A dark-pink-coloured bacterial strain, B4Y-8T, was isolated from a soil cultivated with ginseng. The 16S rRNA gene sequence of this strain showed highest similarity with Mucilaginibacter litoreus BR-18T (96.8 %), Mucilaginibacter lutimaris BR-3T (96.6 %) and Mucilaginibacter defluvii A5T (96.2 %) among the type strains of species of the genus Mucilaginibacter. Strain B4Y-8T was a strictly aerobic, Gram-stain-negative, non-motile, short-rod-shaped bacterium producing a large amount of extracellular polymeric substance. The strain grew at 10–35 °C (optimum, 25 °C), at pH 3.0–11.0 (optimum, pH 7.0) and in the presence of 0–1 % (w/v) NaCl (optimum, 0 %). The DNA G+C content of strain B4Y-8T was 49.0 mol%. It contained menaquinone 7 (MK-7) as the major isoprenoid quinone, and summed feature 3 (C16 : 1ω6c and/or C16 : 1ω7c) and iso-C15 : 0 as the major fatty acids. On the basis of evidence from the present polyphasic taxonomic study, strain B4Y-8T should be classified as representing a novel species of the genus Mucilaginibacter, for which the name Mucilaginibacter ginsengisoli sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is B4Y-8T ( = KACC 18152T = JCM 30759T).

A Gram-stain-positive, endospore-forming, rod-shaped bacterium, designated XJ259T, was isolated from a cold spring sample from Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region, China. The isolate grew optimally at 20–30 °C and pH 7.3–7.8. Comparative analysis of the 16S rRNA gene sequence showed that isolate XJ259T belonged phylogenetically to the genus Paenibacillus, and was most closely related to Paenibacillus xinjiangensis B538T (with 96.6 % sequence similarity), Paenibacillus glycanilyticus DS-1T (96.3 %) and Paenibacillus castaneae Ch-32T (96.1 %), sharing less than 96.0 % sequence similarity with all other members of the genus Paenibacillus. Chemotaxonomic analysis revealing menaquinone-7 (MK-7) as the major isoprenoid quinone, diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine and two unknown phosphoglycolipids as the major cellular polar lipids, a DNA G+C content of 47.0 mol%, and anteiso-C15 : 0 and C16 : 0 as the major fatty acids supported affiliation of the new isolate to the genus Paenibacillus. Based on these data, isolate XJ259T is considered to represent a novel species of the genus Paenibacillus, for which the name Paenibacillus algorifonticola sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is XJ259T ( = CGMCC 1.10223T  = JCM 16598T).

A Gram-stain-negative, yellow-pigmented bacterial strain, designated PR1012KT, was isolated from a motor car evaporator core collected in Korea. Cells of the strain were facultatively anaerobic, non-spore-forming and rod-shaped. The strain grew at 10–40 °C (optimum, 25 °C), at pH 6.5–8.0 (optimum, pH 7.0–8.0) and in the presence of 0–1 % (w/v) NaCl. Phylogenetically, the strain was closely related to members of the genus Spirosoma (97.50–90.74 % 16S rRNA gene sequence similarities) and showed highest sequence similarity to Spirosoma panaciterrae DSM 21099T (97.50 %). Its predominant fatty acids included summed feature 3 (C16 : 1ω7c and/or C16 : 1ω6c), C16 : 1ω5c, iso-C15 : 0 and summed feature 4 (iso-C17 : 1 I and/or anteiso B) and it had MK-7 as the major menaquinone. The polar lipids present included phosphatidylethanolamine, one unknown aminophospholipid, two unknown aminolipids and five unknown polar lipids. The DNA G+C content of this strain was 54 mol%. Based on phenotypic, genotypic and chemotaxonomic data, strain PR1012KT represents a novel species in the genus Spirosoma, for which the name Spirosoma aerolatum sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is PR1012KT ( = KACC 17939T = NBRC 110794T).

