μm in width. Growth occurred between 60 and 80 °C (optimum at 75 °C), 0·5 and 4·5 % (w/v) NaCl (optimum at 2 %) and pH 5 and 7 (optimum at 5·5). Generation time under optimal conditions was 1·57 h. Growth occurred under chemolithoautotrophic conditions in the presence of H2 and CO2, with nitrate or sulfur as the electron acceptor and with concomitant formation of ammonium or hydrogen sulfide, respectively. Thiosulfate, sulfite and oxygen were not used as electron acceptors. Acetate, formate, lactate and yeast extract inhibited growth. No chemoorganoheterotrophic growth was observed on peptone, tryptone or Casamino acids. The genomic DNA G+C content was 54·6 mol%. Phylogenetic analyses of the 16S rRNA gene sequence indicated that the organism was a member of the domain Bacteria and formed a deep branch within the phylum Aquificae, with Thermovibrio ruber as its closest relative (94·4 % sequence similarity). On the basis of phylogenetic, physiological and genetic considerations, it is proposed that the organism represents a novel species within the newly described genus Thermovibrio. The type strain is Thermovibrio ammonificans HB-1T (=DSM 15698T=JCM 12110T).

An obligately aerobic, spherical, non-motile, pale-yellow pigmented bacterium was isolated from a piece of leaf of seagrass, Enhalus acoroides (L.f.) Royle, grown in Okinawa, Japan and was subjected to a polyphasic taxonomic study. Phylogenetic analyses based on 16S rRNA gene sequences revealed that the novel isolate N5FB36-5T shared approximately 96–98 % sequence similarity with the species of the genus Pelagicoccus of the family Puniceicoccaceae within the phylum ‘Verrucomicrobia’. The DNA–DNA relatedness values of strain N5FB36-5T with Pelagicoccus mobilis 02PA-Ca-133T and Pelagicoccus albus YM14-201T were below 70 %, which is accepted as the phylogenetic definition of a novel species. β-Lactam antibiotic susceptibility test and amino acid analysis of the cell wall hydrolysates indicated the absence of muramic acid and diaminopimelic acid in the cell walls, which suggested that this strain lacks an ordinary Gram-negative type of peptidoglycan in the cell wall. The DNA G+C content of strain N5FB36-5T was 51.6 mol%; MK-7 was the major menaquinone; and the presence of C16 : 0, C16 : 1 ω7c and anteiso-C15 : 0 as the major cellular fatty acids supported the identification of the novel isolate as a member of the genus Pelagicoccus. On the basis of polyphasic taxonomic data, it was concluded that this strain should be classified as a novel species of the genus Pelagicoccus, for which the name Pelagicoccus croceus sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is N5FB36-5T (=MBIC08282T=KCTC 12903T).

A strictly aerobic, Gram-negative, gliding, dull-orange-pigmented, rod-shaped bacterium, designated strain Shu-F-UV2-2T, was isolated from sediment (Carp Island, Republic of Palau) and was the focus of a polyphasic taxonomic study. Phylogenetic analyses based on the 16S rRNA gene sequence revealed that the novel isolate was affiliated to the family ‘Flammeovirgaceae’ of the phylum Bacteroidetes and that it showed highest sequence similarity (85.5 %) to Flammeovirga yaeyamensis NBRC 100898T. The novel isolate could be differentiated phenotypically and physiologically from recognized members of the family ‘Flammeovirgaceae’. The G+C content of the DNA was 43.0 mol%, MK-7 was the major menaquinone and iso-C15 : 0, C16 : 1 ω7c and C16 : 1 ω5c were the major fatty acids. On the basis of this polyphasic evidence, it was concluded that strain Shu-F-UV2-2T represents a novel species in a new genus of the family ‘Flammeovirgaceae’, for which the name Perexilibacter aurantiacus gen. nov., sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is Shu-F-UV2-2T (=MBIC06993T=IAM 15413T=KCTC 12867T).

