IntroductionThe use of Celox gauze has been established in military practice as an adjunct in the treatment of external haemorrhage. The future character of conflict means that casualties may take longer to reach definitive care. The aim of this study was to test whether Celox Rapid, a topical haemostatic dressing, would maintain haemostasis during extended use in a junctional haemorrhage model.MethodsAn anaesthetised swine underwent simultaneous bilateral femoral arteriotomies; after 30 s of free bleeding Celox Rapid gauze was applied to the wound and pressure was maintained for 1 min. Following inspection for re-bleeding the Celox gauze was covered with standard field dressings and checked for re-bleeding every hour until the 6 hours had elapsed or the animal deceased.ResultsThere was no evidence of re-bleeding at any point up to and including 6 hours. The animal was declared deceased shortly afterwards. Celox Rapid gauze maintained haemostasis in extended use in this limited single animal model. Post mortem examination revealed a stable clot at the site of the arteriotomy with no evidence of re-bleeding.ConclusionCelox Rapid was effective at achieving initial homeostasis and preventing re-bleeding in this limited study using a single anaesthetised swine. Its potential for use in situations where evacuation and definitive care may be delayed should be explored.

The purpose of this work was to evaluate computed tomography (CT) simulators used in radiotherapy treatment planning in Serbia, Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina. A survey of quality assurance programmes of 24 CT simulators in 16 facilities was conducted. Dedicated CT-to-ED phantom was scanned at 120 kV and 140 kV, to obtain CT-to-ED (ED- Electron Density) conversion curves as well as CTDIvol. Thoracal phantoms were scanned in standard and extended field of view to evaluate dosimetric effect on treatment planning and delivery. Mean age of measured scanners was 5.5 years. The mean water HU value was -6.5 (all scanners, all voltages) and air HU value was -997. Extended field of view CT data differ from standard field of view and differences between conversion curves have significant dosimetric impact. The CTDI data showed large range of values between centers. Better QA of CT simulators in all countries is recommended. CT-to-ED curve could be used as default at one voltage and per manufacturer. Extended field of view imaging can be used, but treatment planning should be avoided in the regions out of standard field of view.

AbstractYih-fu Ruey was one of the most important ethnologists in the history of anthropological development in China and Taiwan. Ruey's kind of ethnology can be divided into ethnic classification of China, ethnography of minority peoples, and ethnohistory of the non-Han group in the Southwest. Ruey had very limited ‘standard’ field records in contacting people's daily lives, but did have full experiences of travelling historical southwestern China through literature reading.

AbstractBased on new analyses of light curves of SX Phœnicis variables in globular clusters and on results taken from the literature, an overview of oscillation patterns in this subgroup of δ Scuti variables is given. Belonging to the Blue Straggler stars, they are expected to have a more complicated life history than “normal” δ Scuti stars in the field or in open clusters. The overall picture is that the patterns found in this SX Phe group seem to be similar to the patterns that are well established for standard field δ Set stars.
