The optimization problems on real-world usually have non-linear characteristics. Solving non-linear problems is time-consuming, thus heuristic approaches usually are being used to speed up the solution’s searching. Among of the heuristic-based algorithms, Genetic Algorithm (GA) and Simulated Annealing (SA) are two among most popular. The GA is powerful to get a nearly optimal solution on the broad searching area while SA is useful to looking for a solution in the narrow searching area. This study is comparing performance between GA, SA, and three types of Hybrid GA-SA to solve some non-linear optimization cases. The study shows that Hybrid GA-SA can enhance GA and SA to provide a better result

The multiple travelling salesman problem (MTSP), an extension of the well-known travelling salesman problem (TSP), is studied here. In MTSP, starting from a depot, multiple salesmen require to visit all cities so that each city is required to be visited only once by one salesman only. It is NP-hard and is more complex than the usual TSP. So, exact optimal solutions can be obtained for smaller sized problem instances only. For large-sized problem instances, it is essential to apply heuristic algorithms, and amongst them, genetic algorithm is identified to be successfully deal with such complex optimization problems. So, we propose a hybrid genetic algorithm (HGA) that uses sequential constructive crossover, a local search approach along with an immigration technique to find high-quality solution to the MTSP. Then our proposed HGA is compared against some state-of-the-art algorithms by solving some TSPLIB symmetric instances of several sizes with various number of salesmen. Our experimental investigation demonstrates that the HGA is one of the best algorithms.

Engineering field has inherently many combinatorial optimization problems which are hard to solve in some definite interval of time especially when input size is big. Although traditional algorithms yield most optimal answers, they need large amount of time to solve the problems. A new branch of algorithms known as evolutionary algorithms solve these problems in less time. Such algorithms have landed themselves for solving combinatorial optimization problems independently, but alone they have not proved efficient. However, these algorithms can be joined with each other and new hybrid algorithms can be designed and further analyzed. In this paper, hierarchical clustering technique is merged with IAMB-GA with Catfish-PSO algorithm, which is a hybrid genetic algorithm. Clustering is done for reducing problem into sub problems and effectively solving it. Results taken with different cluster sizes and compared with hybrid algorithm clearly show that hierarchical clustering with hybrid GA is more effective in obtaining optimal answers than hybrid GA alone.

Resource Description Framework (RDF) inherently supports data mergers from various resources into a single federated graph that can become very large even for an application of modest size. This results in severe performance degradation in the execution of RDF queries. As every RDF query essentially traverses a graph to find the output of the Query, an efficient path traversal reduces the execution time of RDF queries. Hence, query path optimization is required to reduce the execution time as well as the cost of a query. Query path optimization is an NP-hard problem that cannot be solved in polynomial time. Genetic algorithms have proven to be very useful in optimization problems. We propose a hybrid genetic algorithm for query path optimization. The proposed algorithm selects an initial population using iterative improvement thus reducing the initial solution space for the genetic algorithm. The proposed algorithm makes significant improvements in the overall performance. We show that the overall number of joins for complex queries is reduced considerably, resulting in reduced cost.

During the past decade, academic and industrial communities are highly interested in evolutionary techniques for solving optimization problems. Genetic Algorithm (GA) has proved its robustness in solving all most all types of optimization problems. To improve the performance of GA, several modifications have already been done within GA. Recently GA has been hybridized with many other nature-inspired algorithms. As such Bacterial Foraging Optimization (BFO) is popular bio inspired algorithm based on the foraging behavior of E. coli bacteria. Many researchers took active interest in hybridizing GA with BFO. Motivated by such popular hybridization of GA, an attempt has been made in this chapter to hybridize GA with BFO in a novel fashion. The Chemo-taxis step of BFO plays a major role in BFO. So an attempt has been made to hybridize Chemo-tactic step with GA cycle and the algorithm is named as Chemo-inspired Genetic Algorithm (CGA). It has been applied on benchmark functions and real life application problem to prove its efficacy.

A new approach to the generation of an initial point is proposed for discrete combined shape, which improves fully the local searching capability of discrete combined shape algorithm. Combined shape algorithm is embedded into genetic algorithm as a combined shape operator. Consequently a hybrid genetic algorithm for structural optimization with discrete variables is proposed. The constrained optimization problems were dealt with by adaptive annealing penalty factors and penalty function. The numerical results show that improved combined shape genetic algorithm for structural optimization with discrete variable problems has a faster convergence speed, which has advantages of local searching capability and globally searching capability of genetic algorithm. Improved combined shape genetic algorithm is an efficient optimal design method for engineering structure.
