Optical microscopic and goniometric measurements were combined with microradiography, diffraction-pattern analysis and topography to study a 2 mm thick [001]-texture CVD (chemical vapour deposition) diamond film that had developed a coarse-grained structure composed of separate columnar crystallites. Individual columns were capped by large (001) facets, with widths up to 0.5 mm, and which were smooth but not flat, whereas the column sides were morphologically irregular. The refractive deviation of X-rays transmitted through the crystallites was exploited for delineating facet edges, thereby facilitating the controlled positioning of small-cross-section X-ray beams used for recording diffraction patterns from selected volumes in two representative crystallites. Their structure consisted of a [001]-axial core column surrounded by columns in twin orientation with respect to the core. The diamond volume directly below the (001) facets was free from low-angle boundaries, and no dislocation outcrops on the facets were detected. Significant elastic deformation of this volume was only present close to the facet periphery, where misorientations reached a few milliradians. Lattice imperfection was high in the twins, with ∼1° misorientations.

Abstract Background and Purpose. People with spastic cerebral palsy often receive passive stretching that is intended to maintain or increase joint passive range of motion (PROM) even though the effectiveness of these exercises has not been definitively demonstrated. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of PROM exercises on 6 adults with spastic quadriplegia and contractures. Participants. Four men and 2 women (X̄=31 years of age, range=20–44 years) who lived in an institution for people with mental retardation participated in the study. Methods. The authors used 2 multiple baseline designs. Three participants (group 1) received lower-extremity PROM exercises during phase A; PROM exercises were discontinued during phase B. Three participants (group 2) did not receive PROM exercises during phase A; PROM exercises were initiated during phase B. Data were analyzed using visual analysis and the C statistic. Results. Results varied with the method of analysis; however, phase A and phase B measurements, overall, did not differ for either group. Discussion and Conclusion. This study demonstrated use of a single-subject design to measure the effect of PROM exercises on adults with cerebral palsy. The authors concluded that the PROM exercise protocol did not have an effect on the lower-extremity goniometric measurements of the participants.

Wulfenite from Ivigtut was mentioned by Gordon in 1939. Identification was based on goniometric measurements for which reason B0ggild in 1953 noted that the data might also fit those of stolzite. New finds of similar crystals were made in 1978 and again in 1979 in thomsenolite parageneses different from the one described by Gordon. X-ray and electron microprobe determinations proved the crystals to be wulfenite. The secondary parageneses in which wulfenite was found are described. A search among other thom­ senolite parageneses did not result in other finds of wulfenite. Wulfenite has a very limited distribution in the deposit. No definite source for lead and molybdenum could be indicated although minerals of these elements are frequently found in other parts of the deposit.
