Abstract Using the Parker Solar Probe FIELDS bandpass-filter data and SWEAP electron data from Encounters 1 through 9, we show statistical properties of narrowband whistlers from ∼16 R s to ∼130 R s, and compare wave occurrence to electron properties including beta, temperature anisotropy, and heat flux. Whistlers are very rarely observed inside ∼28 R s (∼0.13 au). Outside 28 R s, they occur within a narrow range of parallel electron beta from ∼1 to 10, and with a beta-heat flux occurrence consistent with the whistler heat flux fan instability. Because electron distributions inside ∼30 R s display signatures of the ambipolar electric field, the lack of whistlers suggests that the modification of the electron distribution function associated with the ambipolar electric field or changes in other plasma properties must result in lower instability limits for the other modes (including the observed solitary waves and ion acoustic waves) that are observed close to the Sun. The lack of narrowband whistler-mode waves close to the Sun and in regions of either low (<0.1) or high (>10) beta is also significant for the understanding and modeling of the evolution of flare-accelerated electrons and the regulation of heat flux in astrophysical settings including other stellar winds, the interstellar medium, accretion disks, and the intragalaxy cluster medium.

The modulational instability (MI) of ion-acoustic waves (IAWs) is examined theoretically in a four-component plasma system containing inertialess electrons featuring a non-thermal, non-extensive distribution, iso-thermal positrons, and positively as well as negatively charged inertial ions. In this connection, a non-linear Schrödinger equation (NLSE), which dominates the conditions for MI associated with IAWs, is obtained by using the reductive perturbation method. The numerical analysis of the NLSE reveals that the increment in non-thermality leads to a more unstable state, whereas the enhancement in non-extensivity introduces a less unstable state. It also signifies the bright (dark) ion-acoustic (IA) envelope solitons mode in the unstable (stable) domain. The conditions for MI and its growth rate in the unstable regime of the IAWs are vigorously modified by the different plasma parameters (viz., non-thermal, non-extensive q-distributed electron, iso-thermal positron, the ion charge state, the mass of the ion and positron, non-thermal parameter α, the temperature of electron and positron, etc.). Our findings may supplement and add to prior research in non-thermal, non-extensive electrons and iso-thermal positrons that can co-exist with positive as well as negative inertial ions.

Abstract A general set of equations that govern global resistive interchange, resistive internal kink and resistive infernal modes in a toroidal axisymmetric equilibrium are systematically derived in detail. Tractable equations are developed such that resistive effects on the fundamental rational surface can be treated together with resistive effects on the rational surfaces of the sidebands. Resistivity introduces coupling of pressure driven toroidal instabilities with ion acoustic waves, while compression introduces flute-like flows and damping of instabilities, enhanced by toroidal effects. It is shown under which equilibrium conditions global interchange, internal kink modes or infernal modes occur. The m = 1 internal kink is derived for the first time from higher order infernal mode equations, and new resistive infernal modes resonant at the q = 1 surface are reduced analytically. Of particular interest are the competing effects of resistive corrections on the rational surfaces of the fundamental harmonic and on the sidebands, which in this paper is investigated for standard profiles developed for the m = 1 internal kink problem.
