A marine actinomycete strain, designated KSW2-15T, was isolated from a dried seaweed sample collected from a sandy beach on the coast of Jeju in the Republic of Korea. The organism produced non-motile, non-endospore-forming, Gram-positive, coccoid cells. The colonies were circular, translucent and yellow in colour with entire margins. meso-Diaminopimelic acid was present as the diamino acid of the peptidoglycan. The acyl type of the muramic acid was acetyl. Mycolic acids were not present. The predominant menaquinone was MK-8(H4). The polar lipids were phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylinositol and diphosphatidylglycerol. The major cellular fatty acids were of the saturated, unsaturated and iso-branched methyl types. The DNA G+C content was 74 mol%. Phylogenetic analyses based on 16S rRNA gene sequences revealed that strain KSW2-15T formed a loose association with ‘Candidatus Nostocoida limicola’, within the radiation of the family Intrasporangiaceae of the suborder Micrococcineae. The organism showed the highest levels of sequence similarity with ‘Candidatus Nostocoida limicola’ (96.1 %), Terrabacter tumescens (96.1 %) and Terrabacter terrae (96.0 %). The levels of 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity between the isolate and members of other genera of the family Intrasporangiaceae were in the range 92.1–95.5 %. On the basis of the polyphasic evidence, the isolate should be classified within a novel genus and species, for which the name Phycicoccus jejuensis gen. nov., sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain of Phycicoccus jejuensis is strain KSW2-15T (=KCCM 42315T=NRRL B-24460T).

A novel actinomycete strain, designated KLBMP 1356T, was isolated from the root of halophyte Tamarix chinensis Lour. collected from the coastal area of Jiangsu province, PR China. The isolate was characterized using a polyphasic approach. Comparative analysis of the 16S rRNA gene sequence indicated that strain KLBMP 1356T was phylogenetically related to members of the family Pseudonocardiaceae and formed a distinct monophyletic clade between the genera Amycolatopsis (93.1–94.7 % 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity), Prauserella (93.6–95.1 %) and Saccharomonospora (93.2–94.3 %). The isolate displayed long spore chains containing rod-shaped and smooth-surfaced spores. Strain KLBMP 1356T contained meso-diaminopimelic acid as the diagnostic diamino acid, and galactose, arabinose and glucose as the whole-cell sugars. The major menaquinone was MK-9(H4) and the fatty acid profile was characterized by the predominance of iso-C16 : 0, C17 : 1ω8c, C17 : 1ω6c and C17 : 0. The polar lipids comprised diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylinositol, unknown aminophospholipids and an unknown glycolipid. Mycolic acids were not present. The G+C content of the genomic DNA was 67.2 mol%. On the basis of the evidence from this polyphasic study, strain KLBMP 1356T is considered to represent a novel species of a new genus in the family Pseudonocardiaceae, for which the name Tamaricihabitans halophyticus gen. nov., sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain of the type species is KLBMP 1356T ( = DSM 45765T = NBRC 109361T).

A Gram-staining-negative, non-flagellated, non-gliding and pleomorphic bacterial strain, designated DPG-25T, was isolated from seawater in a seaweed farm in the South Sea in Korea and its taxonomic position was investigated by using a polyphasic approach. Strain DPG-25T grew optimally at 25 °C, at pH 7.0–7.5 and in the presence of 2 % (w/v) NaCl. Flexirubin-type pigments were not produced. Phylogenetic analyses based on 16S rRNA gene sequences revealed that strain DPG-25T formed a cluster with the type strains of Actibacter sediminis , Aestuariicola saemankumensis and Lutimonas vermicola . Strain DPG-25T exhibited 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity values of 95.3, 93.1 and 93.6 % to the type strains of Actibacter sediminis , Aestuariicola saemankumensis and L. vermicola , respectively. Strain DPG-25T contained MK-6 as the predominant menaquinone and iso-C15 : 0 and iso-C17 : 0 3-OH as the major fatty acids. The major polar lipids detected in strain DPG-25T were phosphatidylethanolamine and one unidentified lipid. The DNA G+C content was 39.9 mol%. Differential phenotypic properties and the phylogenetic distinctiveness of strain DPG-25T demonstrated that this strain is distinguishable from Actibacter sediminis , Aestuariicola saemankumensis and L. vermicola . On the basis of the data presented here, strain DPG-25T represents a novel species in a novel genus of the family Flavobacteriaceae , for which the name Namhaeicola litoreus gen. nov., sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain of Namhaeicola litoreus is DPG-25T ( = KCTC 23702T  = CCUG 61485T).

