A coccobacilli-shaped proteobacterium, designated strain SYSU XM001T, was isolated from an activated sludge sample collected from JiMei sewage treatment plant, Xiamen, PR China. Cells were Gram-stain-negative, catalase-positive and oxidase-negative. The 16S rRNA gene sequence of strain SYSU XM001T shared less than 92 % sequence identities with members of the class Alphaproteobacteria , with highest sequence similarity to Aquidulcibacter paucihalophilus TH1-2T (91.6 %; family Hyphomonadaceae , order Rhodobacterales ). The strain exhibited growth at 25–37 °C, pH 7.0–9.0 and in the presence of up to 1 % (w/v) NaCl. Its chemotaxonomic features included ubiquinone-10 as the respiratory isoprenologue, iso-C16 : 0, 10-methyl C16 : 0 TSBA and anteiso-C17 : 0 as major cellular fatty acids and monoglycosyldiglyceride, glucuronopyranosyldiglyceride and two unidentified glycolipids as the main polar lipids. The DNA G+C content was determined to be 62.9 % (draft genome). Analyses of the phylogenetic data and differences in the chemotaxonomic and biochemical features from related genera in the family Hyphomonadaceae indicated that strain SYSU XM001T merits representation of a novel species of a novel genus, for which the name Vitreimonas flagellata gen. nov., sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain of Vitreimonas flagellata is SYSU XM001T (=CGMCC 1.16661T=KCTC 62915T).

A Gram-stain-negative, aerobic and rod-shaped novel bacterial strain, designated MAH-26T, was isolated from rhizospheric soil of a pine tree. The colonies were orange coloured, smooth, spherical and 0.7–1.8 mm in diameter when grown on Reasoner's 2A (R2A) agar for 2 days. Strain MAH-26T was able to grow at 10–40 °C, at pH 6.0–9.0 and with 0–1.0 % NaCl. Cell growth occurred on nutrient agar, R2A agar, tryptone soya agar and Luria–Bertani agar. The strain gave positive results in oxidase and catalase tests. Strain MAH-26T was closely related to Flavihumibacter sediminis CJ663T and Parasegetibacter terrae SGM2-10T with a low 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity (92.8 and 92.9 %, respectively) and phylogenetic analysis indicated that the strain formed a distinct phylogenetic lineage from the members of the closely related genera of the family Chitinophagaceae . Strain MAH-26T has a draft genome size of 6 857 405 bp, annotated with 5173 protein-coding genes, 50 tRNA and two rRNA genes. The genomic DNA G+C content was 41.5 mol%. The predominant isoprenoid quinone was menaquinone 7. The major fatty acids were identified as iso-C15:0, iso-C15:1 G and iso-C17:0 3OH. On the basis of phylogenetic inference and phenotypic, chemotaxonomic and molecular properties, strain MAH-26T represents a novel species of a novel genus of the family Chitinophagaceae , for which the name Pinibacter aurantiacus gen. nov., sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain of Pinibacter aurantiacus is MAH-26T (=KACC 19749T=CGMCC 1.13701T).

A Gram-stain-negative, motile bacterium, designated strain YE3T, was isolated from activated sludge obtained from a municipal wastewater treatment plant in Daejeon Metropolitan City, Republic of Korea. The cells were oxidase- and catalase-positive, and grew under aerobic conditions at 10–40 °C (optimum, 30 °C), with 1.0–8.0 % (w/v) NaCl (1.0 %) and at pH 5.5–9.0 (pH 7.0). Phylogenetic analysis based on the 16S rRNA gene sequence indicated that strain YE3T was most closely related to Pusillimonas harenae KACC 14927T (98.2 % sequence similarity) and Pusillimonas ginsengisoli KCTC 22046T (98.0 %). DNA–DNA relatedness values for strain YE3T and P. harenae KACC 14927T, P. ginsengisoli KCTC 22046T and P. soli KCTC 22455T were 28.7±2.27 %, 21.3±1.16 %, and 14.0±0.67 %, respectively. The genomic G+C content of the type strain YE3T was 59.3 mol%, as determined by whole-genome sequencing. The dominant fatty acids were C16 : 0 (39.2 %) and C17 : 0cyclo (37.5 %). The major polar lipids of strain YE3T were diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol and phosphatidylethanolamine. Two aminophospholipids and four unidentified lipids were also detected. Furthermore, strain YE3T was able to oxidize thiosulfate under heterotrophic conditions. Based on the phenotypic, genotypic, chemotaxonomic and phylogenetic analyses, strain YE3T represents a novel species of the genus Pusillimonas , for which the name Pusillimonas thiosulfatoxidans sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is YE3T (=KCTC 62737T=NBRC 113113T).

