AbstractThis paper describes a fully functional short-term flood prediction system. Its effect has been tested on watershed of Lubieńka river in Małopolska. To use this system it must have a data set also described in this paper. A modification of the system to adopt for predicting flash floods was described. Full operation of the system is shown on example of real flood on Lubieńka river in June 2011.

Landslides and flash floods result in many fatalities around the globe. Understanding what triggers these events is therefore vital, although how to approach this problem is not straight forward. After background information for the experiment and some guidelines, two options are presented to learn more about the triggers of debris flows: (A) using rainfall or (B) the atmospheric conditions. You can then choose the option that appears more useful and interesting to you (you can always go back and read the other experiment afterwards). The article then ends with a reflection on the results.

Problems in the construction of design storms are expressed in mathematical terms. Introduced here is a concept for approximating natural peak flow values by means of the distribution of typical rainfall patterns. A comparison demonstrates the quality of this concept and the competency of some well-known design storms for the adequate evaluation of peak flows.
