This thesis addresses the Unified Power Quality Conditioner (UPQC) which is a major custom power solutions capable for load balancing, power factor-correction, voltage regulation, voltage and current harmonics mitigation in a three-phase three-wire distribution system for different combinations of linear, non-linear and dynamic loads. The unit template technique (UTT) is used to get the reference signals for series active power filter and shunt active power filter which utilizes two closed loop PI controllers. The design of three- phase three-wire UPQC includes the design of shunt controller (SHUC) and series controller (SERC).

The increased usage of power-sensitive electronic devices has prompted interest in power conditioning solutions, which is no surprise. As a result, some type of compensation must be supplied if power output remains below the standards' prescribed limitations. The UPQC (Unified Power Quality Controller) is one of numerous AC Transmission System families that can control voltage, impedance, and phase angle among other factors (FACTS). This study focuses on modern UPFC systems that have increased power quality efficiency to help utilities reduce voltage concerns. One of the FACTS controls for lowering stress sales effects is a unified power quality conditioner (UPQC). The quadrature voltage is specified using the UPQC series compensator. As a result, the compensator series never utilizes active power in a continuous scenario. As mentioned in the approach, a low power rating compensator injects voltage to remedy the system's power quality problem. The voltage is decreased and the power factor is raised when the fluid logic controller is used in conjunction with traditional UPQC. Furthermore, the load factor has been improved. The circuit is then imitated in MATLAB / SIMULINK using a fluctuating logo controller.

The usage of electric vehicles (EV) increased in recent years as the vehicles design and performances are nearly similar to petrol vehicles. The main source of energy for EV is taken from the grid for charging. So, the penetration of EVs in alternating current (AC) grid creates more power quality issues like voltage sag, swell and harmonics in the current. This energy can also be produced from the renewable energy resources like photovoltaic (PV) power generation. This PV energy can also be used as direct current (DC) grid. The electric vehicle chargers which come with intelligent grid operation is considered as load in this paper. This paper is an attempt to discuss the penetration of EVs in AC/DC hybrid micro grid which causes the power quality problems, and the power quality problem is mitigated by using the unified power quality conditioner (UPQC). The results are analyzed for three cases and four scenarios which is based on the function of UPQC and the action of smart charger in grid connected as well as autonomous mode operation of the AC/DC micro grid when the load is considered as dynamic load. The simulation is carried out in MATLAB2017b environment

In a power transmitting network, a Unified Power Quality Conditioner is used to operate both shunt— connected and series-connected compensation simultaneously. Destabilize, disturbance, and sometimes even dc elements can all be found in a power distribution network. As a result, a UPQC (Unified Power Quality Conditioner) outperforms a Unified Power Flow Conditioner (UPFC) in many of these areas to offer shunt-connected or series-connected compensation. The main objective of this paper is to provide the overview, different designs given by many researchers to improve the performance of the UPQC.

The electrical power sector is currently focusing on power quality (PQ) issues and their mitigation. Industrial automation and the use of power electronic converters for the integration of distributed generation create various PQ problems. This necessitates PQ enhancement, which in turn helps to improve the life span of the equipment as well as the reliability of supply for feeding critical loads within the system. This paper presents a comprehensive review of the Unified Power Quality Conditioner (UPQC) and its widespread application in the distribution system. The UPQC belongs to the family of active power filters. It contributes to the alleviation of voltage and current-related PQ issues along with power factor correction and the integration of renewable energy systems in the distribution network. This paper discusses various topologies, compensation methods, control theories, and the technological developments in recent years. More than 160 research papers have summarized the features of UPQC for further applications. Based on the outcomes of the investigation, the future direction of the UPQC is discussed. This paper is expected to play a major role in guiding research scholars in the application of the UPQC.
