By applying a geometrical scheme developed to tackle the eigenvalue problem of delay differential equations with multiple time delays, Hopf bifurcation of Hopfield neuron model is analyzed in two-parameter space. By the introduction of two new angles, the calculation of imaginary roots is carried out analytically and effectively. By increasing the parameter to cross over the Hopf bifurcation lines, the stability switching direction is confirmed. The method is a useful tool to show the partition of stable and unstable regions in two-parameter space and detect double Hopf bifurcation further. The typified dynamical behaviors based on nearby double Hopf points are analyzed by applying the normal form technique and center manifold method.

We study the system ẋ = x(y+2z+(15/2η2)u), ẏ = y(x-2z-(7/2η2)u), ż = -z(x+y+(4/η2)u), u = x+y+z-1, and its two-parameter perturbations. We show that before perturbation there exists a one-parameter family of periodic solutions obtained via a nondegenarate Hopf bifurcation and after perturbation there remains at most one limit cycle of small amplitude and bounded period. Moreover, we found that a secondary Hopf bifurcation to an invariant torus occurs after the perturbation.

AbstractWe construct an example of a C∞ diffeomorphism of an annulus into itself which has an attracting invariant circle such that the map restricted to this circle has no periodic points and no dense orbits. By studying two parameter families of maps of the plane which undergo Hopf bifurcation, particularly the set of parameter values for which the rotation number is irrational, we see that the above example can be considered as a ‘worst case’ of the loss of smoothness of an attracting invariant circle without periodic orbits.

AbstractIn this paper, we consider the well-known Vallis model for El Niño driven by an external excitation. The bifurcation studies on the driven Vallis model are conducted with different control parameters. Then we discuss about the taming of the Hopf bifurcation by varying the driving function. We could note that the system changes its state from stable steady state to oscillatory state and vice versa which is achieved by changing the driving function. Finally, two parameter bifurcation plots are derived to show that impact of the driving function on the system bifurcation points.

The combined effects of harvesting and time delay on predator-prey systems with Beddington–DeAngelis functional response are studied. The region of stability in model with harvesting of the predator, local stability of equilibria and the existence of Hopf bifurcation are obtained by analyzing the associated characteristic equation due to the two-parameter geometric criteria developed by Ma, Feng and Lu [Discrete Contin. Dyn. Syst. Ser B9 (2008) 397–413]. The global stability of the positive equilibrium is investigated by the comparison theorem. Furthermore, local stability of steady states and the existence of Hopf bifurcation for prey harvesting are also considered. Numerical simulations are given to illustrate our theoretical findings.

An analysis is undertaken of the formation and stability of localised patterns in a 1D Schanckenberg model, with source terms in both the activator and inhibitor fields. The aim is to illustrate the connection between semi-strong asymptotic analysis and the theory of localised pattern formation within a pinning region created by a subcritical Turing bifurcation. A two-parameter bifurcation diagram of homogeneous, periodic and localised patterns is obtained numerically. A natural asymptotic scaling for semi-strong interaction theory is found where an activator source term \[a = O(\varepsilon )\] and the inhibitor source \[b = O({\varepsilon ^2})\] , with ε2 being the diffusion ratio. The theory predicts a fold of spike solutions leading to onset of localised patterns upon increase of b from zero. Non-local eigenvalue arguments show that both branches emanating from the fold are unstable, with the higher intensity branch becoming stable through a Hopf bifurcation as b increases beyond the \[O(\varepsilon )\] regime. All analytical results are found to agree with numerics. In particular, the asymptotic expression for the fold is found to be accurate beyond its region of validity, and its extension into the pinning region is found to form the low b boundary of the so-called homoclinic snaking region. Further numerical results point to both sub and supercritical Hopf bifurcation and novel spikeinsertion dynamics.
