Shadows limit many remote sensing applications such as classification, target detection, and change detection. Most current shadow detection methods utilize the histogram threshold of spectral characteristics to distinguish the shadows and nonshadows directly, called “hard binary shadow.” Obviously, the performance of threshold-based methods heavily rely on the selected threshold. Simultaneously, these threshold-based methods do not take any spatial information into account. To overcome these shortcomings, a soft shadow description method is developed by introducing the concept of opacity into shadow detection, and MRF-based shadow detection method is proposed in order to make use of neighborhood information. Experiments on remote sensing images have shown that the proposed method can obtain more accurate detection results.

Due to the block of high-rise objects and the influence of the sun’s altitude and azimuth, shadows are inevitably formed in remote sensing images particularly in urban areas, which causes missing information in the shadow region. In this paper, we propose a new method for shadow detection and compensation through objected-based strategy. For shadow detection, the shadow was highlighted by an improved shadow index (ISI) combined color space with an NIR band, then ISI was reconstructed by the objects acquired from the mean-shift algorithm to weaken noise interference and improve integrity. Finally, threshold segmentation was applied to obtain the shadow mask. For shadow compensation, the objects from segmentation were treated as a minimum processing unit. The adjacent objects are likely to have the same ambient light intensity, based on which we put forward a shadow compensation method which always compensates shadow objects with their adjacent non-shadow objects. Furthermore, we presented a dynamic penumbra compensation method (DPCM) to define the penumbra scope and accurately remove the penumbra. Finally, the proposed methods were compared with the stated-of-art shadow indexes, shadow compensation method and penumbra compensation methods. The experiments show that the proposed method can accurately detect shadow from urban high-resolution remote sensing images with a complex background and can effectively compensate the information in the shadow region.

Ship detection in panchromatic optical remote sensing images is faced with two major challenges, locating candidate regions from complex backgrounds quickly and describing ships effectively to reduce false alarms. Here, a practical method was proposed to solve these issues. Firstly, we constructed a novel visual saliency detection method based on a hyper-complex Fourier transform of a quaternion to locate regions of interest (ROIs), which can improve the accuracy of the subsequent discrimination process for panchromatic images, compared with the phase spectrum quaternary Fourier transform (PQFT) method. In addition, the Gaussian filtering of different scales was performed on the transformed result to synthesize the best saliency map. An adaptive method based on GrabCut was then used for binary segmentation to extract candidate positions. With respect to the discrimination stage, a rotation-invariant modified local binary pattern (LBP) description was achieved by combining shape, texture, and moment invariant features to describe the ship targets more powerfully. Finally, the false alarms were eliminated through SVM training. The experimental results on panchromatic optical remote sensing images demonstrated that the presented saliency model under various indicators is superior, and the proposed ship detection method is accurate and fast with high robustness, based on detailed comparisons to existing efforts.

Given the influences of illumination, imaging angle, and geometric distortion, among others, false matching points still occur in all image registration algorithms. Therefore, false matching points detection is an important step in remote sensing image registration. Random Sample Consensus (RANSAC) is typically used to detect false matching points. However, RANSAC method cannot detect all false matching points in some remote sensing images. Therefore, a robust false matching points detection method based on Knearest- neighbour (K-NN) graph (KGD) is proposed in this method to obtain robust and high accuracy result. The KGD method starts with the construction of the K-NN graph in one image. K-NN graph can be first generated for each matching points and its K nearest matching points. Local transformation model for each matching point is then obtained by using its K nearest matching points. The error of each matching point is computed by using its transformation model. Last, L matching points with largest error are identified false matching points and removed. This process is iterative until all errors are smaller than the given threshold. In addition, KGD method can be used in combination with other methods, such as RANSAC. Several remote sensing images with different resolutions and terrains are used in the experiment. We evaluate the performance of KGD method, RANSAC + KGD method, RANSAC, and Graph Transformation Matching (GTM). The experimental results demonstrate the superior performance of the KGD and RANSAC + KGD methods.
