The Special Article by Dr Gaull (Pediatrics 1989;83:433-442) was a comprehensive review of the current thoughts about functions of taurine; Dr Gaull concluded: "Experimental findings in animal models and in human cell models provide further justification for taurine supplementation of infant formulas."
Our concern is that this is not necessarily an unbiased conclusion, even though it may be a correct one. Your readers may not be aware that Dr Gaull is the personal owner of US patent 4 303 692 which covers the addition of taurine to human infant formula and stands to gain financially only if taurine supplementation of baby formula is scientifically and legally upheld.
