The coefficient of variation of forest stand volume can remain approximately constant over successive measurements. This consideration was exploited to provide an efficient estimator of the mean timber volume on the current occasion when sampling with partial replacement (SPR) on two occasions. For even-aged and normally distributed forest populations, the gains in precision were shown to be in the range of 8 to 200% when using the modified SPR estimator of the current mean volume.
