Abstract Physics in general is successfully governed by quantum mechanics at the microscale and principles of relativity at the macroscale. Any attempts to unify them using conventional methods have somewhat remained elusive for nearly a century up to the present stage. Here in this study, a classical gedanken experiment of electron-wave diffraction of a single slit is intuitively examined for its quantized states. A unidirectional monopole field as quanta of the electric field is pictorially conceptualized into 4D space-time. Its application towards quantum mechanics and general relativity in accordance with existing knowledge in physics paves an alternative path towards their reconciliation process. This assumes a multiverse at a hierarchy of scales with gravity localized to a body into space. Principles of special relativity are then sustained along inertia frames of extra dimensions within the proposed model. Such descriptions provide an approximate intuitive tool to examine physics in general from alternative perspectives using conventional methods and this warrants further investigations.

By considering separately the two terms of the Sommerfeld solution of wave diffraction behind a semi-infinite breakwater, the influence of the wave reflection from the structure can be evaluated The diffraction coefficient at any point can be obtained from a graph or table for full, partial or no reflection by the simple addition of two coefficients From the similarity of the energy-spreading process to the dam-burst problem, it was found that wave heights decreased consistently along the near circular crests for all distances from the breakwater tip For a workable range of incident angle and distance from the breakwater, wave heights could be defined by this arc distance from the shadow line expressed in wave lengths These relationships have been verified experimentally for all but the smallest incident angle in proximity to the breakwater This can be likened to the dam model in which the dam is moving too slowly to permit normal spreading. The several theoretical solutions for the breakwater gap, when graphed on the same basis, are shown to be very similar, diverging only for small incident angles New parameters are provided which greatly simplify the presentation of information The scatter of past experimental data precludes the verification of this theory and indicates the need for further tests.

Abstract To integrate a terahertz pump into an ultrafast electron diffraction (UED) experiment has attracted much attention due to its potential to initiate and detect the structural dynamics both directly. However, the deflection of the electron probe by the electromagnetic field of the terahertz pump alters the incident angle of the electron probe on the sample, impeding it from recording structural information afterwards. In this article, we studied this issue by a theoretical simulation of the terahertz-induced deflection effect on the electron probe, and came up with several possible schemes to reduce such effect. As a result, a terahertz-pump-electron-probe UED experiment with a temporal resolution comparable to the terahertz period is realized. We also found that MeV UED was more suitable for such terahertz pump experiment.
