Conceptual Design of Tool Storage Based on the Divergent Tree Method

The divergent tree method was adopted in this paper, and an illustrative example of tool storage design in the machining center was given to describe the divergent thinking in the conceptual design process of mechanical products. Firstly general divergent tree method was applied to get various schemes of storage, then the primary schemes were achieved by using the measure of known characteristics, finally the excellent degree appraisal approach was applied to find out the optimum one. In addition, an intelligent computer aided conceptual design system of tool storage based on the divergent tree method and excellent degree appraisal approach was demonstrated in this paper.

This article presents architecture of integrated intelligent computer-aided design system for designing mechanical power-transmitting mechanisms (IICADkmps). The system has been developed in C# program environment with the aim of automatising the design process. This article presents a modern, automated approach to design. Developed kmps modules for calculation of geometrical and design characteristics of mechanical power-transmitting mechanisms are described. Three-dimensional geometrical parameter modelling of mechanical power-transmitting mechanisms was performed in the computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacturing/computer-aided engineering system CATIA V5. The connection between kmps calculation modules and CATIA V5 modelling system was established through initial three-dimensional models – templates. The outputs from the developed IICADkmps system generated final three-dimensional virtual models of mechanical power-transmitting mechanisms. Testing of the developed IICADkmps system was performed on friction, belt, cogged (spur and bevel gears) and chain transmitting mechanisms. Also, connection of the developed IICADkmps system with a device for rapid prototyping and computer numerical control machines was made for the purpose of additional testing and verification of practical use. Physical prototypes of designed characteristic elements of mechanical power-transmitting mechanisms were manufactured. The selected test three-dimensional virtual prototypes, obtained as an output from the developed IICADkmps system, were manufactured on the device for rapid prototyping (three-dimensional colour printer Spectrum Z510) and computer numerical control machines. Finally, at the end of the article, conclusions and suggested possible directions of further research, based on theoretical and practical research results, are presented.

An effort is made to give a description of a computer-aided conceptual design system. A novel Function-Action-Behavior-Mechanism (FABM) modeling framework is proposed to realize mapping from the overall function to principle solution according to customer’s requirements. Expansion and modification rules in the demand behavior are developed to extend the innovation of principle solution. A case study on pan mechanism design for cooking robot is presented to show the procedure of how to implement the intelligent reasoning based on the FABM model.

Mechanical products design process always focuses on the description of product structure information, while lacking of the expression and application of function and knowledge information. This paper proposes an intelligent design approach of mechanical products based on Function-Knowledge-Structure (FKS). The gene coding of function, knowledge and structure are constructed, and the correlation matrix of the Functional-Structure (FS) and Knowledge-Structure (KS) are introduced to calculate the fitness function. A case study of the conceptual design on bag forming, filling and sealing machine shows the intelligent design process based on FKS.

Control moment gyroscope or two-axis balking gyroscope is used in spacecraft orientation systems. The control moment gyroscope is a complex electromechanical system with different parameters which connect by means of specific instant and inverse dependences. This fact could complicate the design process as of getting the optimal parameters the search of construction variations becomes harder. To simplify the control moment gyroscope designing process and increase its efficiency the computer-aided design system could be as highly useful. The computer-aided design system which is used in the present research and described in the article consists of five main subsystems. They cover the main stages of control moment gyroscope designing.

Double-helical gears are usually manufactured using special type of machine tools, such as gear hobbing and shaping machines. In this paper, a manufacturing method of double-helical gears using a CNC machining center instead of the special type of machine tools is proposed. This manufacturing method has the following advantages: (i) the tooth surfaces can be modified arbitrarily, (ii) all we have to do in gear machining is only one machine setting, (iii) the hole and blank diameter and so on except the tooth surface can be also machined, and (iv) the auxiliary apparatus, special type of tools, and special type of machine tools are not needed. For this study, first the tooth profiles of the double-helical gear were modelled using a 3D computer-aided design system and the gear was machined using a CNC machining center based on a computer-aided manufacturing system. Next, the profile deviations, helix deviations, pitch deviations, and surface roughnesses of the manufactured double-helical gears were measured. Afterwards, the relationship between the tool wear and life time of the end mill were made clear. Finally, this manufacturing method was applied to the gears for a double-helical gear pump. As a result, the validity and effectiveness of the manufacturing method of double-helical gears using a CNC machining center were confirmed.

Competition generated the requirement of quick decisions at engineering activities. As a consequence, application of advanced computer modeling in engineering design needs application of intelligent computer methods to assist human decision making. A powerful CAD/CAM system with a comprehensive range of sophisticated modeling tools for describing engineering objects and programming tools for creating modeling procedures constitutes an appropriate environment to accept intelligent methods. The only way of survival for companies producing mechanical products on the competitive edge seems application of advanced modeling together with intelligent decision making. Much modeling, problem solving, database handling, visualization and other methods are involved in a typical computer-based engineering process. This process recently relies upon an integrated set of modeling tools and an integrated product database. Involving intelligent computer methods is a great challenge in this field. This paper surveys advanced modeling from the point of view of application of intelligent methods. It is organized as follows. A characterization of state of the art in advanced engineering modeling reveals important issues to be discussed in this paper. Following this, worldwide network-based group work of engineers is discussed. Human computer interaction (HCI) and network communication methods as important aspects of computer-aided engineering are outlined. Then recent development results in modeling of mechanical systems with special emphasis on integrated modeling of mechanical products, especially well-engineered shapes, are introduced. Finally, virtual manufacturing as an area of involving intelligent methods in CAD/CAM technology is discussed.