A novel actinomycete, strain SST-8T, was isolated from sand sediment of Samyang Beach in Jeju, Korea, and subjected to a polyphasic taxonomic study. The organism, which produced opaque, circular, yellow colonies, with a coryneform morphology, showed the following chemotaxonomic characteristics: meso-diaminopimelic acid as the diamino acid in the peptidoglycan, MK-8(H2) as the major menaquinone, phosphatidylglycerol as the only polar lipid, anteiso-C15 : 0 and anteiso-C17 : 0 as major fatty acids and a DNA G+C content of 70.7 mol%. The combination of morphological and chemotaxonomic features supported its classification in the genus Brevibacterium. Phylogenetic analyses, based on 16S rRNA gene sequence studies, showed that strain SST-8T formed an intermediate branch between the Brevibacterium luteolum/Brevibacterium otitidis and Brevibacterium mcbrellneri/Brevibacterium paucivorans clusters. Sequence similarity calculations based on a neighbour-joining analysis revealed that the closest relatives of strain SST-8T were the type strains of B. paucivorans (96.6 %), B. luteolum (96.5 %), B. mcbrellneri (96.3 %), Brevibacterium avium (96.0 %) and B. otitidis (95.9 %). Based on a broad set of phenotypic and genetic data, it was evident that the strain represents a novel species of the genus Brevibacterium. The name Brevibacterium samyangense sp. nov. is proposed, with SST-8T (=NRRL B-41420T=KCCM 42316T) as the type strain.

In 2001, a Gram-variable, facultatively anaerobic, endospore-forming bacterium isolated from biodeteriorated mural paintings in the Servilia tomb of the Roman necropolis of Carmona was deposited as Paenibacillus strain LMG 19508. Subsequently, the strain was characterized in detail using phenotypic and molecular methods. The 16S rRNA gene sequence confirmed that the strain belongs to the genus Paenibacillus and indicated its relationship to Paenibacillus mendelii CCM 4839T (96.7 % sequence similarity). The predominant menaquinone was MK-7. The cell wall contained meso-diaminopimelic acid of the A1γ type. The DNA G+C content (50 mol%) and the major fatty acid (anteiso-C15 : 0) of strain LMG 19508T were also consistent with its affiliation to the genus Paenibacillus. DNA–DNA hybridization distinguished strain LMG 19508T from other phylogenetically related Paenibacillus species. Therefore, the isolate represents a novel species, for which the name Paenibacillus sepulcri sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is CCM 7311T (=LMG 19508T).

A Gram-positive, spore-forming, aerobic actinomycete, strain Gsoil 519T, was isolated from soil of a ginseng field of Pocheon province in South Korea. The closest phylogenetic relatives were Streptomyces marinus Sp080513GE-26T (97.94 % 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity), Streptomyces albiaxialis NRRL B-24327T (97.84 %), Streptomyces albus subsp. albus DSM 40313T (97.84 %), Streptomyces almquistii NBRC 13015T (97.81 %), Streptomyces gibsonii NBRC 15415T (97.81 %), Streptomyces rangoonensis NBRC 13078T (97.81 %), Streptomyces sodiiphilus YIM 80305T (97.77 %) and Streptomyces flocculus NBRC 13041T (97.67 %). The G+C content of the genomic DNA was 71.8 mol%. The chemotaxonomic data [MK-9(H6) and MK-9(H8) as the major menaquinones; ll-diaminopimelic acid as a component of the cell-wall peptidoglycan; ribose, xylose, mannose and glucose as the major cell-wall sugars; and anteiso-C15 : 0, iso-C15 : 0, iso-C17 : 0, anteiso-C17 : 0 and C16 : 0 as the major fatty acids] supported the affiliation of strain Gsoil 519T to the genus Streptomyces . The physiological and biochemical characteristics and the low level of DNA–DNA relatedness differentiated the isolate genotypically and phenotypically from recognized members of the genus Streptomyces . The isolate, therefore, represents a novel species, for which the name Streptomyces panacagri sp. nov. is proposed, with Gsoil 519T ( = KCTC 19139T = DSM 41871T) as the type strain.

