Abstract. Modern seismic ground-motion sensors have reached an excellent performance quality in terms of dynamic range and bandwidth resolution. The weakest point in the recording of seismic events remains spatial sampling and spatial resolution, due to the limited number of installed sensors. A significant improvement in spatial resolution can be achieved by the use of non-conventional motion sensors, such as low-cost distributed sensors arrays or positioning systems, capable of increasing the density of classical seismic recording networks. In this perspective, we adopted micro-electro mechanical system (MEMS) sensors to integrate the use of standard accelerometers for moderate-to-strong seismic events. In addition, we analyse high-rate distributed positioning system data that also record soil motion. In this paper, we present data from the 2016 Central Italy earthquakes as recorded by a spatially dense prototype MEMS array installed in the proximity of the epicentral area, and we compare the results to the signal of local 1s GPS stations. We discuss advantages and limitations of this joint approach, reaching the conclusion that such low-cost sensors and the use of high rate GPS signal could be an effective choice for integrate the spatial density of stations providing strong-motion parameters.

<p>With the number of bridges increases, the bridge health monitoring (BHM) technique is developing from single bridge monitoring to collaborative supervision of bridge group. Therefore, there are many technical problems need to be solved especially the performance evaluation index for bridge group network. This paper analyses the performance evaluation index of the bridges and bridge group network, establishes the performance evaluation index for bridge group based on rating factor (RF) and technical condition evaluation index. Based on bridge field testing and monitoring data, bridge technical condition evaluation index and performance evaluation method for bridge group are proposed. A case study demonstrates that the research results provide support for bridge group networking monitoring and collaborative supervision.</p>

This paper delineates the conceptual algorithms of a driving simulator which is intended for vehicle performance evaluation and to act as a virtual platform for research studies and therefore eliminates the cost and dangerous of field testing. A virtual proving ground for vehicle testing has been devised through which virtual handling, traction and ride tests can be performed. A fully instrumented simulator cabin combining the driver and the vehicle simulation package is developed. Different vehicle configurations are simulated during typical sever manoeuvres which reflects the robustness and fidelity of the devised simulator.

Mercury is a toxic and noxious element and is the only metal that naturally occurs as gas. One of the most challenging topics (included in the United Nations Minimata convention) is to understand the adsorption–release processes of manmade materials (e.g., concrete, bricks, tiles, painting). Adsorption of Hg by construction and demolition waste materials has recently been studied, but investigations on how much Hg0 can be released from these products are rather poor. The abandoned mining site of Abbadia San Salvatore (Siena, central Italy) where, for about one century, cinnabar was roasted to produce liquid mercury, is known for the high concentrations of (i) Hg0 in edifices and structures and (ii) total and leachate Hg in synthetic materials. In the present paper, a new, simple and low-cost method to measure the amount of GEM (Gaseous Elemental Mercury) released from anthropic materials (concrete, wall rocks, and tiles) located in the Hg0-rich environments of the former mining site, is proposed. The efficiency of a specific paint that was supposed to act as blocking agent to Hg0 was also tested.
