Within the framwork of the effective mass approximation, the electronic structures of quantum dots in the presence of electric field are investigated by the finite element method. Numerical calculation results show that, with finite confining potential, the highest electronic bound state in the quantum dots gradually changes into a quasi-bound state as the electric field strength increases. For the quantum-dot molecules, the valence bonds between quantum dots alternates between the covalent bonds and ionic bonds with increasing electric field strength. The oscillator strength of intraband transition reflects the effect of the electric field on the valence bond property in quantum-dot molecules.
