Rusitec (Czerkawski and Breckenndge, 1977) lias been widely used to study factors which affect rumen fermentation such as monensin, monensin-propionate, abierixin, calcimycin and Aspergillus oryzae (Bogaert et al., 1990; Newbold et al., 1993). Monensin is a grain-positive ionophore which modifies rumen fermentation. The objective of the current study was to determine the effect of monensin on molar proportions of volatile fatty acid (VFA) produced from diets which varied in foragexoncentrate ratio.Four Rusitec vessels (800 ml) were used in an extended Latin Square design with 2 blocks, 2 treatments and 3 periods, each lasting 14 days. To initiate each period, inocula was recovered from the same lactating Holstein-Friesian cow (∽650 kg). All vessels received 15 g DM/day of a complete diet which contained maize silage, grass silage, NaOH treated wheat grain and a protein supplement in three foragexoncentrate ratios; 25:75 (L), 50:50 (M) and 75:25 (H).

C-phycocyanin (C-PC) is a biocompound extracted from Arthrospira maxima. It is a chromophore-protein complex, with antioxidant properties. Its ability to prevent oxidative stress allows for diverse medical applications. This study evaluates the use of C-PC as a protein supplement and an antioxidant for in-vitro sperm preservation in a short-term extender. Viability, progressive motility, DNA damage and percentage of reactive oxygen species where assessed in Swine (Sus scrofa domesticus) sperm stored for up to 72 hours at 4 °C. Treatments with C-PC had the following concentrations: 0, 34.5, 69, 138 and 207 μg mL−1. Progressive motility and percentage of sperm with undamaged DNA were unchanged (20%) after storage for 48 hours using the 138 μg mL C-PC concentration−1.

In vitro experiments have shown that fermentation of carbohydrates prevents accumulation of nitrogen in the colon. Variable results have been obtained on modulation of dietary intakes in vivo. Lactose[15N,15N]-labeled ureide has been proposed as a tool to study colonic nitrogen metabolism. However, on oral administration of the marker, different urinary excretion patterns of the 15N label have been found. In this study, 50 mg lactose[15N,15N]ureide was directly instilled in the colon through an orocecal tube to investigate the colonic handling of this molecule in a direct way. In basal conditions, 42% (range, 37–48%) of labeled nitrogen administered as lactose[15N,15N]ureide was retrieved in urine after 72 h. A substantial variability in total urinary excretion of the label was found, but the urinary excretion pattern of the label was similar in all volunteers. When inulin, a fermentable carbohydrate, was administered together with the labeled marker, a significant decrease in urinary excretion of 15N after 72 h was found, to 29% (range, 23–34%). The effect of a smaller dose of inulin (250 mg) on colonic handling of lactose[15N,15N]ureide (50 mg), was investigated in another group of volunteers, and this time, fecal excretion of the marker was also evaluated. The results seem to indicate that fermentation of inulin causes an increased fecal excretion of the marker, thereby reducing urinary excretion but not retention in the human nitrogen pool. This instillation study shows that lactose[15N,15N]ureide is a tool with good properties to investigate the effect of different types of carbohydrates on nitrogen metabolism in the proximal colon in vivo.
