The purpose of the paper is to apply two methods to groundwater pollution in porous media. The methods are the weighted finite difference method and the boundary element method, which were proposed or developed by Kanoh et al. (1986,1988) for advective diffusion problems. Numerical modeling of groundwater pollution is also investigated in this paper. By subdividing the domain into subdomains, the nonlinearity is localized to a small region. Computational time for groundwater pollution problems can be saved by the boundary element method; accurate numerical results can be obtained by the weighted finite difference method. The computational solutions to the problem of seawater intrusion into coastal aquifers are compared with experimental results.

AbstractThe scattered fields of plane waves in a solid from a cylinder or sphere are critical in determining its acoustic characteristics as well as in engineering applications. This paper investigates the scattered field distributions of different incident waves created by elastic cylinders embedded in an elastic isotropic medium. Scattered waves, including longitudinal and transverse waves both inside and outside the cylinder, are described with specific modalities under an incident plane wave. A model with a scatterer embedded in a structural steel matrix and filled with aluminum is developed for comparison with the theoretical solution. The frequency of the plane wave ranged from 235 kHz to 2348 kHz, which corresponds to scaling factors from 0.5 to 5. Scattered field distributions in matrix materials blocked by an elastic cylindrical solid have been obtained by simulation or calculated using existing parameters. The simulation results are in good agreement with the theoretical solution, which supports the correctness of the simulation analysis. Furthermore, ultrasonic phased arrays are used to study scattered fields by changing the characteristics of the incident wave. On this foundation, a partial preliminary study of the scattered field distribution of double cylinders in a solid has been carried out, and the scattered field distribution at a given distance has been found to exhibit particular behaviors at different moments. Further studies on directivities and scattered fields are expected to improve the quantification of scattered images in isotropic solid materials by the phased array technique.

AbstractKudzu is an invasive perennial climbing vine characterized by fast growth rates and tolerance to control measures. Repeated applications with high rates of 2,4-D plus picloram provide effective kudzu control, but picloram use is not permitted in certain states due to groundwater pollution concerns. Studies were conducted in Alabama and Florida to compare kudzu control with aminocyclopyrachlor, a new herbicide, to control provided by aminopyralid, clopyralid, metsulfuron methyl, and picloram plus 2,4-D, which are common treatments for kudzu management. Two annual applications of the same herbicide treatment were evaluated for effects on kudzu cover, kudzu volume index, and cover of other vegetation. Aminocyclopyrachlor at 140 to 280 g ae ha−1 (2 to 4 oz ae ac−1) was as effective as the standard 4.48 kg ae ha−1 (4 lb ae ac−1) 2,4-D amine plus 1.2 kg ae ha−1 picloram for kudzu control. There were no differences in kudzu control among the three rates of aminocyclopyrachlor tested. Colonization by graminoids, forbs, and Rubus spp. at 2 yr was greatest for herbicides providing the best kudzu control: aminocyclopyrachlor, and 2,4-D plus picloram. Herbicide treatments were more effective in controlling kudzu at the Alabama location, but repeated annual applications for 2 yr did not completely eliminate kudzu with any treatment at either site.