An actinomycete that developed sporangia containing four spores in a single row at the ends of short sporangiophores on branched aerial hyphae was isolated from subtropical forest soil. The isolate contained menaquinone MK-9(H4), glutamic acid, alanine and meso-diaminopimelic acid as cell-wall amino acids and madurose in the whole-cell hydrolysate. The 16S rRNA gene sequence indicated that the isolate formed a monophyletic cluster with Planotetraspora mira. On the basis of morphological and chemotaxonomic characteristics, phylogenetic analysis and DNA–DNA relatedness data, a novel species of the genus Planotetraspora is proposed, Planotetraspora silvatica sp. nov. (type strain, TT 00-51T=NBRC 100141T=DSM 44746T).

A Gram-stain-positive, endospore-forming, rod-shaped bacterium, designated XJ259T, was isolated from a cold spring sample from Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region, China. The isolate grew optimally at 20–30 °C and pH 7.3–7.8. Comparative analysis of the 16S rRNA gene sequence showed that isolate XJ259T belonged phylogenetically to the genus Paenibacillus, and was most closely related to Paenibacillus xinjiangensis B538T (with 96.6 % sequence similarity), Paenibacillus glycanilyticus DS-1T (96.3 %) and Paenibacillus castaneae Ch-32T (96.1 %), sharing less than 96.0 % sequence similarity with all other members of the genus Paenibacillus. Chemotaxonomic analysis revealing menaquinone-7 (MK-7) as the major isoprenoid quinone, diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine and two unknown phosphoglycolipids as the major cellular polar lipids, a DNA G+C content of 47.0 mol%, and anteiso-C15 : 0 and C16 : 0 as the major fatty acids supported affiliation of the new isolate to the genus Paenibacillus. Based on these data, isolate XJ259T is considered to represent a novel species of the genus Paenibacillus, for which the name Paenibacillus algorifonticola sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is XJ259T ( = CGMCC 1.10223T  = JCM 16598T).

A novel actinobacterium, designated strain C4-31T, was isolated from soil collected from a cave. Cells were aerobic, Gram-reaction-positive, oxidase-negative, catalase-positive and non-motile cocci. Comparison of 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that the organism occupied a distinct phylogenetic position within the suborder Frankineae, with sequence similarity values of less than 93.2 % to members of this suborder. The diagnostic diamino acid in the cell-wall peptidoglycan was meso-diaminopimelic acid. The major menaquinone was MK-9(H4). The polar lipids were diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylinositol, phosphatidylinositol mannoside, an unknown aminophospholipid and an unknown phospholipid. The major fatty acids were iso-C16 : 0, C17 : 1ω6c and C16 : 0. The G+C content of the DNA was 62.8 mol%. On the basis of morphological and chemotaxonomic data as well as phylogenetic evidence, strain C4-31T ( = KCTC 39556T = DSM 100065T) is considered to represent the type strain of a novel species of a new genus in the suborder Frankineae, for which the name Antricoccus suffuscus gen. nov., sp. nov. is proposed.

A Gram-stain-variable, rod-shaped, non-motile and endospore-forming bacterium, designated strain HZ1T, was isolated from a sample of bank side soil from Hangzhou city, Zhejiang province, PR China. On the basis of 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis, strain HZ1T was closely related to members of the genus Paenibacillus, sharing the highest levels of sequence similarity with Paenibacillus agarexedens DSM 1327T (94.4 %), Paenibacillus sputi KIT00200-70066-1T (94.4 %). Growth occurred at 15–42 °C (optimum 30–37 °C), pH 5.0–9.5 (optimum pH 7.0–8.0) and NaCl concentrations of up to 6.0 % (w/v) were tolerated (optimum 0.5 %). The dominant respiratory quinone was MK-7 and the DNA G+C content was 40.1 mol%. The major fatty acids were anteiso-C15 : 0 and iso-C16 : 0. The major polar lipids of strain HZ1T were diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine and several unknown lipids. The diagnostic diamino acid found in the cell-wall peptidoglycan was meso-diaminopimelic acid. Based on its phenotypic and chemotaxonomic characteristics and phylogenetic data, strain HZ1T represents a novel species of the genus Paenibacillus, for which the name Paenibacillus ripae sp. nov. (type strain HZ1T = CCTCC AB 2014276T = LMG 28639T) is proposed.