A novel filamentous actinomycete strain, designated TRM 46004T, was isolated from sediment of Aiding Lake in Tulufan Basin (42° 64′ N 89° 26′ E), north-west China. The isolate was characterized using a polyphasic approach. The isolate formed abundant aerial mycelium with few branches and vegetative mycelium, occasionally twisted and coiled; spherical sporangia containing one to several spherical spores developed at the ends of short sporangiophores on aerial mycelium. The G+C content of the DNA was 65.2 mol%. The isolate contained meso-diaminopimelic acid as the diagnostic diamino acid and xylose, galactose and ribose as the major whole-cell sugars. The diagnostic phospholipids were phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylcholine and phosphatidylglycerol. The predominant menaquinones were MK-9(H4), MK-9(H6) and MK-9(H10). The major fatty acids were iso-C16 : 0 and anteiso-C17 : 0. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences indicated that strain TRM 46004T formed a distinct lineage within the family Pseudonocardiaceae and showed 91.7–96.1 % 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity with members of the family Pseudonocardiaceae . On the basis of the evidence from this polyphasic study, a novel genus and species, Longimycelium tulufanense gen. nov., sp. nov., are proposed. The type strain of Longimycelium tulufanense is TRM 46004T ( = CGMCC 4.5737T = NBRC 107726T).

A Gram-stain-positive, aerobic, non-motile, non-spore-forming and coccus-shaped strain, designated strain G463T, was isolated from the rhizosphere soil of Salicornia europaea L. collected from Lake Gudzhirganskoe in Siberia. Based on 16S rRNA gene phylogeny, strain G463T belonged to the genus Hoyosella , with the highest 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity to Hoyosella altamirensis DSM 45258T (96.1%). The major fatty acids were C17:1 ω8c, C16:0, C15 : 0 and C17:0. The strain contained meso-diaminopimelic acid as the cell-wall diagnostic diamino acid and arabinose, galactose and ribose as the whole-cell sugars. MK-8 and MK-7 were the predominant menaquinones. The polar lipid profile comprised diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylinositol, one unidentified phosphoglycolipid, two unidentified glycolipids and several unidentified lipids. Acetyl was the muramyl residue. Mycolic acids (C28–C34) were present. The G+C content of the genomic DNA was 68.3 mol%. Based on its phylogenetic, phenotypic and chemotaxonomic features, strain G463T was considered to represent a novel species of the genus Hoyosella , for which the name Hoyosella lacisalsi sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is G463T (=JCM 33650T=CGMCC 1.17230T).

A Gram-negative, non-spore-forming, yellow-pigmented bacterium, strain N4T, was isolated from a nickel-complexed cyanide-degrading bioreactor and subjected to a polyphasic taxonomic study. Phylogenetic analyses based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain N4T is affiliated to the genus Chryseobacterium of the family Flavobacteriaceae. The levels of 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity between strain N4T and the type strains of all known Chryseobacterium species were 93.2–95.8 %, suggesting that strain N4T represents a novel species within the genus Chryseobacterium. The strain contained iso-C15 : 0 and summed feature 4 as the major fatty acids and menaquinone MK-6 as the predominant respiratory quinone. The G+C content of the genomic DNA was 38.2 mol%. On the basis of its phenotypic properties and phylogenetic distinctiveness, strain N4T represents a novel species of the genus Chryseobacterium, for which the name Chryseobacterium caeni sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is N4T (=KCTC 12506T=CCBAU 10201T=DSM 17710T).

A Gram-staining-negative, non-flagellated, non-gliding and rod-shaped bacterial strain, designated HWR-17T, was isolated from seawater of the Yellow Sea in Korea. Strain HWR-17T grew optimally at pH 7.0–8.0, at 30 °C and in the presence of 2 % (w/v) NaCl. Phylogenetic analyses based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain HWR-17T clustered with the two Mariniflexile species in the family Flavobacteriaceae, exhibiting 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity of 97.1–97.2 % to their type strains and less than 95.7 % sequence similarity to other members of the family Flavobacteriaceae. Strain HWR-17T contained MK-6 as the predominant menaquinone and iso-C15 : 0 as the major fatty acid. The polar lipid profile of strain HWR-17T contained phosphatidylethanolamine, an unidentified aminolipid and four unidentified lipids. The DNA G+C content of strain HWR-17T was 35.7 mol% and it exhibited 11 and 10 % DNA–DNA relatedness, respectively, with Mariniflexile gromovii KCTC 12570T and Mariniflexile fucanivorans DSM 18792T. The phylogenetic and genetic distinctiveness and differential phenotypic properties revealed that strain HWR-17T is distinguishable from the two recognized Mariniflexile species. On the basis of the data presented, strain HWR-17T is considered to represent a novel species of the genus Mariniflexile, for which the name Mariniflexile aquimaris sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is HWR-17T ( = KCTC 23346T  = CCUG 60529T). An emended description of the genus Mariniflexile is also proposed.

