Abstract In this paper, we study, analyze, and validate some important zero-dimensional physics-based models for vanadium redox batch cell (VRBC) systems and formulate an adequate physics-based model that can predict the battery performance accurately. In the model formulation process, a systems approach to multiple parameters estimation has been conducted using VRBC systems at low C-rates (∼C/30). In this batch cell system, the effect of ions' crossover through the membrane is dominant, and therefore, the capacity loss phenomena can be explicitly observed. Paradoxically, this means that using the batch system might be a better approach for identifying a more suitable model describing the effect of ions transport. Next, we propose an efficient systems approach, which enables to help understand the battery performance quickly by estimating all parameters of the battery system. Finally, open source codes, executable files, and experimental data are provided to enable people's access to robust and accurate models and optimizers. In battery simulations, different models and optimizers describing the same systems produce different values of the estimated parameters. Providing an open access platform can accelerate the process to arrive at robust models and optimizers by continuous modification from the users' side.

To study somatostatin/dopamine (SS/D) synergy in a human cell system constitutively expressing SS and D receptors (SSR and DR, respectively), we characterized the expression of SSR and DR subtypes in the non-small-cell lung cancer line Calu-6, and then we evaluated the effect on cell proliferation of SS/D chimeric molecules (BIM-23A387 and BIM-23A370), which bind with high affinity both sst2 and D2R, and compared the results with those obtained by using SS-14 and subtype-selective SS analogs (SSA) and D agonists (DA). Because Calu-6 cells produce insulin-like growth factor (IGF) and IGF-binding protein (IGFBP) peptides, which play a role in the autocrine/paracrine control of cell growth, we also investigated the effects of chimeric compounds on secretion and expression of IGF system components. Relative high levels of sst2 and the long isoform of the D2R were detected by real-time RT-PCR and Western blot in Calu-6, together with sst5 and to a lesser extent sst3 and D4R. BIM-23A387 and BIM-23A370 significantly inhibited growth of Calu-6, whereas IGF-IGFBP secretion or expression was unaffected, suggesting a direct inhibitory effect. The inhibition of cell growth, measured by both [3H]thymidine incorporation and cell count, was significantly lower when individual SSA and DA control peptides or subtype-specific SSA and DA were tested. BIM-23A370 was more potent than BIM-23A387 ( P < 0.001). These findings show that SS/D chimeras can inhibit Calu-6 proliferation in an IGF-independent manner and suggest that this enhanced potency might be because of the induction of SSR/DR dimerization. The Calu-6 cell line, constitutively expressing SSR and DR, provides a suitable model to elucidate the mechanism of action of SSA and DA on regulation of cell growth and to characterize the interaction between SSR and DR.

Abstract Although field measurements and using long hydrological datasets provide a reliable method for parameters' calibration, changes in the underlying basin surface and lack of hydrometeorological data may affect parameter accuracy in streamflow simulation. The ensemble Kalman filter (EnKF) can be used as a real-time parameter correction method to solve this problem. In this study, five representative Xin'anjiang model parameters are selected to study the effects of the initial parameter ensemble distribution and the specific function form of the parameter on EnKF parameter estimation process for both single and multiple parameters. Results indicate: (1) the method of parameter calibration to determine the initial distribution mean can improve the assimilation efficiency; (2) there is mutual interference among the parameters during multiple parameters' estimation which invalidates some conclusions of single-parameter estimation. We applied and evaluated the EnKF method in Jinjiang River Basin, China. Compared to traditional approaches, our method showed a better performance in both basins with long hydrometeorological dataset (an increase of Kling–Gupta efficiency (KGE) from 0.810 to 0.887 and a decrease of bias from −1.08% to −0.74%); and in basins with a lack of hydrometeorological data (an increase of KGE from 0.536 to 0.849 and a decrease of bias from −15.55% to −11.42%).

For the multiple parameters estimation of BOC signal at the low SNR and multipath environment, the method which applies the characteristics of cyclic spectrum is developed. Firstly, the cyclic spectrum function of multipath BOC signal is derived. Then the cyclostationary property of BOC signal is analyzed. Finally, a novel parameter estimation algorithm of BOC signal, which makes use of the position of cyclic spectral peaks to estimate the carrier frequency, the subcarrier rate and PN code rate, is present. In the experiment the time-domain smoothing method is used to calculate the cyclic spectrum of BOC signal when the frequency is equal to zero in order to avoid the multidimensional search. At the same time using the method of the cumulative average can increase the SNR margin of the algorithm. Simulation results show that the multiple parameters of multipath BOC signal can be estimated effectively and the estimation performance is associated with the multipath environment.
