Abstract The design, manufacturing and DC and microwave characterization of high-power Schottky barrier InAlAs/InGaAs back-illuminated mesa structure photodiodes are presented. The photodiodes with 10 and 15 μm mesa diameters operate at ≥40 and 28 GHz, respectively, have the output RF power as high as 58 mW at a frequency of 20 GHz, the DC responsivity of up to 1.08 A/W depending on the absorbing layer thickness, and a photodiode dark current as low as 0.04 nA. We show that these photodiodes provide an advantage in the amplitude-to-phase conversion factor which makes them suitable for use in high-speed analog transmission lines with stringent requirements for phase noise.

Vision and hearing (visual and auditory receptors) are still dominant senses when arranging our knowledge of the outside world. At this year's Consumer and Computing International Consumer Electronics Show chief American subsidiary of Bosch, Werner Struth, said that the "analog world as we know it ends." Our perception remains analog as well as the continued transfer of information persists analog transmission channel into which may interfere with, among other things, restrictions resulting from digital technologies.

In order to improve the detection performance of distributed detection system under noisy fading channel, two analog transmission schemes, i.e. an analog transmission and a modified analog transmission, were proposed. Simulations show that, when the channel SNR is high, such as larger than 20dB, the system with the proposed analog transmission scheme can approach that with ideal transmission condition in detection performance. For low channel SNR, such as less than 10dB, the modified analog transmission scheme results in better detection performance than the binary transmission scheme proposed in literature. Therefore, according to the channel state information at the sensor, the sensor can select appropriate transmission scheme to improve the system’s detection performance.

Starting in the 1950s, AT&T has been involved in the design, installation, and operation of undersea coaxial cable systems to provide international and inter-island telecommunication services. These systems are analog transmission systems, utilizing frequency division multiplexing to simultaneously transmit multiple channels over a single cable. With the passage of time, and in response to an ever growing demand for services, the frequency bandwidths of successive systems have been increased to accommodate the need for increased traffic density. The increases in bandwidth have been accompanied by increases in copper ohmic losses, brought about by the skin effect phenomenon, mandating ever shorter spacing between repeaters, and consequently larger numbers of repeaters for a given system length. The reliability outlook for extending coaxial cable technology beyond its present capacity, with a decrease in repeater spacing below the current value of about 9 km, is not favorable.Fortunately, we now have available optical fibers for transmission media. Unlike coaxial cable, the fiber medium is not limited by the skin effect phenomenon. Using fiber technology, we can transmit large amounts of traffic through a very small cross-sectional areas, using repeaters at infrequent intervals. Moreover, undersea fiber optical systems utilize digital (as opposed to analog) transmission, a format extremely advantageous in terms of transmission quality and the types of services that can be offered.