A Gram-stain-negative, fusiform-shaped, facultatively anaerobic bacterial strain, designated EBTL04T, was isolated from activated sludge using algal metabolites and taxonomically characterized through polyphasic investigation. Phylogenetic analysis based on the 16S rRNA gene sequence showed that strain EBTL04T belongs to the family Verrucomicrobiaceae , class Verrucomicrobiae , and is closely related to Prosthecobacter dejongeii DSM 12251T (98.6 % sequence similarity), Prosthecobacter fusiformis ATCC 25309T (97.9 %), Prosthecobacter debontii DSM 14044T (97.5 %), Prosthecobacter vanneervenii DSM 12252T (94.7 %) and Prosthecobacter fluviatilis KCTC 22182T (93.7 %). The G+C content of the genomic DNA of strain EBTL04T was 62.7 mol%. The menaquinone MK-6 was detected as the predominant quinone. Strain EBTL04T contained phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylglycerol and phosphatidylserine as major polar lipids. A fatty acid profile with C16 : 1ω5c, iso-C14 : 0, C16 : 0, anteiso-C15 : 0 and C14 : 0 as the major components supported the classification of strain EBTL04T in the genus Prosthecobacter . Based on several phenotypic, genotypic and chemotaxonomic features, strain EBTL04T was clearly differentiated from its phylogenetic neighbours. Therefore, strain EBTL04T should be considered to represent a novel species of the genus Prosthecobacter , for which the name Prosthecobacter algae sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is EBTL04T ( = KCTC 23681T = JCM 18053T).

A Gram-staining-negative, rod-shaped and motile bacterium, designated strain ERB1-3T, was isolated from a laboratory-scale activated sludge system treating coke plant effluent using thiocyanate-supplemented growth medium. Strain ERB1-3T was oxidase-positive and weakly catalase-positive. The predominant fatty acids were C18 : 1ω7c (35.6 %) and C17 : 1ω6c (29.2 %), and the major respiratory quinone was Q-10. Polar lipids were dominated by sphingoglycolipid and phosphatidylglycerol. Major polyamines were spermidine and sym-homospermidine. The G+C content of the genomic DNA of strain ERB1-3T was 66.4 mol%. Based on the 16S rRNA gene, strain ERB1-3T exhibited the highest sequence similarity values to Sphingomonas sanxanigenens DSM 19645T (96.1 %), Sphingobium scionense DSM 19371T (95.1 %) and Stakelama pacifica LMG 24686T (94.8 %) within the family Sphingomonadaceae . The novel isolate had some unique chemotaxonomic features that differentiated it from these closely related strains, contained much more C17 : 1ω6c, C15 : 0 2-OH, C17 : 0 and C17 : 1ω8c fatty acids and possessed diphosphatidylglycerol only in trace amounts. On the basis of the phenotypic, chemotaxonomic and molecular data, strain ERB1-3T is considered to represent a novel genus and species, for which the name Hephaestia caeni gen. nov., sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is ERB1-3T ( = DSM 25527T = NCAIM B 02511T).

