Atthe first stage, the structureof theZnSe crystal doped with chromium atoms (ZnCrSe)has been found by optimization procedure. At the second stage, the electronic properties of this material have been evaluated within the two approaches. The exchange-correlation functionals used here are based on the generalized gradient approximation (GGA) and the hybrid functional PBE0. The GGA approach provides the metallic state for electrons with the spin up, and for opposite spin orientation the material ZnCrSe bahaves as semiconductor, with the band gap of 2.48 eV. The hybrid functional approach also gives a gapless state for a spin up electron states, and for a spin down it provides the forbidden gap value of 2.39 eV. The magnetic moment of the unit cell, found with the two functionals, is the same and equals to 4 Bμ(Bohr magnetons). So, the calculations with the two exchange-correlation functionals provide the prediction of half-metallic properties of the ZnCrSe material, which is an interesting candidate for spintronic applications.

Chromium dioxide (CrO2) has been extensively used in the magnetic recording industry. However, it is its ferromagnetic half-metallic nature that has more recently attracted much attention, primarily for the development of spintronic devices. CrO2 is the only stoichiometric binary oxide theoretically predicted to be fully spin polarized at the Fermi level. It presents a Curie temperature of ∼ 396 K, i.e. well above room temperature, and a magnetic moment of 2 mB per formula unit. However an antiferromagnetic native insulating layer of Cr2O3 is always present on the CrO2 surface which enhances the CrO2 magnetoresistance and might be used as a barrier in magnetic tunnel junctions.

Solid solutions 1T-CrxTi1-xSe2 (x = 0-0,83) were synthesized. Single crystals in the concentration range x = 0-0.69 were grown. Structure of these materials was studied on single- and polycrystalline samples. It was determined that chromium atoms substitute for titanium atoms in the TiSe2 host lattice. XPS measurements of the core levels together with the resonance valence band spectra of the 1T-CrxTi1-xSe2, as well as absorption spectra of Ti and Cr were performed. According to the experimental XAS data and multiplet atomic calculation, titanium and chromium atoms have oxidation numbers of +4 and +3, respectively. The local magnetic moment of about 3 eV is detected at Cr atoms. A transition into the spin glass state is observed. The modeling calculations of chromium local density of states were carried out. These results are in a good agreement with the experimental ones and suggest that 3d density of electronic states of chromium that substitutes for titanium in the host lattice is spin polarized and has a half-metallic character.
