Observation of a gravitational Aharonov-Bohm effect

Gravitational interference The Aharonov-Bohm effect is a quantum mechanical effect in which a magnetic field affects the phase of an electron wave as it propagates along a wire. Atom interferometry exploits the wave characteristic of atoms to measure tiny differences in phase as they take different paths through the arms of an interferometer. Overstreet et al . split a cloud of cold rubidium atoms into two atomic wave packets about 25 centimeters apart and subjected one of the wave packets to gravitational interaction with a large mass (see the Perspective by Roura). The authors state that the observed phase shift is consistent with a gravitational Aharonov-Bohm effect. —ISO

Investigation of features for prediction modeling of nano-scale conduction with time-dependent calculation of electron wave packet

The model to predict the electron transmission probability from the random impurity distribution in a two-dimensional nanowire system by combining the time evolution of the electron wave function and machine learning is proposed. We have shown that the intermediate state of the time evolution calculation is a great advantage for efficient modeling by machine learning. The features for machine learning are extracted by analyzing the time variation of the electron density distribution using time evolution calculations. Consequently, the prediction error of the model is improved by performing machine learning based on the features. The proposed method provides a useful perspective for analyzing the motion of electrons in nanoscale semiconductors.

An electron wave packet in the relativistic strophotron FEL

The theory of free electron lasers (FELs) is well developed both in quantum mechanical and classical approaches. In strophotron FEL, in classical approach, resonance frequency and the gain are strongly dependent on initial parameters of electron beam. In the quantum mechanical approach considered by Zaretsky and Nersesov (1983 JETP 57 518), there is no such dependence. The correspondence between the quantum mechanical and classical approaches in a relativistic strophotron FEL is discussed. We study the initial distribution of electrons over vibrational levels determined by the expansion coefficients in relativistic strophotron FEL. It is shown, (presenting electron wave function in the form of Gaussian wave packet), that the number of the vibrational level most efficiently populated at the initial moment of time can be expressed in terms of the initial parameters of the electron beam.

Systemic consequences of disorder in magnetically self-organized topological MnBi2Te4/(Bi2Te3)n superlattices

MnBi2Te4/(Bi2Te3)n materials system has recently generated strong interest as a natural platform for realization of the quantum anomalous Hall (QAH) state. The system is magnetically much better ordered than substitutionally doped materials, however, the detrimental effects of certain disorders are becoming increasingly acknowledged. Here, from compiling structural, compositional, and magnetic metrics of disorder in ferromagnetic MnBi2Te4/(Bi2Te3)n it is found that migration of Mn between MnBi2Te4 septuple layers (SLs) and otherwise non-magnetic Bi2Te3 quintuple layers (QLs) has systemic consequences - it induces ferromagnetic coupling of Mn-depleted SLs with Mn-doped QLs, seen in ferromagnetic resonance as an acoustic and optical resonance mode of the two coupled spin subsystems. Even for a large SL separation (n ≳ 4 QLs) the structure cannot be considered as a stack of uncoupled two-dimensional layers. Angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and density functional theory studies show that Mn disorder within an SL causes delocalization of electron wave functions and a change of the surface band structure as compared to the ideal MnBi2Te4/(Bi2Te3)n. These findings highlight the critical importance of inter- and intra-SL disorder towards achieving new QAH platforms as well as exploring novel axion physics in intrinsic topological magnets.

Effects of time on the evolution of a wave packet in the tunneling dynamics

We investigate the time-dependent electron wave packet in a one-dimensional geometry with the potential bent by a homogeneous external field. Based on the behaviors of the wave packet over time, we observe a crossover time. After this crossover time, the temporal evolution of the wave packet comes into a new regime, where the wave packet evolves in a self-similar structure. To establish the time scale of this crossover quantitatively, we utilize the Loschmidt Echo function, through which the time at which the crossover occurs can be extracted. We also find the time of the maximum ionization velocity can be comparable with the semi-classical tunneling delay time.

Generation in the regime with three resonance frequencies

If the group velocity of the wave is close to the bunch velocity, the bunch placed in the maximumum of the radiated pulse. It provides high effeciency of the electron-wave interaction. However, there are other factors related to particle dynamics, which have strong influence on the radiation process. In this paper the regime with three resonance frequencies is discussed. By varying the phase size of the electron bunch, the generation conditions at each of the frequencies can be changed. There are results for the spontaneous coherent super-radiative undulator emission in the terahertz frequency range from a short (as compared to the wavelength of the radiated wave) dense electron bunch. As a result, an electron bunch radiates two pulses with amplitudes of the radiated fields ∼ 10-70 MV/m.

Quantum interference and imaging using intense laser fields

The interference of matter waves is one of the intriguing features of quantum mechanics that has impressed researchers and laymen since it was first suggested almost a century ago. Nowadays, attosecond science tools allow us to utilize it in order to extract valuable information from electron wave packets. Intense laser fields are routinely employed to create electron wave packets and control their motion with attosecond and ångström precision. In this perspective article, which is based on our debate at the Quantum Battles in Attoscience virtual workshop 2020, we discuss some of the peculiarities of intense light-matter interaction. We review some of the most important techniques used in attosecond imaging, namely photoelectron holography and laser-induced electron diffraction. We attempt to ask and answer a few questions that do not get asked very often. For example, if we are interested in position space information, why are measurements carried out in momentum space? How to accurately retrieve photoelectron spectra from the numerical solution of the time-dependent Schrödinger equation? And, what causes the different coherence properties of high-harmonic generation and above-threshold ionization? GraphicAbstract
