Introduced is a model-based diagnostic system for motors, that also employs concepts of information theory as a health metric. From an existing bond graph of a squirrel cage induction motor, state equations were extracted and simulations performed. Simulated were various cases, including the response of an ideal motor, which functions perfectly to designer’s specifications, and motors with shorted stator coils, a bad phase capacitor, and broken rotor bars. By constructing an analogy between the motor and a communication channel, Shannon’s theorems of information theory were applied to assess functional health. The principal health metric is the channel capacity, which is based on integrals of signal-to-noise ratios. The channel capacity monotonically reduces with degradation of the system, and appears to be an effective discriminator of motor health and sickness. The method was tested via simulations of a three-phase motor; and for experimental verification, a two-phase induction motor was modeled and tested. The method was able to predict impending functional failure, significantly in advance.

In the absence of a three-phase power source, single-phase operation of three-phase induction motor used single-phase power source had a certain practical significance. In this paper, utilized symmetrical component method analysed the asymmetric circuit system of motor, will be voltage and current of the three-phase stator windings decomposed into positive, negative and zero sequence three groups symmetrical components. The theory is analyzed and the formula is deduced of capacitor phase shift method, solved the problem of starting torque, proposed to add starting capacitors and deduced the optimal value of starting capacitor. Finally, the single-phase operation of three-phase induction motor is simulated and verified by simulation software.

Variable frequency drives are used to provide reliable dynamic systems and significant reduction in usage of energy and costs of the induction motors. Modeling and control of faulty or an unbalanced three-phase induction motor is obviously different from healthy three-phase induction motor. Using conventional vector control techniques such as Field-Oriented Control (FOC) for faulty three-phase induction motor, results in a significant torque and speed oscillation. This research presented a novel method for vector control of three-phase induction motor under fault condition (two-phase open circuit fault). The proposed method for vector control of faulty machine is based on rotor FOC method. A comparison between conventional and modified controller shows that the modified controller has been significantly reduced the torque and speed oscillations.

The Euler-Lagrange (EL) model of the three-phase induction motor is set up based on the mathematical model of the three-phase induction motor in the two-phase static coordinate. The passivity and dissipativity of the three-phase induction motor are studied by EL model. Based on the passivity of induction motor, the passivity-based controller of system is designed with the method of damping injection under the conditions of the stator flux oriented. The system simulation model of the three-phase induction motor is established under MATLAB/Simulink environment. The Simulation results show that the passivity-based controller designed with the method of damping injection under the conditions of the stator flux orientedis feasible.
