A motile, rod-shaped bacterium, designated strain WPCB189T, was isolated from fresh water collected from the Woopo wetland (Republic of Korea). The cells were found to be Gram-negative, aerobic and catalase- and oxidase-positive. A phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that this isolate forms a lineage within the genus Pedobacter, showing sequence similarities of 89.7–96.4 % with respect to recognized species of the genus, and represents a novel member of this genus. The major fatty acids were iso-C15 : 0 2-OH and/or C16 : 1 ω7c (summed feature 3, 29.7 %), iso-C15 : 0 (26.4 %) and iso-C17 : 1 3-OH (10.1 %). The DNA G+C content was 38.0 mol%. On the basis of data obtained from this polyphasic taxonomic study, strain WPCB189T represents a novel species of the genus Pedobacter, for which the name Pedobacter koreensis sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is WPCB189T (=KCTC 12536T=NBRC 101153T).

A Gram-negative, non-motile, rod-shaped bacterial strain, designated CW-E 2T, was isolated from a polluted soil sample collected from Jiangsu Province, China. A taxonomic study of the isolate, including phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences and phenotypic characteristics, was carried out. The predominant menaquinone was MK-6 and the major fatty acids were i-C15 : 0, i-C17 : 0 3-OH, i-C17 : 1 ω9c and summed feature 4. The G+C content of the DNA was 37.2 mol%. Based on phenotypic and genotypic characteristics, strain CW-E 2T represents a novel species of the genus Chryseobacterium for which the name Chryseobacterium flavum sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is CW-E 2T (=KCTC 12877T=CCTCC AB 206147T).

A novel strain, designated 311-10T, isolated from soil of Xinjiang, China, was characterized by using a polyphasic taxonomic approach. The isolate was Gram-negative, aerobic, rod-shaped, non-motile, oxidase-negative and catalase-positive. The predominant menaquinone of strain 311-10T was MK-7 and the genomic DNA G+C content was 47.8 mol%. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences indicated that the isolate formed a cluster with the genera Pontibacter and [Effluviibacter] in the phylum ‘Bacteroidetes’, with sequence similarities of 93.9–95.6 %. Phylogenetic evidence and the results of phenotypic, genotypic and chemotaxonomic analyses support the reclassification of [Effluviibacter] roseus as Pontibacter roseus comb. nov. (type strain, SRC-1T=MTCC 7260T=DSM 17521T) and the establishment of a novel species, Pontibacter xinjiangensis sp. nov., with strain 311-10T (=CCTCC AB 207200T=NRRL B-51335T) as the type strain.

An orange-pigmented bacterium, designated strain 13-9-B8T, was isolated from a seawater sample collected at Marado, Jeju Island, South Korea. The novel strain was Gram-staining-negative, non-motile, non-gliding, rod-shaped and aerobic. A phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences revealed that the strain clustered with members of the genus Lewinella of the family Saprospiraceae in the phylum Bacteroidetes and was most closely related to the species Lewinella marina (95.6 % similarity to the type strain). Strain 13-9-B8T grew optimally at 30 °C, pH 7.0 and with 2 % (w/v) NaCl. Strain 13-9-B8T contained MK-7 as the predominant menquinone and summed feature 3, iso-C15 : 0 and iso-C17 : 0 3-OH as the major fatty acids. The polar lipids detected in strain 13-9-B8T were phosphatidylethanolamine, one unidentified aminolipid, one unidentified phospholipid and eight unidentified lipids. The DNA G+C content of strain 13-9-B8T was 59.1 mol%. Based on phenotypic, chemotaxonomic and phylogenetic data presented, strain 13-9-B8T is considered to represent a novel species of the genus Lewinella, for which the name Lewinella xylanilytica sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is 13-9-B8T ( = DSM 29526T = KCTC 32663T).

A novel facultatively methylotrophic, Gram-negative, rod-shaped bacterium, designated strain S2R03-9T, was isolated from jeotgal, a traditional Korean fermented seafood. The organism was strictly aerobic, motile by means of a single polar flagellum, non-sporulating and catalase- and oxidase-positive. Strain S2R03-9T grew in the presence of 0–1 % (w/v) NaCl and at pH 6.0–10.0, with optimum growth in the absence of NaCl and at pH 7.0. It grew at temperatures in the range 20.0–30.0 °C, with optimum growth at 30 °C. Colonies grown on R2A medium were non-pigmented, opaque and creamy white. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences indicated that it was most closely related to Methylobacterium organophilum JCM 2833T (96.6 % similarity) and the phylogenetic similarities to all other Methylobacterium species with validly published names were less than 95.0 %. The DNA G+C content was 64.9 mol%. The phylogenetic analysis, the phenotypic assessment and the chemotaxonomic data (major ubiquinone, Q-10; major fatty acids, C18 : 1 and C18 : 0) showed that S2R03-9T represents a novel species within the genus Methylobacterium in the class Alphaproteobacteria, for which the name Methylobacterium jeotgali sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is S2R03-9T (=KCTC 12671T=LMG 23639T).

A sponge-associated strain, KMM 7019T, was investigated in a polyphasic taxonomic study. The bacterium was strictly aerobic, heterotrophic, Gram-negative, yellow-pigmented, motile by gliding and oxidase-, catalase-, β-galactosidase- and alkaline phosphatase-positive. A phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences revealed that strain KMM 7019T is closely related to members of the genus Salegentibacter, namely Salegentibacter holothuriorum, Salegentibacter mishustinae and Salegentibacter salegens (97·7–98 % sequence similarities). The DNA–DNA relatedness between the strain studied and Salegentibacter species ranged from 27 to 31 %, clearly demonstrating that KMM 7019T belongs to a novel species of the genus Salegentibacter, for which the name Salegentibacter agarivorans sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is KMM 7019T (=KCTC 12560T=LMG 23205T).