A Gram-negative, rod-shaped bacterial strain, designated K19414T, was isolated from a chironomid (Diptera; Chironomidae) egg mass which was sampled from Kishon River in northern Israel. Phylogenetic analysis based on the 16S rRNA gene sequence positioned the novel strain among the genus Rheinheimera, with closest similarity to Rheinheimera pacifica KMM 1406T. The levels of similarity to type strains of Rheinheimera species were lower than 96.5 %. Isolate K19414T is aerobic, motile by means of a single polar flagellum, catalase-negative and oxidase-positive; growth was observed at salinities of 0–2 % NaCl and the temperature for growth ranged from 4 to 40 °C. The major cellular fatty acids are 16 : 0 (14.8 %) and 16 : 1ω7c and/or 15 : 0 iso 2-OH (25.76 %). The DNA G+C content is 49.9 mol%. On the basis of its phenotypic properties and phylogenetic distinctiveness, strain K19414T (=LMG 23818T =DSM 18694T) was classified in the genus Rheinheimera as the type strain of a novel species, for which the name Rheinheimera chironomi sp. nov. is proposed.

A halotolerant, facultatively alkaliphilic bacterium, designated CL-MP28T, was isolated from the surface of a sediment core sample collected at a depth of 2247 m in the Ulleung Basin of the East Sea, Korea. Phylogenetic analysis of the 16S rRNA gene sequence of strain CL-MP28T revealed an affiliation with the genus Oceanobacillus. The sequence similarities between the isolate and type strains of members of the genus Oceanobacillus were in the range 95.0–96.0 %, indicating that strain CL-MP28T represented a novel species within the genus. The strain was found to be Gram-positive, rod-shaped and motile by means of peritrichous flagella and was shown to produce ellipsoidal spores. The strain was strictly aerobic and able to grow with NaCl at concentrations in the range 0–14 % (w/v) at pH 7.5. The strain grew at temperatures of 15–42 °C and at pH 6.5–9.5. The major fatty acids were anteiso-C15 : 0 (64.9 %), anteiso-C17 : 0 (11.9 %) and iso-C16 : 0 (7.7 %). The major isoprenoid quinone was MK-7. The DNA G+C content was 40.2 mol%. According to the 16S rRNA gene sequence, DNA–DNA relatedness and physiological data and the fatty acid composition, CL-MP28T could be assigned to the genus Oceanobacillus, but is distinguishable from the recognized species of this genus. Strain CL-MP28T therefore represents a novel species within the genus Oceanobacillus, for which the name Oceanobacillus profundus sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is CL-MP28T (=KCCM 42318T=DSM 18246T).

A novel yellow-pigmented, agarolytic bacterial strain, designated ZC1T, was isolated from the surface of the marine red alga Porphyra haitanensis collected near Nan Ao Island, Guangdong province, China. The isolate was Gram-stain-negative, strictly aerobic and rod-shaped and displayed β-galactosidase, alkaline phosphatase, catalase and oxidase activities. The predominant cellular fatty acids were iso-C15 : 0, summed feature 3 (comprising C16 : 1ω7c and/or iso-C15 : 0 2-OH) and iso-C17 : 0 3-OH. The major menaquinone was menaquinone 6 (MK-6). The DNA G+C content was 32.8 mol%. Phylogenetic analysis of the 16S rRNA gene sequence revealed that strain ZC1T was closely related to members of the genus Aquimarina in the family Flavobacteriaceae , phylum Bacteroidetes . Based on phylogenetic and phenotypic evidence, strain ZC1T ( = CCTCC AB 2010229T  = NBRC 107695T) represents the type strain of a novel species in the genus Aquimarina , for which the name Aquimarina agarilytica sp. nov. is proposed.

A polyphasic study was undertaken to establish the taxonomic status of a Gram-positive, aerobic actinomycete, strain HPA177T, isolated from a marine sponge, Hymeniacidon perleve. The organism formed branching, non-fragmenting vegetative hyphae and produced black pigment. Chemotaxonomic characteristics were consistent with its assignment to the genus Actinoalloteichus. Analysis of the 16S rRNA gene sequence showed that strain HPA177T formed a robust clade with type strains of the genus Actinoalloteichus, but was distinct from them. A number of phenotypic characteristics also readily distinguished strain HPA177T from species of the genus Actinoalloteichus with validly published names. On the basis of the above data, it is proposed that strain HPA177T represents a novel species, Actinoalloteichus hymeniacidonis sp. nov. The type strain of Actinoalloteichus hymeniacidonis is HPA177T (=CGMCC 4.2500T=JCM 13436T).

