The fine structure and the distribution of an esterase have been studied in the cuticle of Galleria larvae, Tenebrio larvae and pupae, and in the wax-secreting cuticle of the honey bee, and compared with those in the cuticle of the caterpillar of Calpodes. In Galleria and Tenebrio the pore canals are spaces passing through the lamellate endocuticle from the epithelium to the epicuticle. They contain a filament from the cells which may be concerned in their formation. The shape of the pore canal is probably determined by the orientation of the fibres making up the lamellae in the endocuticle and is not a regular helix. The pore canals also contain numerous filaments of another sort which pass on through the epicuticle and are believed to be the origin of the surface wax. They are particularly abundant in the pore canals of the honey bee wax-secreting cuticle and extend into the cell in long pockets surrounded by an envelope of the plasma membrane. The esterase is probably concerned with the final stage of wax synthesis, for its distribution is similar to that of the lipid filaments.

Temporal and spatial variations in ozone levels and temporal changes in solar radiation greatly influence ultraviolet radiation incidence to crops throughout their growth, yet the interactive effects of CO2 and UV-B radiation on Basil production under sunlight environmental conditions has not been studied. Basil ‘Genovese’ plants grown under sunlit plant growth chambers were subjected to a combination of supplemental UV-B (0 and 10 kJ m−2d−1) and ambient (420 ppm) and elevated (720 ppm) CO2 treatments for 38 days after 14 days of germination. UV-B radiation treatments caused a decrease in basil stem branching, fresh mass, and stem dry mass under both CO2 treatments when harvested after 17 and 38 days of treatment. There was also an increase in basil leaf surface wax under UV-B (10 kJ m−2d−1) treatment compared to controls (0 kJ m−2d−1). Elevated CO2 treatments caused a decrease in morphological features, including specific leaf area and fresh mass. Interactive effects between UV-B and CO2 treatments existed for some morphological features, including plant height, root surface area, and average root diameter. Understanding the impacts that CO2 and UV-B radiation treatments have on basilcan improve existing varieties for increased tolerance while simultaneously improving yield, plant morphology, and physiology.

The chemical composition, crystal morphology and expression levels of associated genes involved in the cuticular wax of three pear cultivars ‘Housui’, ‘Cuiguan’ and ‘Yuluxiang’ after treatment with palmitic acid (PA), hexacosanoic acid (HA), ethephon and methyl jasmonate (Meja) were determined. A total of 59 cuticular wax compounds were detected across all samples. The wax coverage of ‘Housui’ fruits increased by 71.74, 93.48 and 89.13% after treatment with PA, ethephon and Meja, respectively, and treatment with PA, HA and Meja also increased the wax coverage in ‘Cuiguan’ (65.33, 20.00 and 21.33% respectively) and in ‘Yuluxiang’ (38.60, 63.16 and 42.11% respectively) fruits. Heatmap clustering analysis and partial least-squares-discriminate analysis (PLS-DA) also revealed that the different treatments exerted various influences on cuticular wax among the different cultivars. In addition, the wax component coverage and wax crystal structures showed variations among the different cultivars as well as different treatments. Gene expression analysis revealed 11 genes likely to be involved in pear fruit wax synthesis, transport and regulation. Taken together, the results of this study demonstrate that the differences in the cuticular waxes of the fruits of different cultivars after treatment with PA, HA, ethephon or Meja might lead to a better understanding of the regulatory effect of a substrate or elicitor on the composition and deposition of cuticular waxes.
