This paper focuses to analyze the data rate, bit error rate (BER), flickering & bandwidth of visible light communication (VLC) system. The existing modulation scheme ON-OFF Keying (OOK) is modified and produces the trade-off between these parameters. The modified ON-OFF Keying (MOOK) is proposed in which the variation in the transmitted pulses is investigated. Therefore, the square and rectangular pulses are used to transmit zero and one bits respectively. The duty cycle of square pulse is increased to improve the flickering performance. Moreover, it utilized the bandwidth and deteriorates the BER performance. The differential MOOK (DMOOK) modulation scheme is also proposed in which the ON period of square pulse (zero bits) is removed. Therefore, the data rate of DMOOK is increased because the duration of zero bit pulse is decreased. Similarly, the high bandwidth is utilized and BER performance deteriorates. All performance parameters are evaluated on Arduino based hardware VLC system. We conclude that the BER performance deteriorates by improving flickering performance and data rate of the VLC system.

An integrated approach to underwater wireless communication and orientation estimation using visible light is presented and demonstrated using a simplified 1-DOF system. This system utilizes a long range, high bandwidth optical communication system as a reference with which to rectify error in the prediction of the orientation state. This is done through the use of a Discrete Kalman Filter. In this way, a dual-use system is developed. Using the same hardware, this system can simultaneously communicate using a modulated light source, and estimate, with accuracy, absolute orientation in space. This orientation knowledge is vital to maintaining a line-of-sight link for the communication system. In addition, orientation estimation is important for the various tasks that the underwater robot must perform.

For Visible Light Communication (VLC) systems, photo receiver is very important for obtaining low noisy modulated signal at receiver side since the pure modulated signal is easy demodulated. Therefore, we give a comparison of performance of three type photo receivers in this paper. In first application, we use a photoresistor to detect the modulated signal. It is referred as CDS (cadmium-sulfide) resistor. Another detector is solar cell unit. The other receiver is selected photodiode detector. It is shown from experimental results that the most appropriate modulated signal is obtained at output of photodiode. The output of solar cell consists of very complex signal compared with output of photoresistor. Additionally, we use PPM (Pulse Position Modulation) technique for transmission of data signal.

Internet of Things enables seamless interaction between connected devices. The growing popularity of IoT will increase the number of sensors and devices to be connected with Internet enormously, resulting in generation of Trillions of GBs of data. Most of the IoT devices have very less storage capacity and hence data generated are to be transmitted to IoT node head which takes care of processing. Data generated from ECG devices, Video surveillance systems are very large requiring a physical medium with high bandwidth for the connection between device and IoT node head. Further the objects plugged into Internet are most of the times powered by batteries requiring low power communication. Visible Light Communication (VLC) is one such technology that provides wide bandwidth up to 10Gbps with energy efficiency and thus it can be a potential solution for the above problem. In this paper we propose NS3 based IoT implementation using existing IoT protocol stack with Visible Light Communication as the physical medium considering error model. We achieve a throughput of 416 Mbps which is a significant improvement over Wireless Fidelity based IoT implementation which has a throughput of 91.2 Mbps under the same condition.
