Purpose This paper aims to propose a systematic approach to facilitate passenger flow in high speed rail (HSR) stations. A case study is conducted to validate the approach. Design/methodology/approach This paper argues that HSR station management consists of train management, station capacity management, waiting room management and passenger flow management, and that two-way and dynamic information exchange exists among the components. Accordingly, the proposed approach integrates the components in HSR station management based on information exchange and heuristic algorithms. A HSR station in China with four regular waiting rooms, one mother-and-infant waiting room and one VIP waiting room located on two floors are chosen for a case study. An arrangement plan for waiting zones and waiting rooms is generated by following the proposed approach. Findings The result of the case study indicates that the proposed approach is capable of arranging waiting zones and waiting rooms quickly and effectively to maximize utilization of waiting room capacity and to minimize passenger walking distance from waiting rooms to platforms. Research limitations/implications The management problem of railway station waiting room also relates to some other factors such as platforms, tracks adjustment and delay of the trains. As an emerging technology, the Internet of Things (IoT) is expected to offer promising solutions to transform the operation and role of many existing industrial systems such as transportation systems including railway systems. The future study of the authors will focus on IoT intelligent railway management system. Practical implications The result indicates that the proposed method is an effective solution to the management of railway station waiting room, which can be applied to railway station management system. Social implications China Railway System provides service to billions of passengers. This research has significant social-economic impacts. Originality/value This paper fulfills an information integrated approach for improving waiting room management in high speed railway stations and a case study testing the approach.

The setting of railway station waiting room and waiting zones relates to passengers' feeling and satisfaction. In this article, the authors develop an optimization model for railway station waiting room assignment, as well as considering adjustment of platforms. With four types of improvement strategies: zone optimization, room optimization, time optimization and interactive priority policy, this optimal model aims to effectively and efficiently improve the railway service quality and security.

Methods for solving the carrying capacity problem for High-Speed Railways (HSRs) have received increasing attention in the literature in the last few years. As important nodes in the High-Speed Railway (HSR) network, large stations are usually the carrying capacity bottlenecks of the entire network due to the presence of multiple connections in different directions and the complexity of train operations at these stations. This paper focuses on solving the station carrying capacity problem and considers train set utilization constraints, which are important influencing factors that have rarely been studied by previous researchers. An integer linear programming model is built, and the CPLEX v12.2 software is used to solve the model. The proposed approach is tested on a real-world case study of the Beijing South Railway Station (BS), which is one of the busiest and most complex stations in China. Studies of the impacts of different train set utilization constraints on the practical station carrying capacity are carried out, and some suggestions are then presented for enhancing the practical carrying capacity. Contrast tests indicate that both the efficiency of the solving process and the quality of the solution show huge breakthroughs compared with the heuristic approach.

Under the regional economic conditions, a passenger flow prediction model is proposed in the paper. It can predict high-speed railway passenger flow volume under the conditions of multi-mode, and guide the reasonable operation of high-speed railway effectively. According to the data analysis of Beijing and Tianjin railway stations, we can know that the reasonable ticket price plays an important role in high-speed railway operation benefit under regional economic conditions.

Carrying capacity calculation at high-speed railway stations is closely related to the trains with different types and arriving rules. Traditional method is not feasible to calculate and evaluate carrying capacity at high-speed railway stations efficiently and accurately. Therefore, a method to calculate carrying capacity at high-speed railway stations was presented by establishing a route selection optimization model and designing corresponding algorithm. In the method, the integration concept of calculating carrying capacity was introduced by establishing the relationship between receiving dispatching route and arrival-departure track. An approach was provided to the solution of route selection scheme and calculating carrying capacity at high-speed railway stations efficiently and accurately by considering the differences of trains with different operation modes and operation time. Case study of Jinan West railway station verifies the feasibility of the method. The presented method can provide a technical support for calculating and evaluating carrying capacity at high-speed railway stations in different scenarios.

In recent years, high speed railway stations rapidly increase, and the effect of high-speed railway stations on social and economic appears gradually. The prediction of the influence has become a research focus in the social and economic theory. In this paper, based on the study of accessibility, the influence of high speed railway station to the accessibility of each regional is analyzed, and a dynamic model of the influence of high-speed railway station is built on the correlation of the accessibility and economic development, which forecast the influence of the high speed railway station in Beijing-shanghai. On the basis of prediction, this paper also discuss the correlated factors about the influence changes of high speed railway station, the result prove that the topology structure of high-speed railway line has significant contact with the influence changes of the station.