Three Gram-stain-positive strains were isolated from fermented mustard and were rod-shaped, non-motile, asporogenous, facultatively anaerobic, homofermentative and did not exhibit catalase activity. Comparative analyses of 16S rRNA, pheS and rpoA gene sequences demonstrated that the novel strains were members of the genus Lactobacillus. On the basis of 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis, the type strains of Lactobacillus crustorum (98.7 % similarity), Lactobacillus farciminis (98.9 %) and Lactobacillus mindensis (97.9 %) were the closest neighbours. However, DNA–DNA reassociation values with these strains were less than 50 %. Phenotypic and genotypic features demonstrated that these isolates represent a novel species of the genus Lactobacillus, for which the name Lactobacillus futsaii sp. nov. is proposed; the type strain is YM 0097T ( = JCM 17355T = BCRC 80278T).

A Gram-negative, non-motile, coccobacilli-shaped bacterium, DS-48T, was isolated from soil from Dokdo, Korea, and its taxonomic position was investigated by means of a polyphasic study. Strain DS-48T grew optimally at 25 °C and pH 7.0–8.0 in the presence of 0.5 % (w/v) NaCl. It contained Q-10 as the predominant ubiquinone and C18 : 1 ω7c and C18 : 1 2-OH as the major fatty acids. The DNA G+C content was 69.3 mol%. A phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain DS-48T fell within the genus Roseomonas, clustering with Roseomonas lacus TH-G33T (at a bootstrap confidence level of 100 %). The levels of similarity between the 16S rRNA gene sequence of strain DS-48T and those of the type strains of recognized Roseomonas species were in the range 93.2–98.0 %. DNA–DNA relatedness data and differential phenotypic properties, together with the phylogenetic distinctiveness of DS-48T, revealed that this strain differs from recognized Roseomonas species. On the basis of phenotypic, phylogenetic and genetic data, therefore, strain DS-48T represents a novel species within the genus Roseomonas, for which the name Roseomonas terrae sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is DS-48T (=KCTC 12874T=JCM 14592T).

In the early 1980s, a facultatively anaerobic, non-motile, short rod, designated 202T, was isolated from a chicken crop and identified as a homofermentative lactic acid bacterium. Phylogenetic analysis based on the 16S rRNA gene sequence revealed that the strain was affiliated with the genus Lactobacillus, clustering within the Lactobacillus acidophilus–delbrueckii group. In this analysis, strain 202T appeared to be most closely related to the type strains of Lactobacillus intestinalis and Lactobacillus amylolyticus, with gene sequence similarities of 96.1 and 96.2 %, respectively. Strain 202T was found to differ from these two species, however, when investigated by multilocus sequence analysis, and it also differed in terms of some of its metabolic properties. On the basis of these observations, strain 202T is considered to represent a novel species in the genus Lactobacillus, for which the name Lactobacillus gigeriorum sp. nov. is proposed; the type strain is 202T ( = CRBIP 24.85T = DSM 23908T).

A thermophilic, anaerobic, chemolithoautotrophic bacterium, designated strain TB-2T, was isolated from the walls of an active deep-sea hydrothermal vent chimney on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge at 36° 14′ N 33° 54′ W. The cells were Gram-negative rods approximately 1·5 μm in length and 0·75 μm in width. Strain TB-2T grew between 45 and 70 °C (optimum 55 °C), 10 and 40 g NaCl l−1 (optimum 30 g l−1) and pH 4·5 and 7·5 (optimum pH 5·5). Generation time under optimal conditions was 50 min. Growth occurred under chemolithoautotrophic conditions with H2 as the energy source and CO2 as the carbon source. Nitrate or sulfur was used as the electron acceptor, with resulting production of ammonium and hydrogen sulfide, respectively. Oxygen, thiosulfate, sulfite, selenate and arsenate were not used as electron acceptors. Growth was inhibited by the presence of acetate, lactate, formate and peptone. The G+C content of the genomic DNA was 25·6 mol%. Phylogenetic analysis of the 16S rRNA gene sequence indicated that this organism is closely related to Caminibacter hydrogeniphilus and Caminibacter profundus (95·9 and 96·3 % similarity, respectively). On the basis of phylogenetic, physiological and genetic considerations, it is proposed that the organism represents a novel species within the genus Caminibacter, Caminibacter mediatlanticus sp. nov. The type strain is TB-2T (=DSM 16658T=JCM 12641T).