A Gram-negative, yellow-pigmented bacterium, designated strain R2A-16T, was isolated from sediment of Rupa Lake in Nepal and analysed using a polyphasic taxonomic approach. Phylogenetic analyses based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain R2A-16T is affiliated to the genus Cloacibacterium of the family Flavobacteriaceae; 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity between strain R2A-16T and Cloacibacterium normanense CCUG 46293T was 98.07 %. The isolate contained iso-C15 : 0 (35.6 %) as the major fatty acid and menaquinone MK-6 as the predominant respiratory quinone. The G+C content of the genomic DNA was 33.3 mol%. On the basis of its phenotypic properties and phylogenetic distinctiveness, strain R2A-16T represents a novel species of the genus Cloacibacterium, for which the name Cloacibacterium rupense sp. nov. is proposed; the type strain is R2A-16T (=CGMCC 1.7656T =NBRC 104931T).

A motile, Gram-negative, rod-shaped bacterium, designated strain JS11-7T, was isolated from forest soil from Halla Mountain, Jeju Island, Korea. It grew optimally at 28 °C, pH 6–7 and in the presence of 0–2 % (w/v) NaCl. Phylogenetic analyses based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain JS11-7T belongs to the family Neisseriaceae, with Silvimonas terrae as its closest relative (95.0 % similarity). It contained Q-8 as the predominant quinone and summed feature 3 (comprising iso-C15 : 0 2-OH and/or C16 : 1 ω6c), C16 : 0 and C18 : 1 ω7c as the major fatty acids. The DNA G+C content was 62 mol%. On the basis of phenotypic and genotypic characteristics and the results of 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis, strain JS11-7T represents a novel genus and species, for which the name Andreprevotia chitinilytica gen. nov., sp. nov. is proposed. The type species is Andreprevotia chitinilytica and the type strain is JS11-7T (=KACC 11608T=DSM 18519T).

A Gram-positive, non-motile, rod-shaped actinomycete strain, designated SSW1-57T, was isolated from a dried seaweed sample from the coast of Jeju Island, Republic of Korea and subjected to a polyphasic taxonomic study. A neighbour-joining tree based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that the organism was related to members of the family Nocardioidaceae and formed a separate branch at the base of a taxon encompassing members of the genus Aeromicrobium, whereas it occupied an intermediate position between Aeromicrobium alkaliterrae–Aeromicrobium marinum and Aeromicrobium erythreum–Aeromicrobium fastidiosum clusters in maximum-parsimony and maximum-likelihood trees. The phylogenetic association of the isolate with the genus Aeromicrobium was supported by the following chemotaxonomic properties: ll-diaminopimelic acid in the peptidoglycan, MK-9(H4) as the major menaquinone and major fatty acids cis-9-octadecenoic acid, hexadecanoic acid, 10-methyl octadecanoic acid and 2-hydroxy hexadecanoic acid. The polar lipid profile contained phosphatidylinositol, diphosphatidylglycerol and phosphatidylglycerol. Levels of 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity between the novel organism and the type strains of the four recognized Aeromicrobium species were in the range 96.5–96.7 %. On the basis of phylogenetic analyses and phenotypic data, it is proposed that the organism should be classified as representing a novel species of the genus Aeromicrobium, with the name Aeromicrobium tamlense sp. nov. The type strain is SSW1-57T (=JCM 13811T=NRRL B-24466T).

A Gram-positive, non-motile and rod- or coccoid-shaped bacterial strain, MDN22T, was isolated from a soil sample from Korea. Strain MDN22T grew optimally at pH 7.0–8.0, at 30 °C and in the presence of 0–0.5 % (w/v) NaCl. Phylogenetic analyses based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain MDN22T was phylogenetically most closely related to the genera Nocardioides and Marmoricola. In the neighbour-joining phylogenetic tree, strain MDN22T was most closely related to Nocardioides jensenii KCTC 9134T, with which it exhibited 98.3 % 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity. The strain exhibited 93.1–96.9 % and 95.3–95.9 % 16S rRNA gene sequence similarities to the type strains of other species of the genera Nocardioides and Marmoricola, respectively. The chemotaxonomic properties of strain MDN22T were consistent with those of the genus Nocardioides; the cell-wall peptidoglycan type was based on ll-2,6-diaminopimelic acid, the predominant menaquinone was MK-8(H4) and the major fatty acids were iso-C16 : 0 and C17 : 1. The DNA G+C content was 68.7 mol%. DNA–DNA relatedness data and differential phenotypic properties suggested that strain MDN22T could be differentiated from N. jensenii and Nocardioides dubius. On the basis of the data obtained, strain MDN22T is considered to represent a novel species of the genus Nocardioides, for which the name Nocardioides daedukensis sp. nov., is proposed. The type strain is MDN22T (=KCTC 19601T=CCUG 57505T).
