AbstractLet X be a $$\mathbb {Q}$$ Q -factorial complete toric variety over an algebraic closed field of characteristic 0. There is a canonical injection of the Picard group $$\mathrm{Pic}(X)$$ Pic ( X ) in the group $$\mathrm{Cl}(X)$$ Cl ( X ) of classes of Weil divisors. These two groups are finitely generated abelian groups; while the first one is a free group, the second one may have torsion. We investigate algebraic and geometrical conditions under which the image of $$\mathrm{Pic}(X)$$ Pic ( X ) in $$\mathrm{Cl}(X)$$ Cl ( X ) is contained in a free part of the latter group.

A pyritized virgular apparatus (nematularium) has been observed in Orthograptus calcaratus s.l. (Lapworth) from the Pleurograptus linearis Zone in the Ordovician Dicellograptus Shale on Bornholm, Denmark. Specimens preserved in full relief show the free part of the nematularium to be circular in cross section, 0.5 mm in diameter, surrounded by a carbon film, and infilled with pyrite. The surface is covered by rounded elongated hummocks that generally are irregularly arranged but in a few cases lie in one row or are paired. SEM investigations of cross sections reveal that the nematularium has internal carbonized membranes surrounding vesicular tissue. These virgular structures form in the distal part of the thecae portion of the rhabdosome. This new type of vesicular nematularium is unique as earlier observations on other diplograptids showed the nematularia to be single-walled, with two or three vanes. The formation of the vesicular virgular apparatus and its life function is discussed: it most likely had a floating and/or stabilizing function, and may have contained buoyant material, such as vacuolated tissue with fat globules or gas inclusions.

In the papers [11] and [18] Rohlin and Thom have introduced an equivalence relation into the set of compact orientable (not necessarily connected) differentiable manifolds, which, roughly speaking, is described in the following manner: two differentiable manifolds are equivalent (cobordantes), when they together form the boundary of a bounded differentiable manifold. The equivalence classes can be added and multiplied in a natural way and form a graded algebra Ω relative to the addition, the multiplication and the dimension of manifolds. The precise structures of the groups of cobordism Ωk of dimension k are not known thoroughly. Thom [18] has determined the free part of Ω and also calculated explicitly Ωk for 0 ≦ k ≦ 7.

We study spectral properties of random Schrödinger operators hω=h0+vω(n) on l2(Z) whose free part h0 is long range. We prove that the spectrum of hω is pure point for typical ω whenever the off-diagonal terms of h0 decay as |i-j|-γ for some γ>8.

Abstract This study uses treebanking to investigate how spoken language infiltrated legal Latin in early medieval Italy. The documents used are always formulaic, but they also always contain a ‘free’ part where the case in question is described in free prose. This paper uses this difference to measure how ten linguistic features, representative of the evolution that took place between Classical and Late Latin, are distributed between the formulaic and free parts. Some variants are attested equally often in both parts of the documents, while perceptually or conceptually salient variants appear to be preserved in their conservative form mainly in the formulaic parts.

To investigate the thermal behavior of complex model with amorphous region and crystallization region of cellulose II, the structures and properties of cellulose II, amorphous chain and their combined models were studied by molecular dynamics simulation. The results showed that the amorphous chain is more susceptible to temperature than the cellulose II. It can form anti-parallel structure similar to cellulose II at high temperature. In the complex model, one end of the amorphous chain is fixed to form hydrogen bonds with the cellulose II, and the other end is not. At 300[Formula: see text]K, the free part of amorphous chain is approximately perpendicular to the axial direction of the cellulose II. When the temperature increases, the free part of amorphous chain adheres to the surface of cellulose II. The free part of amorphous chain did not form hydrogen bond with the cellulose II. The formation of amorphous chain and surface of the cellulose II is a zipper process at 450[Formula: see text]K. Furthermore, water molecules penetrate into the inter-space of the amorphous and crystalline regions. The probability of hydrogen bonds between water molecules and the complex model was less than 8.21% which explains why cellulose is insoluble in water. These conclusions provide a guiding significance for the dissolution mechanism of cellulose.

In species of the family Heliasteridae, the ossicles of the proximal parts of the sides of each ray are joined by connective tissue to those of the adjacent rays to form interradial septa. These provide support to the extensive disc. Only a relatively small part of the ray is free. Autotomy of rays occurs in Heliaster helianthus in response to predatory attack by the asteroid Meyenaster gelatinosus. Autotomy of the ray does not occur at the base of the free part of the ray (arm) but near the base of the ray. In addition to the plane of autotomy at this location, a longitudinal plane of autotomy occurs in the connective tissue between the ossicles of the interradial septa. This indicates a plane of mutable collagenous tissue is present. Autotomy of the ray involves all these planes of autotomy and results in loss of most of the ray.

The elections for the German “Bundestag” (Parliament—Lower House) of September 6, 1953 guarantees a democratic development for the free part of the German nation. However, the real significance of these elections transcends the German borders. For months there had been a stagnation in foreign policy which, since the spring of 1953 and especially since Churchill's speech of May 11, 1953, paralyzed all efforts to create the European Defense Community and a political unity. This was due to uncertainty as to the outcome of the German elections. However, since the overwhelming majority of the 49 million people of the Federal Republic voted for the policies of Adenauer, this situation has been terminated
