AbstractThe paper is concerned with the analytical study of nonlinear coupling of slow Alfvén wave (SW) with ion acoustic waves (IAWs) in high-β and low-β plasmas. Here the pump wave (SW) number density gets perturbed in the presence of IAW. The model equations of IAW and SW turn out to be the modified Zakharov system of equations when the ponderomotive nonlinearities are incorporated in the IAW and SW dynamics. Growth rate of modulational instability has been calculated. The relevance of these investigations for solar wind plasma and solar coronal plasma has also been discussed.

New features of the twisted dusty plasma modes and associated instabilities are investigated in permeating plasmas. Using the Vlasov–Poisson model equations, a generalized dispersion relation is obtained for a Maxwellian distributed plasma to analyse the dust-acoustic and dust-ion-acoustic waves with finite orbital angular momentum (OAM) states. Existence conditions for damping/growth rates are discussed and showed significant modifications in twisted dusty modes as compared to straight propagating dusty modes. Numerically, the instability growth rate, which depends on particle streaming and twist effects in the wave potential, is significantly modified due to the Laguerre–Gaussian profiles. Relevance of the study to wave excitations due to penetration of solar wind into cometary clouds or interstellar dusty plasmas is discussed.

The Kadomtsev-Petviashili (KP) equation is derived for weakly nonlinear ion acoustic waves in a magnetized dusty plasma in the presence of nonthermal electrons. Soliton solutions are obtained in both the one-dimensional and two-dimensional framework. For the one-dimensional soliton solution the ‘tanh’ method is considered while the two-dimensional solution is obtained by a method introduced by S.V. Manacov et al., Phys. Lett. A 63, 205 (1977). It is found that in case of the onedimensional solution, both compressive and rarefactive solitary waves exist which could be obtained depending on the ratio of the electron and ion density. It is also seen that the nonthermal distribution of electrons has some significant effect in the shape of both the one-dimensional and two-dimensional solitary wave.

Two-dimensional three-component plasma system consisting of nonextensive electrons, positrons, and relativistic thermal ions is considered. The well-known Kadomtsev-Petviashvili-Burgers and Kadomtsev-Petviashvili equations are derived to study the basic characteristics of small but finite amplitude ion acoustic waves of the plasmas by using the reductive perturbation method. The influences of positron concentration, electron-positron and ion-electron temperature ratios, strength of electron and positrons nonextensivity, and relativistic streaming factor on the propagation of ion acoustic waves in the plasmas are investigated. It is revealed that the electrostatic compressive and rarefactive ion acoustic waves are obtained for superthermal electrons and positrons, but only compressive ion acoustic waves are found and the potential profiles become steeper in case of subthermal positrons and electrons.

This research uses the counter-attitudinal essay paradigm ( Janis & King, 1954 ) to test the effects of social actions on social representations. Thus, students wrote either a pro- or a counter-attitudinal essay on Higher Education. Three forms of counter-attitudinal essays were manipulated countering respectively a) students’ attitudes towards higher education; b) peripheral beliefs or c) central beliefs associated with this representation object. After writing the essay, students expressed their attitudes towards higher education and evaluated different beliefs associated with it. The structural status of these beliefs was also assessed by a “calling into question” test ( Flament, 1994a ). Results show that behavior challenging either an attitude or peripheral beliefs induces a rationalization process, giving rise to minor modifications of the representational field. These modifications are only on the social evaluative dimension of the social representation. On the other hand, when the behavior challenges central beliefs, the same rationalization process induces a cognitive restructuring of the representational field, i.e., a structural change in the representation. These results and their implications for the experimental study of representational dynamics are discussed with regard to the two-dimensional model of social representations ( Moliner, 1994 ) and rationalization theory ( Beauvois & Joule, 1996 ).
