Customized Profiles — The Beginning of an Era: A Short History of Blade Design

Author(s):
Hanns-Juergen Lichtfuss

The paper presents the evolutionary progress made in the design process of turbo machines from using standardized profiles — for turbine and compressor blades — towards individual profile designs. The emerging new power of numerical methods on continuously faster running electronic computers has made this progress possible. In addition there were regularly experimental verifications in cascade wind tunnels and turbo machinery test beds as well as applications of new design strategies. These strategies, i.e. naturally laminar flow in turbines and supercritical flow in compressors, also made use of reinvented inverse methods, as one tool to optimise problematic areas.

The article refers to the history of the judiciary in the town and the county (poviat) of Grodków which is presently located in Opolskie Voivodeship. In the first chapter, a short history of the establishment of the town, description of its owners, the process of creation of the administrative structure and some titbits of the town’s history are presented. In the consecutive parts, the history of the foundation and activity of several courts which operated in the town is presented. An analysis of the files concerning the town and court records preserved in the State Archives in Opole is also made. In the last but one chapter, a list of first people representing a new judiciary system in postwar Poland in the territory of the voivodeship and the poviat is presented. The article ends with a description of the last court operating in the town, that is the county court.

This is a short history of the Nepal Picture Library (NPL), Nepal’s first large-scale digital photo archive encompassing over 50,000 photographs collected in less than a decade. It is a rare institution; a catalogued visual resource open to the public with scores of intimate family collections, the historic and the mundane captured over decades by photojournalists, and portraits made in photo studios across the country. The essay provides insight into the strength, scope and potential of this community-created archive. Founded and managed by Photo Circle, a platform for photography in Kathmandu, NPL has published books, done several exhibitions in museums and public spaces across Nepal, and exhibited their collections internationally. Tracing the origins and the impact of NPL through a series of interviews, the essays reveals not only the transformative power of their methods of public engagement but also the deep concern for visual culture fostered in their volunteers particularly among photographers serving as amateur archivists. Keywords: archive, Kathmandu, Nepal, oral history, public history

Nowadays, the architects often design interesting atypical structures or the set of the structures. In these cases, it is important to consider also the wind effects and their correct values (wind load). Recommended values in Eurocode cannot be used in many times, because of difficult shapes of the structures, their large heights, or surrounding structures. Therefore, detailed analyses of wind effects either on designed structure or the pedestrians walking near the structure have to be done. The results can be used for better and more saving design, or more appropriate arrangement of planned structures. The analyses can be done by numerical methods (computing programs) or by experimental measurements in wind tunnels or by the combination of the both.