A Gram-stain-negative, aerobic, non-flagellated and filamentous-shaped bacterium, HX-16-21T, was isolated from activated sludge. Strain HX-16-21T was able to degrade gentisate, protocatechuic acid and p-hydroxybenzoic acid and herbicides quizalofop-p-ethyl and diclofop-methyl. The strain shared 97.2 % 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity to Niastella vici CCTCC AB 2015052T and less than 97 % similarities to other type strains. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences indicated that strain HX-16-21T belonged to the genus Niastella and formed a subclade with N. vici CCTCC AB 2015052T. The major polar lipids were phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylcholine and six unidentified lipids. The major fatty acids were iso-C15:0, iso-C15:1 G and iso-C17:0 3-OH. The predominant respiratory quinone was menaquinone 7 (MK-7). The draft genome of strain HX-16-21T was 8.1 Mb, and the G+C content was 43.5 mol%. The average nucleotide identity and digital DNA–DNA hybridization values between strain HX-16-21T and N. vici CCTCC AB 2015052T were 80.6 and 26.8 %, respectively. Based on both phenotypic and phylogenetic evidence, strain HX-16-21T is considered to represent a novel species in the genus Niastella , for which the name Niastella caeni sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is HX-16-21T (=KCTC 72288T=ACCC 61580T).

A Gram-stain-negative, aerobic, non-motile and rod-shaped bacterium, designated as IMCC34836T, was isolated from a freshwater stream. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences revealed that strain IMCC34836T was most closely related to Permianibacter aggregans HW001T (of the family Pseudomonadaceae ) with 95.6 % sequence similarity and formed a robust clade with P. aggregans HW001T. The draft genome sequence of strain IMCC34836T was 4.4 Mbp in size with 59.1 mol% DNA G+C content. Average nucleotide identity and digital DNA–DNA hybridization values between strain IMCC34836T and P. aggregans HW001T were 71.2 and 22.0 %, respectively, indicating that the new strain represents a novel species. The strain contained iso-C15 : 0, summed feature 3 (C16 : 1  ω6c and/or C16 : 1  ω7c) and summed feature 9 (iso-C17 : 1  ω9c and/or C16 : 1 10-methyl) as the major fatty acids and harboured phosphatidylethanolamine, two unidentified aminophospholipids and three unidentified lipids as major polar lipids. The isoprenoid quinone detected in the strain was ubiquinone-8. Based on the phylogenetic and phenotypic characteristics, strain IMCC34836T is considered to represent a novel species of the genus Permianibacter , for which the name Permianibacter fluminis sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is IMCC34836T (=KACC 21755T=NBRC 114416T).

A Gram-negative, rod-shaped, aerobic bacterial strain, designated EBTL01T, was isolated from activated sludge by using metabolites of microalgae Ankistrodesmus gracilis SAG278-2. Phylogenetic analyses based on 16S rRNA gene sequence showed that strain EBTL01T belongs to the family Verrucomicrobiaceae , class Verrucomicrobiae , and is related most closely to Luteolibacter pohnpeiensis A4T-83T (95.5 % sequence similarity) and Luteolibacter algae A5J-41-2T (95.2 %). The G+C content of the genomic DNA of strain EBTL01T was 56.3 mol% and the menaquinone MK-9 was detected as the predominant quinone. Major fatty acid components were iso-C14 : 0, C16 : 1ω7c and C16 : 0. The amino acids of the cell-wall peptidoglycan contained muramic acid and meso-diaminopimelic acid. These profile results supported the affiliation of strain EBTL01T to the genus Luteolibacter . On the other hand, based on chemotaxonomic properties and phenotypic characteristics, strain EBTL01T could be clearly differentiated from its phylogenetic neighbours. Therefore, strain EBTL01T represents a novel species of the genus Luteolibacter , for which the name Luteolibacter yonseiensis sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is EBTL01T ( = KCTC 23678T = JCM 18052T).

