This paper proposes a multi-functional Photovoltaic (PV) inverter based on the Unified Power Quality Conditioner (UPQC) configuration. Power quality improvement is a difficult issue to solve for isolated areas or islands connected to the mainland through long submarine cables. In the proposed system, the line voltage is compensated for by the series inverter while the shunt inverter delivers the PV generating power to the grid. Depending on the technical conditions of power quality and system environment, it has five different operating modes. Especially during poor power quality conditions, the sensitive load is separated from the normal load to provide a different power quality level by using the microgrid conception. In this paper, the control method and the power flow for each mode are described, and the operational performance is verified through a PSiM simulation so that it can be applied to the power quality improvement of weak grid power systems such as in isolated areas or on islands connected to the mainland by long submarine cables.

Power quality has an important role in the distribution of electrical energy. The use of non-linear load can generate harmonic spread which can reduce the power quality in the radial distribution system. This research is in form of coordinated planning by combining distributed generation placement, capacitor placement and network reconfiguration to simultaneously minimize active power losses, total harmonic distortion (THD), and voltage deviation as an objective function using the particle swarm optimization method. This optimization technique will be tested on two types of networks in the form 33-bus and 69-bus IEEE Standard Test System to show effectiveness of the proposed method. The use of MATLAB programming shows the result of simulation of increasing power quality achieved for all scenario of proposed method.

Nowadays, power quality is one of the major problems in electric power distribution system. The poor power quality at distribution level can affect the operation and performance of sensitive and critical loads. In the distribution systems, poor power quality results in various problems such as higher power losses, harmonics, sag and swells in the voltage, and poor power factor., etc. Unified Power Quality Conditioner (UPQC) is the only versatile device which can mitigate several power quality problems related with distribution system. A UPQC that combines the operations of a Distribution Static Compensator (D-STATCOM) and Dynamic Voltage Restorer (DVR) together with the shunt and series active control devices. UPQC can solve the problems related to the voltage/current harmonics, voltage sag/swell and unbalance in distribution system. To evaluate the performance improvement in the system, a model of UPQC is developed in MATLAB/SIMULINK with a typical distribution network. In this research, UPQC is applied for power quality enhancement of Myaungtagar industrial distribution substation, Myanmar. Enhancements in power quality by UPQC are evaluated under maximum load condition. Keywords—Power Quality, UPQC, Series Controller, Shunt controller, Harmonics
