Informal businesses used to be something that was only tolerated in the former black townships during the years of apartheid. Since then the informal business sector has become an integral part of the central business setup of cities in South Africa. It not only serves to widen the security net of the urban poor in cities, it also represents the outcome of the democratization process in the country over the past fifteen years. Yet, there has been a tendency amongst local authorities to take steps to reduce the footprint of this sector in the urban environment in recent years. This trend ties in with the new approach of government to transform South African cities to become ’world class’ centres - a step that is aimed at making the cities more visually acceptable to visitors from abroad. In this paper an attempt is made to demonstrate the importance of the informal sector within the urban business makeup and to show what role it played in the spatial-structural evolution of the urban economies during the 1990s. The paper analyzes the structure of the urban business sector as a whole and structurally links the formal and informal sectors, demonstrating the importance of both sectors in the economic makeup of the cities. It analyses the structure of the informal sector and shows how different layers of the sector potentially relates to the formal urban sector.

Branding is a key strategic tool used to create awareness, reputation and build the organisation’s image. Marketers consider brands as carriers of values, and the development and implementation of branding strategies and programmes have lately expanded to include more than the traditional corporate, product and service domains of branding. In this article we set out to define and briefly discuss the nature of branding and indicate how brands are used to define the product to the customer. One of the major challenges facing South African business and marketing executives in the new millennium is to create world-class brands that will put South African brands on the national and international map.

A world class project must have a disciplined business risk management. As a good project manager, he should manage project risk successfully. Through business risk management, he can identify risk of the project, find the cause of all business risks, then define the influence of all risks. He can take measures to avoid, transfer, and mitigate the risk. A field development includes production facilities, risers and pipelines and subsea wells, in which the pipelines and risers connect the subsea wells and production facilities to transfer oil and gas. The cost of offshore pipelines and risers is major. In the following we shall take offshore pipeline and riser as a case study to practice the principal of business risk management step by step. It has been demonstrated that the method may be applied to maximize the returning for the stakeholders in an offshore field development. However, it is suggested to accumulate and update the data bases required for an accurate statistical evaluation.

There is a common perception that logistics practice and supply chain management have not yet reached the required international standards among all the supply chain members in the South African automotive industry. This article is based on a research study that investigated possible reasons for the inconsistent supply of materials in the Eastern Cape automotive industry specifically. Problems identified include the fact that suppliers are not evaluated on a regular basis and do not receive sufficient logistics training, while a commitment and will to development local suppliers is lacking. Recommendations made to the South African automotive industry include the improvement of development programmes to assist local suppliers in becoming world-class suppliers, better logistics training, more regular supplier assessments, as well as improved mutual communication among suppliers and motor vehicle assemblers.

In contrast to the beautiful array of colorful layers and spectacular cliffs of the Triassic and Jurassic (251 to 148 million years ago [Ma]) sections in the San Rafael Swell of east-central Utah, most of the Upper Cretaceous (96 to 86 Ma) Mancos Shale produces a drab, barren landscape. However, lying within the Mancos, the Ferron Sandstone, is the most studied unit in the San Rafael Swell. The Ferron has world-class outcrops of rock layers deposited near the shorelines of a sinking, fluvial- (stream) dominated delta system. Along the west flank of the San Rafael Swell, the 80-mile-long (130 km) Ferron outcrop belt of cliffs and side canyons (e.g., the Coal Cliffs, Molen Reef, and Limestone Cliffs [not actually limestone, just misnamed]) provides a three-dimensional view of vertical and lateral changes in the Ferron’s rock layers (facies and sequence stratigraphy), and, as such, is an excellent model for fluvial-deltaic oil and gas reservoirs worldwide (e.g., Chidsey and others, 2004).

The changing environment in an organization is forcing the organization to find a plan of integrated management framework and adequate performance measurement. Failure to plan basically means planning failure for the business. Finding the critical factors of quality management practices (QMP), themediating roles of the contextual factors of world-class performance in operations (i.e., world-class company practices or WCC, operational excellence practices or OE, company nonfinancial performance or CNFP), and the company financial performance would enable the company to facilitate the sustainability of TQM implementation model. This empirical study aims to assess how TQM—a holistic management philosophy initially developed by W. Edward Deming, which integrates improvement strategy, management practices, and organizational performance—is specifically implemented in the oil and gas companies operating in Indonesia. Relevant literature on the TQM, the world-class performance in operations (world-class company and operational performance), the company performance (financial and non-financial performances), and the amendments of the Law of the Republic of Indonesia concerning the oil and gas industry, and related research on how the oil and gas industry in Indonesia develops sustainable competitive advantage and sustainable development programs are reviewed in details in our study. The findings from data analysis provide evidence that there is a strong positive relationship between the critical factors of quality management practices and the company financial performance mediated by the three mediating variables, i.e., world-class company practices, operational excellence practices, and company non-financial performance.

This chapter reports research findings into the productivity challenge facing the Australian oil and gas industry. This industry has been experiencing cost overruns indicating a productivity decline that puts future projects and investment at risk. Using world-class survey methodologies developed by the Centre for Business Research at Cambridge University and adapted for the oil and gas industry, an evidence-based view on business decisions and conditions is provided and linked to performance. While many of the productivity challenges facing the Australian oil and gas industry are beyond immediate managerial control, this research shows that key productivity drivers are in the realm of the firm to influence. The research reported in this chapter shows that improvements in innovation, collaboration, and deeper competitive capabilities are the best levers to lift business productivity and to build a growth pathway for the future for this industry.