A Gram-stain-negative, oxidase-positive, catalase-positive, aerobic, orange-pigmented, rod-shaped and non-motile bacterium designated strain MMS17-SY002T was isolated from island soil. The isolate grew at 20–37 °C (optimum, 30 °C), at pH 6.0–9.5 (optimum, pH 7) and in the presence of 0.5–4.0 % (w/v) NaCl (optimum, 2.0 %). Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences revealed that strain MMS17-SY002T was mostly related to the genus Muriicola of the family Flavobacteriaceae and had highest sequence similarity of 96.82 % to Muriicola marianensis A6B8T and Muriicola jejuensis EM44T, but formed a distinct phylogenetic line within the genus. Chemotaxonomic analyses showed that menaquinone 6 was the predominant isoprenoid quinone, the major fatty acids were iso-C15 : 1 G and iso-C15 : 0, and the diagnostic polar lipid was phosphatidylethanolamine. The genomic DNA G+C content was 42.4 mol%. Strain MMS17-SY002T could be distinguished from related species by the combination of trypsin, α-chymotrypsin, acid phosphatase, naphthol-AS-BI-phosphohydrolase, α-galactosidase, β-galactosidase and β-glucosidase activities. The orthologous average nucleotide identity between the genomes of strain MMS17-SY002T and M. jejuensis and that between the strain and M. marianensis A6B8T were 73.26 and 73.33%, respectively, thus confirming the separation of the strain from related species at species level. Based on the phenotypic, phylogenetic, chemotaxonomic and genomic characterization, MMS17-SY002T should be recognized as a novel species of the genus Muriicola , for which the name Muriicola soli sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is MMS17-SY002T (=KCTC 62790T=JCM 32370T).

A Gram-staining-negative, non-flagellated, non-gliding and pleomorphic bacterial strain, designated DPG-25T, was isolated from seawater in a seaweed farm in the South Sea in Korea and its taxonomic position was investigated by using a polyphasic approach. Strain DPG-25T grew optimally at 25 °C, at pH 7.0–7.5 and in the presence of 2 % (w/v) NaCl. Flexirubin-type pigments were not produced. Phylogenetic analyses based on 16S rRNA gene sequences revealed that strain DPG-25T formed a cluster with the type strains of Actibacter sediminis , Aestuariicola saemankumensis and Lutimonas vermicola . Strain DPG-25T exhibited 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity values of 95.3, 93.1 and 93.6 % to the type strains of Actibacter sediminis , Aestuariicola saemankumensis and L. vermicola , respectively. Strain DPG-25T contained MK-6 as the predominant menaquinone and iso-C15 : 0 and iso-C17 : 0 3-OH as the major fatty acids. The major polar lipids detected in strain DPG-25T were phosphatidylethanolamine and one unidentified lipid. The DNA G+C content was 39.9 mol%. Differential phenotypic properties and the phylogenetic distinctiveness of strain DPG-25T demonstrated that this strain is distinguishable from Actibacter sediminis , Aestuariicola saemankumensis and L. vermicola . On the basis of the data presented here, strain DPG-25T represents a novel species in a novel genus of the family Flavobacteriaceae , for which the name Namhaeicola litoreus gen. nov., sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain of Namhaeicola litoreus is DPG-25T ( = KCTC 23702T  = CCUG 61485T).

An orange, rod-shaped, Gram-reaction-negative, aerobic and gliding bacterial strain devoid of flagella, designated strain KYW614T, was isolated from seawater collected from Gwangyang Bay, Republic of Korea. Zeaxanthin was the major carotenoid pigment produced and flexirubin-type pigments were not produced. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences indicated that strain KYW614T belonged to the family Flavobacteriaceae and it was most closely related to Mesoflavibacter zeaxanthinifaciens TD-ZX30T (96.5 %, sequence similarity). The predominant cellular fatty acids of strain KYW614T were iso-C15 : 1 G (10.5 %), summed feature 3 (C16 : 1ω7c/C16 : 1ω6c; 10.0 %), iso-C15 : 0 (9.5 %), C15 : 0 (7.5 %) and iso-C17 : 0 3-OH (7.4 %). MK-6 was the only isoprenoid quinone and the DNA G+C content was 32.6 mol%. Data from a polyphasic taxonomic study suggested that the isolate represents a novel species in the genus Mesoflavibacter , for which the name Mesoflavibacter aestuarii sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is KYW614T ( = KCTC 32269T = JCM 19524T).
