Purpose The purpose of this paper is to analyze real-world flight data of a piston engine training aircraft collected from an internet-based radar service, along with wind data provided by a weather forecast model, and to use such data to design a hybrid electric power system. Design/methodology/approach The modeling strategy starts from the power demand imposed by a real-world wind-corrected flight profile, where speed and altitude are provided as functions of time, and goes through the calculation of the efficiency of the powertrain components when they meet such demand. Each component of the power system and, in particular, the engine and the propeller, is simulated as a black box with an efficiency depending on the actual working conditions. In the case of hybrid electric power system, the battery charging and discharging processes are simulated with the Shepherd model. Findings The variability of power demand and fuel consumption for a training aircraft is analyzed by applying the proposed methodology to the Piper PA-28-180 Cherokee, a very popular aircraft used for flight training, air taxi and personal use. The potentiality of hybridization is assessed by analyzing the usage of the engine over more than 90 flights. A tentative sizing of a hybrid electric power system is also proposed. It guarantees a fuel saving of about 5%. Originality/value The scientific contribution and the novelty of the investigation are related to the modeling methodology, which takes into account real-world flight conditions, and the application of hybridization to a training aircraft.

In today’s world electric power demand is increase steadily. In order to meet this increasing demand superconducting cable can be use instead of conventional AC cable in the power system. The Superconducting cable has some different characteristic than conventional AC cable. If this cable is installed in the power system, then there are some effects introduced on the fault current level. These effects on the fault current level can further have an impact on the power system protection. So there is a need to analyze the impact of a superconducting cable on power system protection and determine its impedance under a fault condition. This paper presents the impacts of the fault current level on a superconducting cable under fault condition in power system. Different types of fault are present in this paper like LG fault, LL fault, LLG fault, LLL fault.


The power demand is increasing globally at a higher rate than the possible increase in the generation. The increased demand requierements put additional burdon on the existing transmission lines and sometimes burdoned beyond their power carrying capacities. Increase in power demand either due modernization of power system, industrialization leads to congestion problem and abruptly affects the stable and reliable operation of power system. Redesign and reconstruction of power system according to load requirements everytime is not an economical and viable solution. Other possible solution to the problem is use of FACTS devices. The use of FACTS devices the problems like increase in load demand, high losses in transmission line and dip in receiving end voltage can be eliminated or easily tackeled. In this paper, Static Synchronous Series Compensator as one of FACTS device has been used for improvement of voltage profile of different buses and power carrying capacity of the transmission lines. The main objective of this paper is to make a comparative investigation between compensated and uncompensated power system in terms of enhancement of power carrying capacity with low losses and improvement of voltage profiles of buses in the transmission network. The performance of uncompensated power system has been compared with compensated power system with the use of MATLAB/ Simulink software.

It is critical for today's power system to remain in a state of equilibrium under normal conditions and severe disturbances. Power imbalance between the load and the generation can severely affect system stability. Therefore, it is necessary that these imbalance conditions be addressed in the minimum time possible. It is well known that power system frequency is directly proportional to the speed of rotation of synchronous machines and is also a function of the active power demand. As a consequence, when active power demand is greater than the generation, synchronous generators tends to slow down and the frequency decreases to even below threshold if not quickly addressed. One of the most common methods of restoring frequency is the use of under frequency load shedding (UFLS) techniques. In this chapter, load shedding techniques are presented in general but with special focus on UFLS.
