A 65-day study was undertaken to test the effects of two doses (10 and 20 mg/kg) of dietary fumonisin Bs (FB) on the rabbit male reproduction system. Body and testicular weight was not affected by the intoxication, neither the fatty acid composition of the testicular total phospholipids; the testis histological analysis failed to reveal any toxic effect. The FBs increased the testicular concentration and activity of reduced glutathione and glutathione peroxidase and decreased initial phase lipid peroxidation (conjugated dienes and trienes) in a dose dependent manner. Sperm morphology and chromatin condensation were monitored on Feulgen-stained smears. No significant differences were observed between the treatment groups and between sampling time points. The live cell ratio in the sperm (as assessed with flow cytometry) was not different among groups at any of the five sampling timepoints and was also identical within groups. Similarly, the spermatozoa membrane lipid profile was also identical in all three groups after the total intoxication period. In summary, it was demonstrated that FBs in an unrealistic and unjustified high dose still do not exert any drastic harmful effect on the leporine, male reproduction system, meanwhile slightly augmenting testicular antioxidant response.

This study explored the use patterns and benefits of directional microphone technology in real world situations experienced by patients who had been fitted with switchable omnidirectional/directional hearing aids. Telephone interviews and paper-and-pencil questionnaires were used to assess perceived performance with each microphone type in a variety of listening situations. Patients who used their hearing aids regularly and switched between the two microphone configurations reported using the directional mode, on average, about one-quarter of the time. From brief descriptions, patients could identify listening situations in which each microphone mode should provide superior performance. Further, they reported encountering listening situations in which an omnidirectional microphone should provide better performance more frequently than listening situations in which the directional microphones should be superior. Despite using the omnidirectional mode more often and encountering situations in which an omnidirectional microphone should provide superior performance more frequently, participants reported the same level of satisfaction with each microphone type.

Abstract A miniature silicon condenser microphone diaphragm has been designed that exhibits good predicted directionality, sensitivity, and reliability. The design was based on the structure of a fly’s ear (Ormia ochracea) that has highly directional hearing through mechanical coupling of the eardrums. The diaphragm that is 1mm × 2mm × 20 microns is intended to be fabricated out of polysilicon through microelectromechanical micromachining. It was designed through the finite-element method in ANSYS in order to build the necessary mode shapes and frequencies into the mechanical behavior of the design. Through postprocessing of the ANSYS data, the diaphragm’s response to an arbitrary sound source, sensitivity, robustness, and Articulation Index - Directivity Index (AI-DI) were predicted. The design should yield a sensitivity as high as 100 mV/Pa, an AI-DI of 4.764 with Directivity Index as high as 6 between 1.5 and 5 kHz. The diaphragm structure was predicted be able to withstand a sound pressure level of 151.74 dB. The sound level that would result in collapse of the capacitive sensor is 129.9 dB.. The equivalent sound level due to the self-noise of the microphone is predicted to be 30.8 dBA.

In the present work, we employed bioinformatics search tools to select ovulation-associated cDNA clones with a preference for those representing putative novel genes. Detailed characterization of one of these transcripts, 6C3, by real-time PCR and RACE analyses led to identification of a novel ovulation-associated gene, designatedNcoa7B. This gene was found to exhibit a significant homology to theNcoa7gene that encodes a conserved tissue-specific nuclear receptor coactivator. UnlikeNcoa7,Ncoa7Bpossesses a unique and highly conserved exon at the 5′ end and encodes a protein with a unique N-terminal sequence. Extensive bioinformatics analysis has revealed thatNcoa7Bhas one identifiable domain, TLDc, which has recently been suggested to be involved in protection from oxidative DNA damage. An alignment of TLDc domain containing proteins was performed, and the closest relative identified wasOXR1, which also has a corresponding, highly related short isoform, with just a TLDc domain. Moreover,Ncoa7Bexpression, as seen to date, seems to be restricted to mammals, while other TLDc family members have no such restriction. Multiple tissue analysis revealed that unlikeNcoa7, which was abundant in a variety of tissues with the highest expression in the brain,Ncoa7BmRNA expression is restricted to the reproductive system organs, particularly the uterus and the ovary. The ovarian expression ofNcoa7Bwas stimulated by human chorionic gonadotropin. Additionally, using real-time PCR, we demonstrated the involvement of multiple signaling pathways forNcoa7Bexpression on preovulatory follicles.
