In this work, an experimental study was conducted about the effect of gas pressure on the growth rate of the mirror instability produced in hollow electrodes discharge (HED) plasma in two regions: inter-electrodes gap and internal cathode cavity, by optical emission spectroscopy. Optical emission spectroscopy measurements, at different gas pressures in two regions under study, show that the electron number density (ne) increase with increasing gas pressure from 0.04 to 0.2 Torr. While the electron temperature (Te) decrease with increased gas pressure. In addition, the growth rate increase with increasing electron temperature anisotropy in both regions.

Abstract Instabilities described by linear theory characterize an important form of wave–particle interaction in the solar wind. We diagnose unstable behavior of solar wind plasma between 0.3 and 1 au via the Nyquist criterion, applying it to fits of ∼1.5M proton and α particle Velocity Distribution Functions (VDFs) observed by Helios I and II. The variation of the fraction of unstable intervals with radial distance from the Sun is linear, signaling a gradual decline in the activity of unstable modes. When calculated as functions of the solar wind velocity and Coulomb number, we obtain more extreme, exponential trends in the regions where collisions appear to have a notable influence on the VDF. Instability growth rates demonstrate similar behavior, and significantly decrease with Coulomb number. We find that for a nonnegligible fraction of observations, the proton beam or secondary component might not be detected, due to instrument resolution limitations, and demonstrate that the impact of this issue does not affect the main conclusions of this work.

In the present work, the propagation of (non)linear electrostatic waves is reported in a normal (electron–ion) magnetoplasma. The inertialess electrons follow a non-extensive q-distribution, while the positive inertial ions are assumed to be warm mobile. In the linear regime, the dispersion relation for both the fast and slow modes is derived, whose properties are analyzed parametrically, focusing on the effect of nonextensive parameter, component of parallel anisotropic ion pressure, component of perpendicular anisotropic ion pressure, and magnetic field strength. The reductive perturbation technique is employed for reducing the fluid equation of the present plasma model to a Zakharov–Kuznetsov (ZK) equation. The parametric role of physical parameters on the characteristics of the symmetry planar structures such solitary waves is investigated. Furthermore, the stability of the pulse soliton solution of the ZK equation against the oblique perturbations is investigated. Furthermore, the dependence of the instability growth rate on the related physical parameters is examined. The present investigation could be useful in space and astrophysical plasma systems.

Time-resolved particle image velocimetry measurements were performed downstream of a swept backward-facing step. The measurements allow detailed analysis of the interactions between the unsteady instabilities and the stationary crossflow vortices. Different mechanisms are identified that lead to the modulation of the different families of unsteady instabilities that occur downstream of the step. For the low-frequency spanwise-travelling mode, the modulation occurs due to a redistribution of momentum when the instability encounters regions of large spanwise shear of the wall-normal and streamwise velocity. However, the higher-frequency streamwise-travelling instabilities undergo the familiar ‘lift-up’ mechanism when they encounter the regions of large vertical velocity due to the presence of the stationary crossflow vortices. The process leading to large velocity spikes, and ultimately to a laminar breakdown to turbulence, is identified as a constructive interaction between the different unsteady instabilities, coupled with an interaction with the stationary crossflow vortices when the phases align properly.

By using 2.5-dimensional resistive MHD simulations, dynamics of the plasmoid instability in a Harris current sheet has been studied with taking into account two main controlling parameters: the plasma-β in the range (0 < β < 1) and the amplitude ratio of magnetic guide field to the reconnection plane field in three different cases with zero, uniform, and non-uniform guide field. Varying the plasma-β changes the plasma compressibility which affects significantly on the linear and nonlinear growth rates of the plasmoid instability. For each of three cases, some associated scaling relations between the instability growth rate, the plasma-β and the magnitude of guide field are obtained.

AbstractDynamic mitigation for the tearing mode instability in the current sheet in collisionless plasmas is demonstrated by applying a wobbling electron current beam. The initial small amplitude modulations imposed on the current sheet induce the electric current filamentation and the reconnection of the magnetic field lines. When the wobbling or oscillatory motion is added from the electron beam having a form of a thin layer moving along the current sheet, the perturbation phase is mixed and consequently the instability growth is saturated remarkably, like in the case of the feed-forward control.
