The goal of this paper is to discuss the key issues in the computer-aided surface modeling tools used in the industrial aesthetic design workflow and to highlight the problems that still make styling activities difficult. Based on the experience gained while working on two different European projects, with the collaboration of industrial designers of different fields, a general industrial design workflow is illustrated, pointing out the main differences between the automotive and non-automotive sectors. Among the emerged critical issues, particular emphasis is given to the high request of tools more suitable for the mentality of creative users; short research surveys aimed to meet this request are included, and finally authors indicate a branch of research in which they are investigating and they consider particularly worth exploring further.

NURBS surface modeling technique is an important part of computer aided industrial design(CAID), and surface modeling has much advantage. This thesis bases on the statistics and comparison of current CAID practical application methods and techniques, concludes the common CAID techniques, the thinking methods and application process of surface categorization in surface modeling from the basic theory of NURBS surface modeling; and together with concrete cases, this thesis also proposes an solution for the common hard problems in the process of using NURBS technique to build 3D product models.

Abstract In this article, we argue that learning across fields depends on the social construction of (in)commensurability rather than on the ‘distance’ between bodies of knowledge. Building on Fleck’s (1935) original concept of thought collectives, we examine how two professions, engineers and industrial designers, often fail yet sometimes succeed to make their knowledge commensurable and co-create innovation. Empirically, we draw on qualitative fieldwork in Baden-Württemberg to identify three types of relations between industrial design and technical innovation: separation (design without designers), sequential collaboration (shallow and aesthetic design), and co-creation (pervasive design). We extend the concept of inter-collective learning geographically and explore how place and various scales of space affect local thought styles, the retention of thought solidarity and the emergence of new temporary thought collectives.

This workshop report summarises the potentially far-reaching deliberations and results of a conference of experts in doctoral education from around the world. The conference was organised jointly by the U.S. Center for Innovation and Research in Graduate Education (CIRGE) at the University of Washington, Seattle and the German International Centre for Higher Education Research (INCHER) at the University of Kassel. Participants discussed critical issues in the globalisation of doctoral education, including global inequalities, diversity in types of students and modes of study, and intellectual risk-taking, and they sought to develop proposals for policy. The focus of the conference was on the research doctorate. This essay reports on the activities, discussions, and conclusions of the workshop. One of the task forces illustrated issues in the intellectual risk-taking faced by graduates by performing a highly realistic vignette written by a South African professor. We begin our workshop report with this vignette as a way to begin to frame the key issues.

Computer-aided design of the high-affinity inhibitors of aromatase based on 1,2,4-triazole derivatives was performed by molecular modeling tools. The potential biological activity of the designed compounds was evaluated by molecular docking and quantum chemistry calculations. As a result, six hits that form a coordinate bond with an iron atom of an enzyme hem and effectively interact with its substrate-binding site were identified. The intermolecular interactions appearing in the structural complexes of these ligands with aromatase were analyzed and the enthalpies of their formation were calculated. Based on the data obtained, the identified compounds were suggested to present good scaffolds for the development of novel effective drugs against breast cancer.

The purpose of this paper is to develop further insights into micro-entrepreneurship programs participated in by Chinese industrial designers. A model of creative thinking is employed to explain the campaign creation process. A case study research in sample design entrepreneurs was designed and conducted, and it was composed of three steps: preparing for data collection, collecting the evidences, and analyzing the evidences. It was found that five main defects in creative thinking work as obstacles to crowdfunding success. In order to overcome these drawbacks, it is suggested that designers involved in micro-entrepreneurship programs should acquire the abilities of building prototypes, following the design procedure, finding and solving problems, defining ideation and applying the evaluation methods. Current findings and future study can contribute to the curriculum development for China's industrial design education.

Ammonia borane H3N−BH3 (AB) was re-discovered, in the 2000s, to play an important role in the developing hydrogen economy, but it has seemingly failed; at best it has lagged behind. The present review aims at analyzing, in the context of more than 300 articles, the reasons why AB gives a sense that it has failed as an anodic fuel, a liquid-state hydrogen carrier and a solid hydrogen carrier. The key issues AB faces and the key challenges ahead it has to address (i.e., those hindering its technological deployment) have been identified and itemized. The reality is that preventable errors have been made. First, some critical issues have been underestimated and thereby understudied, whereas others have been disproportionally considered. Second, the potential of AB has been overestimated, and there has been an undoubted lack of realistic and practical vision of it. Third, the competition in the field is severe, with more promising and cheaper hydrides in front of AB. Fourth, AB has been confined to lab benches, and consequently its technological readiness level has remained low. This is discussed in detail herein.
