Dynamic Modeling of a Monopropellant-Based Chemofluidic Actuation System

This paper presents a dynamic model of a monopropellant-based chemofluidic power supply and actuation system. The proposed power supply and actuation system, as presented in prior works, is motivated by the current lack of a viable system that can provide adequate energetic autonomy to human-scale power-comparable untethered robotic systems. As such, the dynamic modeling presented herein is from an energetic standpoint by considering the power and energy exchanged and stored in the basic constituents of the system. Two design configurations of the actuation system are presented and both are modeled. A first-principle based lumped-parameter model characterizing reaction dynamics, hydraulic flow dynamics, pneumatic flow dynamics, and compressible gas dynamics is developed for purposes of control design. Experimental results are presented that validate the model.

A great amount of research is being conducted to incorporate smart material actuators in aerospace applications such as (1) turbo fan engines (2) servo flap actuators for helicopter rotor control. For example, a piezoelectric stack actuator, coupled with mechanical or hydraulic amplification could provide the actuation required for the variable pitch fan system with a potentially higher level of reliability. In addition, piezoelectric actuation system could do so at a lower overall weight. However, there are limitations with existing piezoelectric stack actuators relative to power requirements. Therefore, a new approach has been investigated to improve these characteristics in order for piezoelectric stacks to be a feasible solution for these types of large scale applications. A new configuration involving dielectric, conductor, piezoelectric material in a particular sequence of stack actuation is examined and experimented. A nonlinear lumped parameter model of a piezoelectric stack has been developed to describe the behavior for the purpose of control actuation analysis.

Abstract In order to understand mechanism of the impact between head and disk of a HDD subject to a shock and to improve the shock resistance effectively, it is essential to develop a dynamic model which can represent well the head slap. Although motion of the head and disk subject to a shock requires modeling by a continuous system to be rigorous, in this study, a simplified lumped parameter model is developed to understand basic dynamics of the head slap and to determine crucial parameters for the improvement of the structural design. In addition, drop test results of the HDD are presented to back to up the derived model.

Therefore, a new approach has been investigated to improve these characteristics in order for piezoelectric stacks to be a feasible solution for these types of large scale applications. A new configuration involving dielectric, conductor, piezoelectric material in a particular sequence of stack actuation is examined and experimented. This configuration is recommended due to the advantage that the metallic layers will allow creating the equipotential surfaces of the quartz and dielectric layers. This circumstance is very important because, in this case, it will take place instantly changing the electric potential of the surface of the piezoelectric material and the dielectric when the force or voltage applied to the actuator changes instantly. A nonlinear lumped parameter model of a piezoelectric stack has been developed to describe the behavior for the purpose of control actuation analysis.

The rare-earth (RE) permanent magnets (PM) have been increasingly adopted in traction motor application. However, the RE PM is expensive, less abundant, and has cost uncertainties due to limited market suppliers. This paper presents a new design of a RE-free five-phase ferrite permanent magnet-assisted synchronous reluctance motor (Fe-PMaSynRM) with the external rotor architecture with a high saliency ratio. In such architecture, the low magnetic coercivity and demagnetization risk of the ferrite PM is the challenge. This limits the number of flux barriers, saliency ratio, and reluctance torque. A precise analytical design procedure of rotor and stator configuration is presented with differential evolution numerical optimizations by utilizing a lumped parameter model. A 3.7 kW prototype is fabricated to validate the proposed idea.