A Gram-negative, non-motile, rod-shaped bacterial strain, JLT354-WT, that accumulates poly-β-hydroxybutyrate granules was isolated from the South China Sea. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that the strain was related to members of the genera Antarctobacter, Sagittula, Oceanicola and Loktanella; levels of similarity between strain JLT354-WT and members of the above genera were less than 92.0 %. The predominant fatty acid of strain JLT354-WT was C18 : 1 ω7c (83.1 %); significant amounts of C18 : 0 (7.9 %) and C12 : 1 3-OH (3.7 %) were also present. The predominant respiratory ubiquinone was Q-10. The DNA G+C content of strain JLT354-WT was 63.7 mol%. The isolate was distinguishable from members of the order Rhodobacterales based on phenotypic and biochemical characteristics. On the basis of the taxonomic data presented, strain JLT354-WT is considered to represent a novel species of a new genus, for which the name Mameliella alba gen. nov., sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain of Mameliella alba is JLT354-WT (=LMG 24665T=CGMCC 1.7290T).

A Gram-negative, non-motile, rod-shaped bacterium, designated strain AKS 1T, was isolated from a desert soil sample collected from Akesu, XinJiang Province, China. A taxonomic study, including phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences and phenotypic characteristics, was performed on the novel isolate. The predominant menaquinone of strain AKS 1T was MK-7. The major fatty acids included i-C15 : 0, ai-C17 : 1 B/i-C17 : 1 I and i-C17 : 0 3-OH. The G+C content of the DNA was 51.4 mol%. Based on the results of phenotypic and genotypic characteristics, strain AKS 1T should be assigned as representing a novel species of the genus Pontibacter, for which the name Pontibacter akesuensis is proposed. The type strain is AKS 1T (=KCTC 12758T=CCTCC AB 206086T).

A Gram-negative, yellow-pigmented bacterium capable of gliding motility, designated strain WPCB118T, was isolated from fresh water collected from the Woopo wetland (Republic of Korea). Cells were rod-shaped and sometimes filamentous. The major fatty acids were iso-C15 : 0 2-OH and/or C16 : 1 ω7c (45.6 %), C16 : 1 ω5c (18.5 %), iso-C15 : 0 (9.5 %) and C16 : 0 (8.8 %). The predominant menaquinone and polar lipid were MK-7 and phosphatidylethanolamine, respectively. The DNA G+C content was 53.3 mol%. A phylogenetic tree based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain WPCB118T had an evolutionary lineage within the radiation encompassing the members of the family ‘Flexibacteraceae’, its closest neighbour being Spirosoma linguale LMG 10896T (93.7 % gene sequence similarity). Data from this polyphasic study indicated that strain WPCB118T could not be assigned to any recognized species. Strain WPCB118T represents a novel species of the genus Spirosoma, for which the name Spirosoma rigui sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is WPCB118T (=KCTC 12531T=NBRC 101117T).

A Gram-staining-negative, non-gliding, orange-pigmented bacterial strain, designated HMF2925T, was isolated from fresh water in Korea. The phylogenetic tree based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain HMF2925T formed a distinct lineage within the genus Emticicia. Strain HMF2925T was closely related to Emticicia oligotrophica DSM 17448T (95.5 %) and Emticicia ginsengisoli Gsoil 085T (94.1 %). The major fatty acids of strain HMF2925T were summed feature 3 (C16 : 1ω6c and/or C16 : 1ω7c), iso-C15 : 0, C16 : 1ω5c and C16 : 0.The major polar lipids of strain HMF2925T were phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylinositol, diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol, an unidentified glycolipid, two unidentified amino lipids and three unidentified polar lipids. The DNA G+C content of strain HMF2925T was 36.5 mol%. On the basis of the evidence presented in this study, strain HMF2925T represents a novel species of the genus Emticicia, for which the name Emticicia aquatica sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is HMF2925T ( = KCTC 42574T = CECT 8858T).

Three novel endophytic strains, designated 17B10-2-12T, 26C10-4-4 and D13-10-4-9, were isolated from the bark of Populus euramericana in Heze, Shandong Province, China. They were Gram-reaction-negative, aerobic, non-motile, short-rod-shaped, oxidase-positive and catalase-negative. A phylogenetic analysis of the 16S rRNA gene showed that the three novel strains clustered with members of the family Comamonadaceae and formed a distinct branch. The isolates shared 100 % similarities among themselves and had the highest sequence similarity with Xenophilus azovorans DSM 13620T (95.2 %) and Xenophilus arseniciresistens YW8T (95.0 %), and less than 95.0 % sequence similarities with members of other species. Their major fatty acids were C16 : 0, C17 : 0 cyclo, C18 : 1ω7c and C16 : 1ω7c/C16 : 1ω6c. The major polar lipids were diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine and three unknown aminophospholipids. The predominant quinone was ubiquinone-8 (Q-8). The DNA G+C content was 69.5–70.0 mol%. Based on data from a polyphasic taxonomy study, the three strains represent a novel species of a novel genus of the family Comamonadaceae, for which the name Corticibacter populi gen. nov., sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is 17B10-2-12T ( = CFCC 12099T = KCTC 42091T).
