Based on expert system theory and fluid–structure interaction (FSI), this paper suggests an intelligent design optimization system to derive the optimal shape of both the fluid and solid domain of flow channels. A parametric modeling scheme of flow channels is developed by design for additive manufacturing (DfAM). By changing design parameters, a series of flow channel models can be obtained. According to the design characteristics, the system can intelligently allocate suitable computational models to compute the flow field of a specific model. The pressure-based normal stress is abstracted from the results and transmitted to the solid region by the fluid–structure (FS) interface to analyze the strength of the structure. The design space is obtained by investigating the simulation results with the metamodeling method, which is further applied for pursuing design objectives under constraints. Finally, the improved design is derived by gradient-based optimization. This system can improve the accuracy of the FSI simulation and the efficiency of the optimization process. The design optimization of a flow channel in a simplified hydraulic manifold is applied as the case study to validate the feasibility of the proposed system.

Road vertical alignment design is a multi-objective design problem that needs to consider multiple constraints. Intelligent design based on optimization algorithms cannot wholly solve problems, such as multi-objective, uncertainty, and constraint dynamics. The article proposes a model of dynamically transforming design constraints into feasible regions as the design develops, to provide decision information before design actions rather than performing constraint evaluation after the design that reduces the empirical estimation. The design actions are divided into new design actions and modifying design actions, and corresponding feasible regions derived from constraints of design specifications and control elevations are established, respectively. Geometrical equations and program algorithms of feasible regions are described in the graphic environment, which is applied to the vertical alignment design to improve the design efficiency and decision-making level.

Abstract Traditional theological concepts, including revelation, shaped academic disciplines as they emerged in nineteenth-century Germany. The first university professor of geography, Carl Ritter, crafted an intriguing spatial history of revelation in his masterful Earth Science in Relation to Nature and the History of Man (1817–1859). The teleological bent of Ritter’s geography and his commitment to intelligent design have encouraged most commentators to regard Ritter as a late manifestation of physicotheology. However, this long-standing explanation of a crucial geographer’s religious platform misconstrues the field’s theological commitments. Physicotheology suffered irreversible losses in the German states in the late eighteenth century. Ritter’s adherence to primordial revelation and biblical literalism typify the religious awakening of the Napoleonic period more than enlightened rationalism. He is best understood as a geographer of religion, dedicated to evangelical missions and intrigued by how the Earth’s features shaped the spread and transformation of religious ideas and practices, including Buddhism.

In this paper, a knowledge service method that supports the intelligent design of products is investigated. The proposed method provides the solutions to computational problems and reasoning and decision-making problems in the field of intelligent design. The requirement analysis of a knowledge-based intelligent design system integrates design knowledge into case-based reasoning activities through scheme analysis, scheme evaluation, and scheme adjustment, thus achieving knowledge-based intelligent reasoning and decision-making. During the similarity matching, a new hybrid similarity measurement method is proposed to calculate the similarity of crisp and fuzzy sets. This method integrates the fuzzy set similarity theory based on the traditional similarity measurement method. A method of attribute level classification is proposed to assign weight coefficients. The attributes are divided into the primary matching and auxiliary matching levels according to the decisiveness of case matching, and the set of weight coefficients is continuously and dynamically updated through case-based reasoning learning. Then, the weighted global similarity measure is used to obtain the set of similar cases from the case database. Finally, a design example of a computer numerical control tool holder product is studied to present the practicability and effectiveness of the proposed method.

This introduction insists that history matters. What if current divisions in America rest, in part, on a fundamental divergence in the understanding of our history? The chapter proposes that the three most prominent Christian curricula have played a role through the historical narrative they promoted for K-12 education since the early 1970s. They became more widespread in different forms of alternative schooling from Christian schools to voucher programs, and homeschooling. Their narrative has been significant in defining Americans’ understanding of the world and its history and exposes the efficacy of the alliance among certain religious interests, conservative legislators, school boards, and various corporate interests in reshaping education in the United States. The campaign for a “Christian right history” is analogous to the successful advocacy for “intelligent design” in public school science curricula. Many conservative institutions support both the inclusion of politically conservative and Christian content into school curricula.
