A generalized icon is an object with the dual representation of a logical part (the meaning) and a physical part (the image). We describe a formal approach to specify icon systems. Iconic operators are presented, which constitute an icon algebra to construct complex icons and define icon semantics. The Chinese character formation rules can then be explained in a unified way. Applications of this methodology are discussed.
