Urgent needs concerning energy efficiency and environmental politics require novel approaches to materials design. One recent example is thereby the implementation of light-weight intermetallic titanium aluminides as structural materials for the application in turbine blades of aero-engines as well as in turbocharger turbine wheels for the next generation of automotive engines. Each production process leads to specific microstructures which can be altered and optimized by thermo-mechanical processing and / or subsequent heat-treatments. To develop sound and sustainable processing routes, knowledge on solidification processes and phase transformation sequences in advanced TiAl alloys is fundamental. Therefore, in-situ diffraction techniques employing synchrotron radiation and neutrons were used for establishing phase fraction diagrams, investigating advanced heat-treatments as well as for optimizing thermo-mechanical processing. Summarizing all results a consistent picture regarding microstructure formation and its impact on mechanical properties in advanced multi-phase TiAl alloys can be given.

ABSTRACTRapid solidification processes (RSP) have been reviewed. The structural refinement one may obtain via RSP and the consolidation methods which need to be utilized have also been reviewed. The merits of low pressure plasma deposition (LPPD) or rapid solidification by plasma deposition (RSPD) as a means of combining both the atomization and consolidation steps of RSP is highlighted. The applications and challenges of RSPD are discussed.

The high operating temperature of the photovoltaic (PV) modules decreases significantly its efficiency. The integration of phase change material (PCM) is one of the feasible techniques for reducing the operating temperature of the PV module. A numerical simulation of the PV module with PCM and without PCM has been realized. The thermal behavior of the PV module was evaluated at the melting and solidification processes of PCM. The results show that the integration of RT35HC PCM with a thickness of 4 cm reduces the temperature of the PV module by 8 °C compared to the reference module. Compared the RT35 and RT35HC, we found that the latent heat has a significant effect on the PCM thermal comportment. Furthermore, it has been found that the thermal resistance of the layers plays an important role to dissipate the heat from the PV cells to the PCM layer, consequently improving the heat transfer inside the PV/PCM system.

Some aspects of stochastic nature of the solidification processes are described. Firstly, the influence of the random grains nucleation on the cooling curves repeatability in the thin wall casting is presented. Secondly, the foundations of an average shape prediction for geometry of ele¬mentary diffusion field (concept of the Averaged Voronoi Polyhedron, AVP) are shown for the mi¬cro-modelling of the diffusion limited growth. Stochastic nature of the grains nucleation and growth is taken into account in the solidification modelling based on the Cellular Automaton technique (CA).
