AbstractThe human visual system can discriminate between animate beings vs. inanimate objects on the basis of some kinematic cues, such as starting from rest and speed changes by self-propulsion. The ontogenetic origin of such capability is still under debate. Here we investigate for the first time whether newborns manifest an attentional bias toward objects that abruptly change their speed along a trajectory as contrasted with objects that move at a constant speed. To this end, we systematically manipulated the motion speed of two objects. An object that moves with a constant speed was contrasted with an object that suddenly increases (Experiment 1) or with one that suddenly decreases its speed (Experiment 2). When presented with a single speed change, newborns did not show any visual preference. However, newborns preferred an object that abruptly increases and then decreases its speed (Experiment 3), but they did not show any visual preference for the reverse sequence pattern (Experiment 4). Overall, results are discussed in line with the hypothesis of the existence of attentional biases in newborns that trigger their attention towards some visual cues of motion that characterized animate perception in adults.

ABSTRACTThe growth and microstructural evolution of Al/Ni and Ni/AI bilayer thin films have been investigated as a function of Al and Ni layer thickness and thermal treatment by transmission electron microscopy. Studies were also made of Al and Ni single layers of varying thickness. All films were grown by dc magnetron sputtering using carbon coated Cu TEM grids as substrates. For the bilayers, the Al thickness was fixed at either 3.5 or 7.0 nm while the Ni thickness was varied systematically from 3.2 to 12.8 nm. Deposition sequence significantly influenced bilayer microstructure even in as-deposited samples. Al/Ni bilayers generally exhibited a finer microstructure than Ni/AI. In the 3.5 nm Al/Ni bilayers no conclusive electron diffraction evidence was found for elemental Al while for the reverse sequence both Al and NiAl3 diffraction rings were found. In the 7.0 nm Al/Ni bilayers diffraction rings due to Al were observed. The reverse sequence again produced both Al and NiAl3 diffraction rings. Interestingly, diffraction rings due to the Ni layers were found for all samples but were consistently measured at positions corresponding to a 2.5–3.5% increase in interplanar spacing. Annealing at 385°C produced evidence for generalized grain growth and strong accentuation of the electron diffraction rings due to the NiAl3 phase. Again, deposition significantly influenced annealed bilayer microstructure. For the Al/Ni sequence annealing produced polycrystalline N1AI3 island-like structures, while for Ni/AI bilayers, annealing promoted the growth of small NiAl3 crystals uniformly distributed in the film.

This paper presents a three-dimensional (3D) extension of our previous work on the synthesis of assemblies whose dimensional integrity is insensitive to the dimensional variations of individual parts. Assuming that assemblies can be built in the reverse sequence of decomposition, the method recursively decomposes a given product geometry into two subassemblies until parts become manufacturable. At each recursion, joints are assigned to the interfaces between two subassemblies to ensure the two criteria for robust dimensional integrity, in-process dimensional adjustability, and proper part constraints. Screw theory is utilized as a unified 3D representation of the two criteria. A case study on an automotive space frame is presented to demonstrate the method.
