In this paper unified power quality conditioner has been used to enhance low voltage ride through capability of grid connected wind conversion system taking Doubly fed induction generator (DFIG). Unified Power quality conditioner (UPQC) device is a combination of series active filter and shunt active filter. This custom power device is mainly used to mitigate power quality issues which is an essential factor today because of wide application of power electronics devices. UPQC is capable to deal with voltage and current imperfection simultaneously. It is installed in the system mainly to improve the power quality i.e. Voltage sag/swell, Harmonics, reactive power compensation etc. at point of common coupling. System is modeled in MATLAB/SIMULINK and results shows utilization of UPQC for the enhancement of LVRT of a DFIG wind system according to Grid code. when fault occurs in the system, it will create voltage dip and series compensator of UPQC injects during this time to prevent disconnection from grid and stay connected to contribute during fault. UPQC is also used for fast restoration of system steady state, power factor improvement, prevent rotor over current.

This paper proposes a multi-functional Photovoltaic (PV) inverter based on the Unified Power Quality Conditioner (UPQC) configuration. Power quality improvement is a difficult issue to solve for isolated areas or islands connected to the mainland through long submarine cables. In the proposed system, the line voltage is compensated for by the series inverter while the shunt inverter delivers the PV generating power to the grid. Depending on the technical conditions of power quality and system environment, it has five different operating modes. Especially during poor power quality conditions, the sensitive load is separated from the normal load to provide a different power quality level by using the microgrid conception. In this paper, the control method and the power flow for each mode are described, and the operational performance is verified through a PSiM simulation so that it can be applied to the power quality improvement of weak grid power systems such as in isolated areas or on islands connected to the mainland by long submarine cables.

Nowadays, power quality is one of the major problems in electric power distribution system. The poor power quality at distribution level can affect the operation and performance of sensitive and critical loads. In the distribution systems, poor power quality results in various problems such as higher power losses, harmonics, sag and swells in the voltage, and poor power factor., etc. Unified Power Quality Conditioner (UPQC) is the only versatile device which can mitigate several power quality problems related with distribution system. A UPQC that combines the operations of a Distribution Static Compensator (D-STATCOM) and Dynamic Voltage Restorer (DVR) together with the shunt and series active control devices. UPQC can solve the problems related to the voltage/current harmonics, voltage sag/swell and unbalance in distribution system. To evaluate the performance improvement in the system, a model of UPQC is developed in MATLAB/SIMULINK with a typical distribution network. In this research, UPQC is applied for power quality enhancement of Myaungtagar industrial distribution substation, Myanmar. Enhancements in power quality by UPQC are evaluated under maximum load condition. Keywords—Power Quality, UPQC, Series Controller, Shunt controller, Harmonics

Nonlinear loads and grid side disturbances in the power distribution network cause harmonic rich currents and voltage perturbations such as voltage harmonics, voltage sags and voltage swells. The unified power quality conditioner (UPQC) with shunt inverter and series inverter are usually employed for elimination of current and voltage related power quality issues. However, elimination of voltage and current quality issues in a grid connected Photovoltaic (PV) system is essential. Therefore, PV integrated UPQC topology is proposed in this paper with a novel controller for power quality improvement. The control algorithm based on notch filter Phase Locked Loop (PLL) is utilized for proper phase detection and elimination of voltage and current disturbances. PV tied UPQC controller based on notch filter PLL has the capability to avoid multiple zero crossing during highly distorted grid voltage condition. Conventional control algorithms such as synchronous reference frame theory, unit vector controller based on traditional PLL are also analyzed for the control of PV tied UPQC. The proposed system is developed in Matlab/Simulink and the results obtained are evaluated to measure the performance. A real-time hardware prototype is developed using dSPACE processor. The obtained experimental results validate the efficiency of the proposed controller for PV tied UPQC.
