When solving constraint satisfaction problems (CSPs), it is a common practice to rely on heuristics to decide which variable should be instantiated at each stage of the search. But, this ordering influences the search cost. Even so, and to the best of our knowledge, no earlier work has dealt with how first variable orderings affect the overall cost. In this paper, we explore the cost of finding high-quality orderings of variables within constraint satisfaction problems. We also study differences among the orderings produced by some commonly used heuristics and the way bad first decisions affect the search cost. One of the most important findings of this work confirms the paramount importance of first decisions. Another one is the evidence that many of the existing variable ordering heuristics fail to appropriately select the first variable to instantiate. Another one is the evidence that many of the existing variable ordering heuristics fail to appropriately select the first variable to instantiate. We propose a simple method to improve early decisions of heuristics. By using it, performance of heuristics increases.

AbstractLeckrone and Adelman have established an IUE observing strategy that has yielded co-added spectra with enhanced S/N ratios for several A and B stars. New observations by Roby and Adelman using the same technique have added two new Hg-Mn stars into this sample. We have begun a long-term study of elemental abundances in this uniform, high-quality set of IUE spectra for 13 stars. We report on the first stages of this project: abundances for N, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, and Ni. The study of the Fe- peak elements show that our data set can provide accurate abundances and that abundances obtained from UV and optical spectra often are in good agreement. This study provides the groundwork for self-consistent abundance analyses of more exotic elements in our long term project.

AbstractThe tropical red clay soils, formed by the Quaternary weathering of volcanic deposits (and other rock types) in tropical and subtropical environments, have a very open structure and consequent high voids ratio. These soils are particularly sensitive to disturbance during sampling and subsequent transportation and extrusion of the samples. This technical note describes a simple method for obtaining high quality, undisturbed samples from pits in a way that does not require extrusion or trimming of the sample in the laboratory prior to triaxial testing, and only minimal preparation prior to oedometer testing.

Nowadays, machine engraving of photos into solid materials such as marble or granite is becoming very popular. Relatively cheap CNC machines are available. The problem is that high quality photos are essential to obtain good results. The first part of the paper describes a model of a CNC machine used for engraving and puts down the principles of image processing applied to poor quality photos in order to get the best results, as well as the fundamental image processing methods necessary for achieving satisfactory results when using an electromagnetic diamond percussion tool for engraving. The second part of the paper describes a very simple method of data coding and the algorithm of engraving tool movement for image engraving process by means of a control system based on ATmega16 microcontroller. The quality of the engraved images is comparable, or even better, than that of manually engraved images or images engraved by other competitive CNC machines.
